Griffin Conine Rakes in AAA, While Marlins Struggle for Home Runs

Griffin Conine is tearing up Triple-A with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, while the Miami Marlins languish near the bottom of Major League Baseball in home runs. The question begs asking: why isn't Conine getting a shot in the majors?

The 26-year-old son of Marlins legend Jeff Conine is arguably having the best season of his minor league career. He leads the Marlins' system with 13 home runs and ranks seventh across all of Minor League Baseball. Power hitting is nothing new for Conine, but a key improvement is boosting his case for a promotion.

Prior to 2024, strikeouts plagued Conine. This year, however, he's struck out just 60 times in 217 plate appearances. This newfound discipline has fueled a surge in his on-base percentage, pushing his OPS to a team-leading .921 and resulting in 38 RBIs – another team high.

While achieved against AAA pitching, it's worth noting that Conine's OPS would lead the Marlins. His home runs and RBIs would do the same.

Realistically, Conine's numbers might dip slightly in the majors. However, the Marlins' lineup desperately needs a spark, and he's currently toiling in AAA while the team struggles offensively.

Conine's family connection is a feel-good story, but his promotion should be based on merit. Even if his name wasn't Conine, his performance warrants a call-up.

The 2024 playoffs are likely out of reach for Miami, but Conine could be a key contributor on Opening Day 2025. So, the Marlins need to ask themselves: what are they waiting for?
