Owens Suspended for 50 Games
November 11, 2008 by Larry Walansky
Henry Owens who missed all of 2008 with a shoulder injury will miss the first 50 games of the 2009 season as well after being suspended by Major League Baseball on Tuesday for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
Owens has not pitched since June 2007 when he was the Marlins’ closer for a short amount of time. Marlins’ President of Baseball Operations, Larry Beinfest had this to say about the suspension of Owens: “We are disappointed that Henry Owens received a positive test, and fully endorse the discipline outlined in the MLB policy. We will continue to work with and educate our players to help prevent any further violations.”
After the suspension is complete, Owens will most likely need to continue rehab and also spend time in the minor leagues before being considered an option in the Major League bullpen again. It is doubtful he will see much if any time with the Fish in 2009 as of now.
