As promised, here is the thread so that everybody who participated in the draft can post a quick paragraph or so giving everybody an update on how their current prospects are doing. Here are the list of everybody who was involved and their picks as a reminder.

  1. pollyvonwag - C Arturo Rodriguez - Greensboro Grasshoppers
  2. SongInTheAir - SP Justin Nicolino - New Orleans Zephyrs
  3. Hammerhead - 2B Avery Romero - Jupiter Hammerheads
  4. Schnellders
  5. MrAndMrsFish - SP Tyler Kolek, Greensboro Grasshoppers
  6. CoastieMike - RP Nick Wittgren New Orleans Zephyrs
  7. dim - 2B Mason Davis Greensboro Grasshoppers

I'll start by updating everybody on Mason Davis. I had relatively high hopes for Davis after he posted an .861 OPS in Batavia last season and showing solid plate discipline. Unfortunately, Davis has struggled in GBoro, posting a .655 OPS and has only walked 11 times in 169 AB's. He's been decent on the base paths, but the biggest concern from scouts seems to be the lack of power in a prime hitter's league, with only 10 XBH's all season. It seems given his current pace that Davis could potentially repeat Greensboro next season. Already 22 years old, there's not all that much time to wait and see if he can develop any sort of power. While he doesn't strike out all that much, the number of ground outs are concerning, and a guy who's survived in the past on mainly contact should be producing higher than a .249 BA. Overall, Davis has underperformed, although as a 19th round pick it is an accomplishment in its own right that he was able to make Greensboro in the first place. Still some time left in the season for Davis to rebound, although he's actually gotten worse as the season's gone on, as his .710 OPS in April fell to .613 in May and is now .563 in June thus far. Major room to improve.

Justin Nicolino has been on the verge of being called up for a long time now. Still, though, he keeps pitching in New Orleans for the Triple-A Zephyrs. Nicolino saw his rotationmate Jose Ureña get the call and he is performing well after a rough start. Nicolino presses on. For the season, he has a 4-3 record with a 2.96 ERA over 73 innings. That seems excellent, especially for the hitters heaven that is the Pacific Coast League, but a further look into his numbers show some cause for concern. Nicolino has never been a strikeout guy, but his 5.05 K/9 means he'll have to work harder than other pitchers to get out of big innings and to avoid rallies. His 2.47 BB/9 is a career high, as he usually sits around 1.5 in that category. For a pitcher to get away with giving up as much contact as Nicolino does, he needs to be able to keep guys off base as much as possible. Also, the increased walk rate shows a slip in his control. Also because he doesn't strike guys out, he needs to ensure that he induces weak contact by hitting his spots and getting good movement on the ball. Nicolino's FIP sits at 4.66, but he has always been a pitcher who outperforms his FIP due to his pitching style. He has room to improve and with the Marlins all but out of the playoff picture already, there is no need to rush him. Hopefully with a full year at Triple-A, Nicolino will be able to improve on the things he needs to improve upon in order to make the solid contribution expected of him as a part of the 2016 rotation.
