About this blog

I just post random stuff here.

Rogers Hornsby

Had a five year stretch where he slashed .402/.474/.690 averaging 29 homers and only 40 strikeouts a year. That would be impossible today. Because Rogers Hornsby is dead.

20/20/20/20

20 homers 20 stolen bases 20 doubles 20 triples   This was done by Frank Schulte in 1911, and then again by Willie Mays in 1957. From 1871 through 2006, those were the only two occurrences of that stat line. Then Jimmy Rollins and Curtis Granderson BOTH achieved this in 2007. It has not happened since.   Rollins and Granderson both had 38 doubles that year. Rollins is the only one who surpassed 30 in three of the four categories [HR, 2B, SB]. Rol

40 HR, RBI >= 3.5xHR, and at least .280 BA

With this particular set of stats, we end up with a total of 15 players. This happened somewhat frequently between 1922 and 1949, when 13 players reached this threshold. It stopped happening entirely after 1949.   Until Manny Ramirez [1999] and Todd Helton [2000] did it in back to back years.   Lou Gehrig did this three times!   Also, look at Manny's 1999 season, it was ridiculous. He drove in 165! Those 1990s Cleveland lineups, man.
