The Reds want the best catcher in baseball and they want their 5th best prospect to be the centerpiece. Add the Reds to the list of teams that can suck a big bag of dicks.

Why can't it be both though? Getting the right players and teaching them right takes time so why not work on the fan experience along the way? And the people who work on the fan experience aren't the one who work on the on field product so it's not like working on either should take away from the other. I hate the insinuation that working on the fan experience means they aren't working on improving the on field product.

This is going to hurt so bad wen Straily gets picked up by the Patriots and replaces Gronkowski seamlessly.

it's just a stupid premise that there is some abstract force that is behind this. There's no point to the article. For instance: Beckett and Lowell were traded for Hanley Castillo spent 10+ years with the fish and made majority of his $ as marlin Uggla was rule 5 and absolutely horrible after the trade Since being traded, Nolasco has been worth 5 WAR (after 18 with the fish)

Hows this work? I just used a screenshot from that twitter thing, I didn't know where they got the image of the new rendering from originally to show a wider view. Here's the "original" (neweest rendering) for reference:

Far superior defensively? JT is the best all around catcher for a reason. 1) Statcast the past four years has proven he's the fastest, as he led that category the past 4 seasons. 2) JT has the best pop time in the league because he has the 3rd strongest arm and the 3rd fastest exchange rate. 3) Those things allow JT to have one of the best caught stealing percentages in the league 4) JT has improved his power every year and he's been hitting the ball better every year. 5) JT's last 4 years Def rating according to fangraphs - 8.8 / 10.3 / 12.6 / 7.9 = 9.9 AVG meanwhile Barnhart 5.9 / 11 / 14.9 / 5.5 = 9.325 AVG So yeah, not only is JT, FAR superior with the bat, he's actually faster, stronger arm, better pop time, better defensively and he's better at framing (he's average at it but Barnhart is awful at it) https://www.mlb.com/news/jt-realmuto-may-be-mlbs-best-catcher/c-282201118 https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=10200&position=C https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=11739&position=C https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/sortable/index.php?cid=1918718 Since I took you to school, here are my sources. The MLB article is by far the most interesting. And last by not least, you don't get better and build for the future by trading away the best catcher in baseball and letting the team get value out of an OK 28 year old catcher who isn't getting better and won't be part of this team long-term. Ok everyone. I'm finally getting around to my update/thoughts/photos on the park renovations. Sorry there are a lot of images here, but I wanted to give those REAL fans that haven't been a look at the updated park. Entering the park - the new fences around the park seem very imposing and unfriendly. They also block off what was supposed to be the area for the home run sculpture next year, which I find interesting and perhaps telling? They finally put banners up on the parking garages, and you can also see the new fences: Coming into the home plate entrance area, they put some nice looking mural type things. I thought this was neat - in the windows, they put each player and where they're from. The area behind home plate and the info booth (now the Marlins Member "headquarters" or something to that effect) is now just completely empty. There used to be a few concession stands here that had been closed since early in the new park the concessions were removed so now it's just open and you can go look out the window if you want. My fears from FanFest in regards to the concession appearance were allayed - at FanFest they were unpainted (just white) and had no customization - they just weren't finished yet. Now each stand had its own look, and it turned out nicely. Before deciding on what to eat, I circled the park several times checking all the options out. Aside from the two 3o5 places, food pricing is roughly the same as before, but the food options/quality looked better. The food looked more appetizing than before. I wound up going to "La Pepa" and got a "spanish flavored/inspired" (something along those lines) pulled pork sandwich: It was good, though could've used more meat. The Bobblehead museum is now in the outfield/center field near the Billy's Kid Zone. To emphasize the park renovations are not completed (or promote the "cheap Jeter" narrative, you can see in (closed) the upper deck that concessions up there have not been renovated. I can't comment on the second deck, but since it's open, I'd guess they redid the concessions on that level? Although they didn't mention it in anything I've seen. --- They put picnic benches in the outfield concourse: I'll continue in the next post.

