The Reds want the best catcher in baseball and they want their 5th best prospect to be the centerpiece. Add the Reds to the list of teams that can suck a big bag of dicks.

Why can't it be both though? Getting the right players and teaching them right takes time so why not work on the fan experience along the way? And the people who work on the fan experience aren't the one who work on the on field product so it's not like working on either should take away from the other. I hate the insinuation that working on the fan experience means they aren't working on improving the on field product.

This is going to hurt so bad wen Straily gets picked up by the Patriots and replaces Gronkowski seamlessly.

it's just a stupid premise that there is some abstract force that is behind this. There's no point to the article. For instance: Beckett and Lowell were traded for Hanley Castillo spent 10+ years with the fish and made majority of his $ as marlin Uggla was rule 5 and absolutely horrible after the trade Since being traded, Nolasco has been worth 5 WAR (after 18 with the fish)

Hows this work? I just used a screenshot from that twitter thing, I didn't know where they got the image of the new rendering from originally to show a wider view. Here's the "original" (neweest rendering) for reference:

Far superior defensively? JT is the best all around catcher for a reason. 1) Statcast the past four years has proven he's the fastest, as he led that category the past 4 seasons. 2) JT has the best pop time in the league because he has the 3rd strongest arm and the 3rd fastest exchange rate. 3) Those things allow JT to have one of the best caught stealing percentages in the league 4) JT has improved his power every year and he's been hitting the ball better every year. 5) JT's last 4 years Def rating according to fangraphs - 8.8 / 10.3 / 12.6 / 7.9 = 9.9 AVG meanwhile Barnhart 5.9 / 11 / 14.9 / 5.5 = 9.325 AVG So yeah, not only is JT, FAR superior with the bat, he's actually faster, stronger arm, better pop time, better defensively and he's better at framing (he's average at it but Barnhart is awful at it) https://www.mlb.com/news/jt-realmuto-may-be-mlbs-best-catcher/c-282201118 https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=10200&position=C https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=11739&position=C https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/sortable/index.php?cid=1918718 Since I took you to school, here are my sources. The MLB article is by far the most interesting. And last by not least, you don't get better and build for the future by trading away the best catcher in baseball and letting the team get value out of an OK 28 year old catcher who isn't getting better and won't be part of this team long-term. "hey we can rebuild and compete at the same time guys" - Adam Gase

I'd add in Conley if he gets hot. Guerrero too honestly. Honestly I dont think they should hold out any bullpen arm thats desired if it can net you a fairly decent prospect, since bullpens are easy as fuck to figure out long term. Sell high on any and all of them. Walker for sure.
  14. 5 points
Helps. Their specific needs would be more obvious and they’d be closer to contention in that scenario. They could bump the off-season spending up to this coming off-season instead of the next off-season.

Hey guys, I think we should Trade him to Daimondbacks for Kevin Cron, and Geraldo Perdomo, and Domingo Leyba. I am surprised nobody has brought this idea up before.

Having been at the game on sunday, what a fun time...hadn't been to the stadium in over 2 years (since my dad passed) but had a great time and the team looked good against a great pitcher, and Sandy pitched a GEM....will be back soon to the park with my kiddos.

Only Urena is tradeable right now. I can't believe anyone thinks it's ok to trade any of the other starters right now. We finally have SP depth you keep all of it to see which ones become part of the future here. No way you give up on any of them now. Why is this even a question considering our past? Castillo and Paddack show that you don't sacrifice prospects for quick fixes... Brad Hand and Andrew Miller show that you don't give up struggling major leaguers... The bats will come in other ways. With all the pitching being accumulated they can focus on bats in the next few drafts, there's still international free agents, you can sign in free agency when the time is right, some of the minor leaguer bats will pan out eventually, and lastly if more of the pitchers pan out than expected than you can ultimately trade from that depth but not yet. No way Jose.

and just think 100 years from now all these players would be dead so it's good they traded them before that

