According to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy, free agent right-hander Seth McClung is close to inking a minor league deal with the Marlins.
McClung posted a 4.94 ERA and an even uglier 1.63 WHIP in 62 innings (two starts) last season for the Brewers. He'll likely serve in a long relief role for the Fish and may even collect some emergency spot starts.

Not a fan of the K/BB ratio, but still I like the strategy of collecting as many experienced bullpen arms as possible, especially on minor league deals.

I was watching him in spring training once when he was with the Devil Rays. One of the other pitchers said that he paid 25 cents for McClung's rookie card. McClung told him that he got ripped off....and that is a true story. McClung has a great right arm but he has never learned how to pitch.

The phrase "throw sh*t against the wall and see what sticks" can be used appropriately here if a slight alteration is made to his name.

The new Slogan for the marlins should be

"Loading Up the Bullpen one Fish at a time." If we end up signing Kiko and Gregg our bullpen will be officially stacked!

Loading up New Orleans' bullpen is more like it.

But that's fine. Costs us nothing.

Very true but all of these guys good possible beat each other out in spring training and whoever doesn't make the opening day roster has a really good chance of being in the Majors within two months with all the history we've had with bullpen arms in the past.

This is great! I like these signings....Turnbow and McClung. What is the risk?? It could be a good reward if both can do anything for us. At least they were once decent.

he was pretty good in 08. but nothing special in any of his other seasons in the majors. i'm still hoping we can sign gregg because every other of these guys (turnbow, veras, mcclung) are hit or miss and gregg has been pretty solid over his career span.

I hope the Marlins hurry up and sign Gregg because there is not much else left in free agency as far as righty relievers go.

Did I miss a signing or is Mike MacDougal still out there?

Well, at least the Marlins are doing something to provide potential bullpen arms. None of these guys project as fantastic, but there's not much more you could expect.

I know I've said it before, but I'd rather we be getting guys like Sanches, Gardner, and Miller: Guys who were lighting up AAA and didn't have a fair shot at the ML level.

McClung...he has 430 MLB innings. He likely is who he is, and who he is isn't very good.

I'm hoping they see something in these guys (Veras, McClung, Turnbow) that they think they can fix. To me it just seems they're signing a bunch of guys who can throw 95 but can't find the strike zone. The guys we've had luck with are the guys who don't throw hard.

I agree with you. I think Scott Strickland and Chris Schroder are two of the kind of pitchers you are talking about that the Marlins have signed as they have been solid AAA pitchers. In fact, Stickland has pretty good major league numbers but he has been buried in AAA for a while.

McClung will make $600K if he makes the Marlins, plus he can earn another $50K in incentives.

That's what every team who has ever signed McClung has said.

McClung can be very effective when used properly. Milwaukee's problem last year was throwing Seth into a starter's role (due to injuries) without working him into the role. Seth had a VERY productive 2008 and April/May of 2009.

I have no doubt in my mind that he can and will prove a nice addition to the BP in Florida. The only thing I must warn you though is he can be a little shaky at times with runners on. Seems like he fairs much better when starting an inning opposed to coming in mid-inning.

and WOW. This can guy scorch a fastball.... consistently upper-90's.

I find it intriguing that your name on the site is based on McClung.

Not sure why we haven't jumped. Low priced and he was very decent last year. Good closer insurance.
