RANT: Get off Red's back

I am seeing Redmond blamed for everything this year and not just on this site but on social media as well. I know it is a tradition to blame the manager or head coach in sports but it is becoming borderline ridiculous. You have to at least be fair.

1) He could not pinch hit for Salty in game one with the bases loaded

2) He was right to leave Koehler in to start the 7th today.

If you disagree with either of those, explain to me why. Of course it is also easier to defend your position after Red's decision failed. A decision failing does not equate to him being wrong though.

Only one I'd disagree with is the Koehler decision. Koehler has history of tiring late in starts, and once he got near 90 pitches Redmond should know at that point that his stuff wasn't good enough to get by hitters anymore. I love Koehler and he deserves that rotation spot no doubt, but he doesn't need to be going 7 or 8 innings to be successful.

It wasn't exactly the wrong call to bring him back out given the pitch count, but people who have watched Koehler regularly should've known that home run was bound to happen.

Salty I have no issue with. He may suck against LHP, but he needs to be able to do better than strikeouts and double plays if he's making $7 million a year and a starter. Salty failed that game. The entire offense failed today, and that should be the story coming out of the series. Pitching wise, we should've been able to take 2 games out of the series. I'm also of the belief that things will start evening out and the team will start hitting with RISP and the XBH will show up. Bad three game stretches happen to every team. Ours just happened to be at the start of the season.

I'm not a fan of Redmond. There's no denying that. I like his personality for the most part with the players minus the incident where he called Jose out last year.

Out of frustration I didn't like Salty batting that bases loaded. We all knew what was going to happen and it did happen. On the other hand, I understand you can't pull out your 7 million or so catcher in those situation as frustrating as it was. I don't have any issues with what other people had issues with the last few days.

I am going to take your word for it that you thought that was before the HR based on his history but what if he takes TK out and Ramos or Dyson or anyone gives up that 2-run HR instead. How bad would Red look?

Like I mentioned with TK in another thread, IF he does PH for Salty and the PH hits into a rally killing DP -- Red would again be blasted. The right move in that situation was to leave Salty in and yes the fact its early in the season matters. It was the first opportunity had in 2015 with the bases loaded and 0 outs. Its not as if he was in a prolonged slump (no, last year doesn't count in that spot).

Angry Admin reminds me of angry Tommy Hutton...

I will say this about the whole Red scenario... people will always look to shift blame to someone when something doesnt work as it is supposed to. Yes, Red made the right calls, but we all know that that rarely means you will escape criticism if the scenario doesnt work out. The blame has to go somewhere, and the manager/head coach is pretty much the spot where it will always fall.

In defense of Red, could an argument for keeping TK in that Red already used 9 arms in the first two games? Granted some were used for only 1 or 2 outs, but still. If you can get a starter to go an extra inning to help give the bullpen some extra rest before the off day, it seems like a logical decision.

Actually if Red had pinch hit for salty and the game ends up being tied after a double play, I don't think anyone blasts him. Tie game, and even casuals know salty is garbage. It's not like the situation came up in the 3rd inning.

Incorrect IMO. Pinch hitting for your starting catcher in his first opportunity of the year is the wrong move. If he is not going to be allowed to hit there, stop starting him.

I think what is important here @squall is most of us agree Salty is not a guy we want starting but we don't really have many options. Regardless of that though, he IS starting so factoring that part in -- I don't see how Red has any choice but to let him hit in that spot. You 100% absolutely can not pinch hit for your everyday starting catcher in his first opportunity of the year.

He needs to do it in the future when the "its early" excuse doesn't apply.

Agreed

I would have pinch hit for Salty but I can fully understand all the reasons why it would also have been a bad move ... but when you give someone the chance to succeed, you also give them the chance to fail. It was a home opener with a record live audience and winning was sooooo important. I just think Ichiro would have been more likely to tie the game. If it had happened earlier, then fair enough pinch hitting would have been dumb as fuck, but it was the seventh. It the score had been tied or we were winning, then Salty obviously stays. Salty bats seventh for a reason, but at the end of the day there are more enough shoulders to pin the blame on for the defeat, not just Salty's or Red's.

The "he's a human being" aspect is just BS. He's a pro ball-player, so if circumstances dictated that someone who was a better hitter than him was needed to do a certian job, then he needs to take that on the chin. He'll have plenty other chances to shine this year.

I have no problem with what happened with TK. Just one really bad pitch and he was punished. Wouldn't have mattered if we had actually gotten some offense going. There are eight guys on the team who are supposed to score runs, FFS.

I disagree about #1. The statistically correct move in that situation was to pinch-hit for Salty. The Braves had just brought in a lefty reliever so he was staying in, regardless. The correct move was not to bring in Ichiro, but, rather, to let Jeff Baker hit, and let Mathis catch the rest of the game (which was the remaining 2 innings). I could understand the human aspect of it in that you want to trust your player in the first game, but I wouldn't say that no manager would make a move there. That doesn't have much to do with the first game, imo. It has more to do with the Marlins not caring for platoon splits. They do it over and over again every year. We're basically the only small market team in the big leagues that doesn't platoon at any position. Even big market teams do it at certain positions. It's dumb. Speaking of which, what exactly is Jeff Baker's role on this team if you're not going to use him there? The one thing he does well is hit lefties.

As for the Koehler situation, I agree. He was at, I believe, 88 pitches starting the 7th inning, and had done well the inning before against the top of the Braves order. I had no problem leaving him in there. The fact that he tends to hit a wall at certain points in the game seems like a mental issue that he needs to get over. I don't mind wanting another inning out of him since that's something that has to be done over the course of the year. You can't overuse the pen every night. It didn't help that Mat Latos couldn't even pitch an inning the night before either. You want to see your SP's go deep into games.