Ok everyone. I'm finally getting around to my update/thoughts/photos on the park renovations. Sorry there are a lot of images here, but I wanted to give those REAL fans that haven't been a look at the updated park. Entering the park - the new fences around the park seem very imposing and unfriendly. They also block off what was supposed to be the area for the home run sculpture next year, which I find interesting and perhaps telling? They finally put banners up on the parking garages, and you can also see the new fences: Coming into the home plate entrance area, they put some nice looking mural type things. I thought this was neat - in the windows, they put each player and where they're from. The area behind home plate and the info booth (now the Marlins Member "headquarters" or something to that effect) is now just completely empty. There used to be a few concession stands here that had been closed since early in the new park the concessions were removed so now it's just open and you can go look out the window if you want. My fears from FanFest in regards to the concession appearance were allayed - at FanFest they were unpainted (just white) and had no customization - they just weren't finished yet. Now each stand had its own look, and it turned out nicely. Before deciding on what to eat, I circled the park several times checking all the options out. Aside from the two 3o5 places, food pricing is roughly the same as before, but the food options/quality looked better. The food looked more appetizing than before. I wound up going to "La Pepa" and got a "spanish flavored/inspired" (something along those lines) pulled pork sandwich: It was good, though could've used more meat. The Bobblehead museum is now in the outfield/center field near the Billy's Kid Zone. To emphasize the park renovations are not completed (or promote the "cheap Jeter" narrative, you can see in (closed) the upper deck that concessions up there have not been renovated. I can't comment on the second deck, but since it's open, I'd guess they redid the concessions on that level? Although they didn't mention it in anything I've seen. --- They put picnic benches in the outfield concourse: I'll continue in the next post.

I am a big proponent of letting kids in free. The money right now is in TV, but real fans are made by experiencing the game action in person. If you get them early, they will become fans for life. That is how you build a fan base. Plus if kids are coming, then you still make money off their parents and concessions. I don't really see the downside.

per ESPN: Said Mets manager Mickey Callaway: "I saw a guy trying to get out of the way of a fastball that was going to hit him in the face." When Stanton got hit in the face you saw a guy trying to get out of the way. He collapsed his feet and was already falling to avoid contact. With Lagares, you had someone trying to block the ball with the bat. His body language said nothing about moving out of the way. If it is a swing when it happened to Stanton and then for Reed (Johnson) one pitch later to get a strikeout, then there is no reason why this should go as a HBP. I mean if a pitch was coming at you and you swung the bat at it to try to deflect it and it still hit you, what do you think the call would be?

I’m going to go with ‘helps’ assuming that it’s a result of getting production from our “future core”. If the reason we are .500 is because of guys like Harold Ramirez, Andy, Alfaro, Diaz*, Harrison*, and the SP staff, this is a HUGE positive to the rebuild as we will be checking off boxes along the way. Regarding the draft picks, if this was the NFL that would be a concern. There are too many ways to acquire talent in baseball (International, trade deadline, Rule 5) for that to outweigh positives from guys already in the system

I’m good either way honestly. Edit - Watched Bleday vs UGA, and one thing that scares me with him is the length in his swing, and his lack of consistency with his front leg. You see his stance at times be wide open, at other times be closed off. This shows up in non-2 strike counts as well, so it’s not an approach thing. Vaughn is a pure hitter. He reminds me of Peter Alonso. Put me down for Vaughn at 4 if he’s there. If he goes before 4, Bleday is fine.

The tanking thing is comical to me. This isn’t the nba or nfl this is mlb. The drop off between first overall and second overall usually isn’t a huge deal. To build a team you need to draft well throughout the draft. Make smart moves with international signings. Smart trades etc. Sure if you end up sucking and pick first great. If you pick second you still have a great chance of getting a great player there. Plus right now seeing the young players , pitchers in particular doing well and developing in big league action is more important than tanking for the first overall pick.

@hovertical @DTrain @pollythewog @SixYearItch I apologize... I'm cluttering up so many threads pointing out how everyone thinks we suck when they're actually all right. It's true we have sucked for over 15 years now and we will continue to suck until we somehow get the last winning out of a World Series again. There is no middle ground other than that. The team will never take positive steps forward until they've actually got their hands on that next World Series trophy. There is no reason to show pride in the team I've followed closely for 26 years. My bad.

If they deemphasize the "baseball" portion, they may lose out on the main demographic of FanFests - kids who want autographs. There seems to be a tension in the marketing department between appealing to the typical baseball crowd (families with kids) and some idealized version of the Miami nightlife crowd. I get that for games, but not a FanFest.
