Piazza31
Fuck him "The Marlins do not think they’ll have to pay out the entire $325MM balance of Giancarlo Stanton‘s contract, Pirates president Frank Coonelly told a crowd (including the Tribune-Review’s Rob Biertempfel) at PirateFest Saturday. Speaking very candidly for a team president, Coonelly recalled a recent conversation with Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria and president David Samson: “They said to me, ‘You don’t understand. (Stanton) has an out clause after six years. Those first six years are only going to cost $107 million. After that, he’ll leave and play for somebody else. So, it’s not really $325 million.'” Here are more notes from around the big leagues." http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/12/quick-hits-stanton-mets-tulowitzki-miller-mariners.html

dim
Whether or not this actually happened (and it's very debatable that this ever took place), you should've known when the deal was announced that this is what the Marlins were going for. 6 years, $107 million and when Stanton turns 31 he can either opt in, take his full money and get traded to a rich team who'll pay him that crazy amount of money (7 years $200+ million is nuts), opt out and sign a new deal for what teams will feel he's worth at age 31 (probably close to that number but more likely something like 10 years $200 million+), or the third option... Loria did this deal knowing full damn well he will not be owner when the opt out clause comes into play. Loria's net worth as a whole is somewhere north of $500 million. If you factor in the team being worth something in the vicinity of $450 million-$500 million if he were to sell at this moment, then he'd be paying Stanton over the entire deal over 30% of his total net worth. 30% of everything he's got, including the team itself, to a single player. That's simply not smart business. For me this was always a 6 year $107 million deal. That's a hell of a team friendly deal given the season Stanton's coming off of and it's 4 years more than I ever expected to have Stanton for. I see Stanton opting in and whoever the ownership group/front office at the time of the opt out will find a Yankees/Cubs/Red Sox/Dodgers team to pawn Stanton's newfound nuts $30 million a year for 7 years contract onto. The good thing is we're getting all of Stanton's prime years for an average of $18 million a year. Whether this is a case of a thrifty front office, a cheap owner, or just basic economics, the truth of the matter is that the deal is genius for the Marlins. The one of the worst case scenarios for Miami is Stanton opting in whenever the time comes and no team is willing to touch his contract. But this is baseball and there's always gonna be rich owners willing to throw big money at a productive power bat. There'll be a market for Stanton when the time comes. Unless Stanton has an injury, stops hitting, pulls a Josh Hamilton, whatever between now and 2021. At that rate Stanton opts in and the Marlins are on the hook for that massive 7 year backloaded part of the contract on an unproductive player who hamstrings the teams payroll for many years to come. But right now that's the least of our concerns.

Piazza31
My question is, if spoken to a crowd- was it a crowd like a town hall meeting, or a crowd like private conversations being held and mingling that are supposed to be off the record and candid. Admin
I don't believe that happened but a lot of the Loria haters will run with it I'm sure
knglover
I believe that it probably was said after a few drinks and taken out of context. This statement reeks of jealousy based on who said it and the audience it was said to. If it was a financial powerhouse of a team (Yankees, Red Sox, etc.) that said it, I would give it more weight. I am guessing that strikes Alvarez off the list now.

You're gonna trade us Pedro Alvarez AND McCutchen for Derek Dietrich and a box of Ozzie Guillen jerseys AND pay their full salaries for me or I WILL let your wife know what you did with Ron Washington back at the 06 All Star Game! ...if you don't believe me... I've got a stick of dynamite right here with me and I won't hesitate to light it RIGHT NOW!!!"
Entendu
I felt like the Pirates GM took a shot at the Marlins on MLBN a few days ago, saying how proud he was that his owner wasn't making a profit and was reinvesting everything back into the team. I don't know what the deal is, but those Pirates guys are fucking dicks.
MiamiFan
I thought this was already understood. Why else would the contract be so back end loaded? I understand to build a team now but there is always an ulterior motive.
Eddie Altamonte
In 6 years what does it matter so many things can change The Marlins may have won a couple of World Championships more by then... Loria may have sold the team to Arison or the Jeter group long before anyway. The important thing is that Stanton is a Marlin and will be a Marlin for a long time That is something the Pirates cannot say about McCutchen who at first chance will leave Pittsburgh Let the 2018 bidding war for McCutchen begin now! fish14
I mean whether he should have said this to the media or not, he is completely right. This deal is a complete fraud if you think it is going to turn out to be the "richest contract in MLB history". Its unreal the lengths Loria and crew are going to save money this offseason. Stanton is making a lot less than he could, and we just got the Dodgers to pay not only Haren but also Gordon who is only due like 2 million. what kind of team does that? for the love of god they need to sell the team already. They are complete frauds. They are making such a profit operating this team in the new stadium and still we never reinvest that into the team. It is pathetic and I can't wait till they sell this team. this could be such a great franchise with a good fan base and new stadium if we had an owner who cared at all. This will never happen for a variety of reasons but I wish MLB would let Mark Cuban be an owner and he would take over. This current ownership is a joke who continuously lies. The_Punisher
I dont believe this report at all. No way a high profile official from any club gets engaged with the media in such depth. Its extremely unprofessional, and is considered a PR stunt. This report will follow up as false.

poptart
if Loria didn't say that, he could get Connelly for slander. I'm not sure if anyone's noticed, but after backloading Stanton's contract, Loria has added jack and shit to the payroll. the whole thing was to backload it so the Marlins would have available money to spend on FAs and whatever. where's all that money going? Loria's pockets right now.

If Stanton keeps being Stanton for the next 6 years there's a very good shot he opts out and will get paid even more than what's left on his contract w the fish
