Marlins Drop Third Straight in 9-3 Loss

The Miami Marlins fell to 0-3 on the young season after a 9-3 defeat to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday. In a recurring issue, the Marlins' bullpen was pressed into service early. Relievers tossed five innings, bringing their season total to a concerning 19 innings already.

Starting pitcher Ryan Weathers looked promising initially but faltered, lasting only four innings. He surrendered three runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out five batters.

Sixto Sanchez provided two innings of relief but battled a decline in fastball velocity and was hampered by a fielding error. He conceded one earned run and averaged a worrying 92 mph on his fastball. This marked Sanchez's first appearance with just one day of rest, raising questions about its impact on his velocity.

Andrew Nardi's struggles continued, allowing four runs in a single inning that effectively sealed the Marlins' fate. Previously considered a reliable reliever, Nardi has faltered outside of his first two outs of the season, now with six earned runs in a mere 1.2 innings pitched.

Anthony Bender offered a lone bright spot for Miami's pitching staff, tossing a scoreless ninth inning. He struck out three while allowing just one hit and no walks.

Offensively, Jake Burger remained hot with a double and his fifth RBI of the season. Jesus Sanchez added two hits and two RBIs. However, Jazz Chisholm Jr. remained hitless, extending his slump. Luis Arraez, the reigning NL batting champion, finally registered his first hit after going hitless in the first two games. Look for him to find his rhythm soon.

The Marlins will look to avoid a four-game sweep on Sunday as Trevor Rogers takes the mound at 1:40 PM.
