Post game 4/6/2015 SALTY SUCKS!!!!!

Recommended Posts

The problem with Salty (and the reason he was signed) is that he had an excellent 2013 season. A quick glimpse at advanced stats would have told the Marlins that his numbers were thoroughly unsustainable, but we don't do that here. Can anyone even confirm that Marlins' talent evaluators have computers?

Not releasing Salty. First game and he'll get a month to not completely suck.

IF, under worst case scenario, he does this every game for the entire month, THEN we'd have to look towards J.T Realmuto in AAA. If Realmuto shows he can mash AAA ball for a month or a bit more, he can come up, platoon with Salty (given Salty is actually valuable when used properly as shown by his usual 770+ OPS against RHP) or just use him as a pinch hitter and split starts between him and Mathis against LHP (and maintain an emergency catcher).

99% of the time I am completely against having 3 catchers. But if you look at our bench, we have Don Kelly, who has played every position on the field, and Jeff Baker, who can play 1B/2B/3B. In this scenario Donovan Solano would likely become the odd man out, since Dee Gordon is now the everyday 2nd baseman and Baker is a better hitter and can hold his own at 2B AND 3B.

Obviously we have to watch things play out for a while. This was likely the worst game of Salty's life, even if the strikeouts will become a recurring theme. Hech looks like his old terrible hitting self too, so that bottom of the lineup will be a train wreck. Anyway, there are some scenarios the team can go through in a month or twos time, but this was just one game, and people calling for Salty's head are the quickest of over reactors. I'm not saying we shouldn't be worried about that spot given his defense is atrocious as well, but lets see some more AB's against RHP from him before we call for his Judgement Day.

A positive to note in a disappointing Opening Day is that the biggest strengths of our team should be the starting pitching and the bullpen. Just about the entire bullpen is a strength. We got a taste of that with Dunn having the best inning of his life and Ramos shutting things down. I feel Alvarez is definitely capable of performing like an ace (or at the very least a highly capable #2) until Jose is healthy, and Latos imo will be an All Star this year transitioning from Great American Ballpark to Marlins Park, injury issues be damned. Koehler/Haren/Cosart are all worrying question marks, but having guys like David Phelps and Brad Hand, who both have experience starting and have had some history of pitching well, as insurance policies for injuries or underperformance is something the team has never really had in the past.

The 1 through 6 in our lineup should be fine (depending on your view of Gordon, otherwise our 2 through 6 should be fine) once they find their rhythm. This team won't hit as poorly the entire season like it did today. Good to have baseball back and excited to see Latos pitch tomorrow.

Especially with the team being so strong, and even guys like Hech coming a long way defenseively, Salty is the weak link and an awful one.

There is no bright side with him.

When did that happen?

-9.0 UZR in 2013

-8.8 UZR in 2014

Just give him 44 more seasons, it'll be 0 by then.

I'm sorry but the stadium operations helped produce this loss by way having the damn roof open in the first place that caused dee Gordon to slip. I blame the behind the scenes people as much as I blame salty. I already sent a nasty email or Samson saying how they helped contribute to the loss not to mention the other fuck ups that happened in throughout the stands. I actually think the team player pretty well in spite of the fuck ups by how they ran the stadium ops. They better get their shit together for tomorrow's game. >-X

The Braves had to play on the same field as the Marlins did.

Everything about this game was terrible. Terribly managed and terribly played on the offensive side. I know you all have probably already mentioned what I'm about to say but I'm going to re-iterate.

1. The rain delay.

From where I was sitting in 322, I watched those rain clouds roll all the way in and settle over the park. I'm sure the grounds crew saw it too. Yet they didn't close the roof. Why? Instead, we get a rain delay at a freakin' dome and become a laughing stock on Opening Day. I'm sure ESPN will have a field day with this one. Dropped the ball massively and even took a hit away from the Marlins because Dee probably would have beaten out that bunt if he didn't slip on the wet dirt.

2. Stanton getting thrown out at third.

Why send him? Just why? Two outs and he's one of the slowest guys on the team. And you make the third out at third base. That's some high school level shit right there.

3. No bunt, no small ball

You get a guy on base with no outs and the bottom of the order up but instead of playing small ball with the bottom of the order and having Salty bunt the guy in to scoring position, you let him swing away. He strikes out and with the DP still in order, Hech grounds into it, inning over. All because you let one of the worst hitters on the team swing when he could have given himself up. Terrible management.

4. Salty

Just wow. One of the worst games I've seen from a Marlins catcher in a while. The one thing you absolutely cannot do with bases loaded, no outs he does. I mean even another strikeout wouldn't have been nearly as bad. Instead, he grounds into a god forsaken 5-2-3 double play and kills the entire inning. He also double clutched a ball behind the plate then still threw it trying to get a base stealer. Terrible decision and almost gave up another base. Horrible game, horrible player. If we are still in it at the ASB (and preferably before then), we need to sign another catcher.

Awful game but had a good day at the park. The game seems to move a hell of a lot faster with these new inclusions (the clock, the foot in the box rule for hitters). An enjoyable park experiemce but a terrible game in almost every aspect.

At least pitching showed up. Dunn even hit 100 on the gun with his first pitch of the day. Didn't think he had that kind of heat. Good to see. Good work by the pen and by Hendy. He deserved to win (and I still maintain that, without seeing a replay, the play at the plate could have easily been called an out). Good to see at least part of the team showed up.

I'll post some pics once my phone charges.

Not much of this game made me sour except Salty. All part of the process. Team still needs a little time to adjust. Overall I thought it was nice seeing the majority of the hitters taking deep counts. However I do think Red needs to give Salty and Hech shorter leashes in tight situations.
