Marlins Edge Cardinals in Thrilling Spring Training Matchup



The Miami Marlins edged out the St. Louis Cardinals in a thrilling 9-8 spring training battle on February 24th, 2024.

The game erupted early, with the Marlins plating two runs in the first inning thanks to Jesús Sánchez's single. The Cardinals countered swiftly with a run in the bottom half, but Miami answered back with a three-run rally in the 3rd, sparked by a double from Bryan De La Cruz.

Tristan Gray extended the Marlins' lead with a solo homer in the 4th, but the Cardinals chipped away, eventually grabbing the lead in the 7th. However, the Marlins displayed resilience, regaining the lead in the 8th on a double by Griffin Conine.

The Cardinals threatened again in the 9th, scoring a run, but ultimately fell short as the Marlins secured the narrow victory.

On the mound, Ryan Weathers started for Miami and allowed two runs in two innings. Six relievers saw action, with Declan Cronin showcasing the most promising performance. Cronin tossed a scoreless inning with one strikeout, boosting his roster hopes. Bryan Hoeing, Josh Simpson, Austin Roberts, Kent Emanuel, and Jeff Lindgren combined for the remaining six innings, surrendering six runs.

The Marlins return to action on Sunday, hosting the Washington Nationals at 1:10 PM. Jesus Luzardo will take the mound for Miami, likely pitching two innings.
