Marlins Blow 5-0 Lead, Fall to 0-4

The 2024 season continues to be a struggle for the Miami Marlins, who fell 9-7 to the Pittsburgh Pirates in ten innings on Sunday. Miami remains winless at 0-4 to begin the year.

The Marlins got off to a hot start with a 5-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a grand slam by Jazz Chisholm. The blast was Miami's first home run of the season, but their lead wouldn't hold. Notably, they became the last team in MLB to hit a homer this year, but ended up hitting three in this game. Avisail Garcia homered in the fourth inning, which may quiet the boos he had been hearing since Opening Day. The other home run came from Nick Gordon, a pinch-hitter, in the ninth inning to tie the game at seven.

Miami's bullpen woes continued as they fell in the tenth inning when the Pirates plated two runs off Tanner Scott. It marked the second extra-inning game of the season already for the Marlins. The bullpen has been heavily taxed, throwing a combined 24 innings through just four games, and the results have been concerning.

Starting pitcher Trevor Rogers pitched better than the score indicates. Despite allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings, Rogers was the victim of soft contact and shaky defense. He struck out six batters but also walked four, failing to earn a decision. Scott took the loss for Miami.

Making his Miami debut in relief, Vladimir Gutierrez surrendered a three-run home run that put Pittsburgh in the lead. Gutierrez threw four innings, striking out four batters while allowing only that one homer. He threw 80 pitches and will likely be unavailable for the next series, necessitating a roster move by the Marlins.

The Marlins will look to avoid their first ever 0-5 start when they host the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. Max Meyer will get the start on the mound for Miami.
