Hanley Grabs Silver Slugger

Hanley Ramirez became the third Marlin to win a Silver Slugger Award when he was named the National League shortstop winner for 2008.    The Silver Slugger award is presented to the best player at each position as voted on by Managers and Coaches.   Previous Marlins’ winners were Miguel Cabrera and Gary Sheffield.

In 2008, Ramirez put together a remarkable season hitting .301 while knocking 33 home runs out of the park as part of a record breaking infield.   His average was down from a more impressive .332 in 2007 however his OBP improved to .400 putting the Marlins into more scoring opportunities while batting at the top of the lineup.   Ramirez had some big hits during the season in which he also swiped 35 bases.    Although defense is not factored into this award, Ramirez also improved with the glove improving his fielding percentage from 2007.

Heading into 2008, Ramirez is expected to drop down in the lineup from his standard leadoff spot to third in the lineup with Cameron Maybin replacing him at the top.  This should improve Ramirez’s run production increasing his chances at winning this award again in 2009.