I am a big proponent of letting kids in free. The money right now is in TV, but real fans are made by experiencing the game action in person. If you get them early, they will become fans for life. That is how you build a fan base. Plus if kids are coming, then you still make money off their parents and concessions. I don't really see the downside.

per ESPN: Said Mets manager Mickey Callaway: "I saw a guy trying to get out of the way of a fastball that was going to hit him in the face." When Stanton got hit in the face you saw a guy trying to get out of the way. He collapsed his feet and was already falling to avoid contact. With Lagares, you had someone trying to block the ball with the bat. His body language said nothing about moving out of the way. If it is a swing when it happened to Stanton and then for Reed (Johnson) one pitch later to get a strikeout, then there is no reason why this should go as a HBP. I mean if a pitch was coming at you and you swung the bat at it to try to deflect it and it still hit you, what do you think the call would be?

The lowest point is going lower. This is really an all time level terrible team. Can’t score, other than in one game out of ten, and absolutely no baby cake or jumbo shrimp player will even make a dent in changing that. Harrison and Diaz would plainly be overmatched at the MLB level. Team must hit it really big on their draft picks on hitters over the next few years as the Astros did with Correa, Springer and Bergman and as the Cubs did or the hopelessness will go on for a very long time. Really upsetting that this front office couldn’t turn Stanton, Ozuna, Yelich, Realmuto etc into at least one frontline can’t miss hitting prospect. They had an advantage that no other rebuilding team has ever had and for my mind they butchered it badly. I’m sorry but their starting pitching prospects are just average at best. Richards and Smith, their best, were acquired other than via the trades. Pablo came from the only good trade they made. We’ll see about Sixto. Gallen and Niedert seem like right hand Nicolino’s. Hope I’m wrong but I’m skeptical. Other highlighted trade acquisitions look like relievers, including Sandy. Really down on what this front office has accomplished so far. Don’t see them as much of an improvement over Loria, which is a very very low bar.

Today all MLB players managers and coaches will wear #42 to remind us all of how many millions of dollars Wei Yin Chen is still owed by the Miami Marlins. A very bold statement being made by MLB, be proud of this day for bringing awareness to this travesty. It's not often that all of MLB bands together to protest one horrible player like this so this is a landmark moment for all of MLB and all of sports. In a statement, former Marlins team president David Samson said "We signed Wei Yin Chen back in 2016 to be a number 2 starter... and he definitely has been that, a number 2."

Marlins have a chance to take a series for the first time this season against future NLWC opponent Atlanta Braves. It's a battle of the lefties as Caleb Smith squares off against Sean Newcomb. Smith has a short outing his first time out, going just five innings while punching out eight and allowing a couple of runs. This was of course the infamous bunt foul "hit by pitch" game. Smith did only walk one but his pitch count got a little too high to go too deep in the game. Newcomb's first start was even shorter than Smith's, going only 4 innings. Newcomb struck out three and allowed 10 baserunners, four on walks, but allowed no runs. One hopes he continues to have command issues and the Fish take advantage.

@hovertical @DTrain @pollythewog @SixYearItch I apologize... I'm cluttering up so many threads pointing out how everyone thinks we suck when they're actually all right. It's true we have sucked for over 15 years now and we will continue to suck until we somehow get the last winning out of a World Series again. There is no middle ground other than that. The team will never take positive steps forward until they've actually got their hands on that next World Series trophy. There is no reason to show pride in the team I've followed closely for 26 years. My bad.

Again, anyone who currently identifies themselves as a Marlins fan...is a Marlins fan. There would be no reason for anyone to follow the Marlins unless they're a fan - let alone come onto this mb and post, argue, and post again. I loathe Jeter and Sherman and have disagreed with about 90% of what they've done. I know I'm a Marlins fan though. I care about the franchise and will walk away from following baseball entirely before I'd ever change to another team. Others seem to agree with about 90% of what Jeter and Sherman have done. I've never once said you aren't a fan of the team though. I know you are - I don't agree with MOST of your reasoning but I'd never say you aren't a fan. You can converse about the team and reference stats, historical moments, and get the inside jokes so many of us use over and over. And then there are those in the middle who also post regularly on here and probably want to kill all members of both the above referenced groups and regain some measure of sanity on the board. I certainly wouldn't think of you as any less of a fan either. To say those of us who refuse to buy merchandise, attend games, etc. due to the path the new regime has taken doesn't make me any less of a fan. There's nothing wrong with expressing your outrage at the direction the owners took by refusing to give them another dime until you feel they are actually trying to reinvest in the team you care about. Conversely, there's nothing wrong with continuing to be excited about a new design scheme and wanting to show your support of the direction the team is headed. We just believe in different things yet we're both still diehard fans.
