The Miami Marlins were shut out for a third consecutive game on Tuesday and have now gone without a run for 27 consecutive innings. The Philadelphia Phillies picked up the 1-0 win thanks to a lead-off home run by Jimmy Rollins. The scoreless streak ties a franchise record for Miami. The loss also moved the Marlins to two and a half games behind the Phillies for fourth place in the division.
Josh Johnson was brilliant after the first batter but that was enough to give him his ninth loss of the year. The right-hander struck out seven over eight innings of impressive work in which Philadelphia managed only three hits. Mike Dunn and Steve Cishek combined to work a scoreless ninth and gave Miami a chance to tie it or win it in the bottom half.
Miami had five hits, all singles and was able to able to get three runners into scoring position in the game. All three of those runners were left on base as the streak of futility continued. Rob Brantly made his major league debut at catcher and went 0-3 with a strikeout. Brantly is expected to see around half of the remaining starts at catcher with John Buck receiving more time off.
The Marlins will look to score a run and win a game on Wednesday when they take on Roy Halladay. Scheduled to start for Miami is Mark Buehrle.
