gizmo
Long term offers also made to Yelich and Hech (lol), with Ozuna possibly soon as well. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-heyman/24855727/marlins-make-long-term-offers-to-jose-fernandez-core-young-players

SongInTheAir
Would any other team in baseball try to "lock up" a player that no other team would want? Hech was literally THE WORST PLAYER IN BASEBALL in 2013 and only a little bit better in 2014. Can we lock him up to a radiator instead? Admin
13/325 and pray Hech accepts

And for that one year, there is no need for an extension. Give him one more year, see that he still makes the "great" plays but can't make the routine ones, see the emptiest batting average since Juan Pierre, and THEN give him 13/326. MarlinsLou
Good starting point but I assume it'll take more to lock in Jose Comps pretty close to Bumgarner, I would say $5-7 more guaranteed, and the Marlins can tac on a 7th year option at a lot of bucks ($15-18 million) with a small buyout, and it's a done deal. Would be largest SP contract ever player of his service time. Hard to argue against that one.

Jay Ram
Have they forgot about Alvarez? Meh. He's good, but long term deals for pitchers need to be kept at minimum.
Jay Ram
If anything comes from this, Yelich signing would be my first priority. Jose would be great too because if not Boras is going to get him 20 years, 1.8 Billion in 2019.

SilverBullet
If Hech and his agent have any inkling of how limited he truly is, I feel like they accept the first offer that comes across the table. I mean, I'm almost shocked he hasn't already accepted whatever it was. I think if they offered Hech $1 million, a slab of BBW ribs, and a trip to Disney World, he'd accept that immedietaly. I actually feel like if the Marlins lock up Hech... the 29 OTHER teams will each hold a major press conference to announce to their fans that they have virtually no chance of accidentally acquiring him. Terry Ryan: "This is a great day in Minnesota Twins history... the Miami Marlins have locked up Adeiny Hechavarria for the next six seasons, almost 100% assuring Twins fans that they will never have to see this young man in a Twins uniform... this is a day Twins fans and ownership alike have dreamed about for years. Congrats, let's celebrate!"
MarlinsLou
Meh. He's good, but long term deals for pitchers need to be kept at minimum. Yea but if they have Fernandez locked up for 6+, Alvarez 5, let's say they sign Shields for 5 (I mean they kind of have to with how low payroll is and committing to Stanton), have 5 years of Cosart control through arbitration, and 6 years of Heaney.... this is literally situation where they have a rotation, subject to injury, controlled for over half a decade. Combined with being able to stash Koehler and Hand in the bullpen for years, and DeScalfani, Nicolino, and Williams can all be stashed in AA/AAA for 3 full seasons and all project as at least #5 starters right now, this is an absolutely awesome controllable and affordable depth chart, and is ignoring Kolek/other guys who may emerge. I'm all for Alvarez for 5 years. He's going to get better. I think the strikeouts are coming, he throws way to hard to not have at least a 7 K/9 in his prime. We will just have to agree to disagree. I will tell you that for every defensive metric you give me I can give you a scout raving about his defense. He was also the runner up for a Gold Glove last season if I'm not mistaken. It's pretty obvious that his defense is well regarded in the profession and I'll take that over metrics all day long. But I do love your porn gifs !! LOL

I think defensive metrics have their place and, if anything, give us a little better idea of about how good a player is with the glove. Don't think they're entirely useless. However, they are definitely flawed. Too many factors go into it that aren't actually calculated as far as I know. Say Hech and Andrelton Simmons start in the same spot. Ball hit to the exact same spot away from them. Let's say to their right [in the hole]. Simmons gets to the ball, Hech doesn't. Well, you say Simmons is better for that play. But, if anyone knows, do they calculate speed of ball off bat for that play? The ball Simmons gets to goes off the bat at 80 mph, and the one Hech went for came at 95 mph. I mean ... *shrug* just throwing it out there. For the record, I am not saying Hech = Simmons, I feel Hech < Simmons, but, still.
