  1. Wow. This is cool. Also, this is absolutely not a hire for the sake of saying they got the first female GM, she has legitimate baseball credentials so that is important. This is not just a PR move.

  2. That's actually really cool. Making the right kind of history.

  3. Commissioner Rob Manfred released the following statement today, regarding the future of baseball: "I hate baseball," said the commissioner.

  4. And he wasn't even fired, his contract expired and they didn't reach an agreement to stay.

  5. This would not be a PR move by Jeter, but guys, this is a huge PR move based on the fact that for the past few hours this is all that is being talked about on MLB radio, and I assume on the TV network. Massive positive everything about the hiring, from the historic aspect, to the pure quality of the hiring and her qualifications to everything about the Marlins organization from top to bottom. It is all covered and the stain of the Loria years (with Samson) is clearly been removed. How this affects player desires to consider Miami, we do not know and she is known for being a really good and

  7. Excited and proud of this team. Everyone involved looks good. Smart. Organized. A community builder who wants to bring in fans and supports youth baseball.she has a history of working with winning franchises. Doesn't come with baggage...in fact probably lightens some of the baggage we carry! Good job Marlins and Jeets.

  8. She has better credentials and more experience than some other GMs have had. Passed over for way too long.

  9. I speculated a few weeks ago in this post: https://www.marlinsbaseball.com/topic/77649-marlins-hill-parting-ways/page/3/?tab=comments#comment-1747000&ct=1605315211 that perhaps the next person hired would be titled “GM” as opposed to “POBO” as POBO implies a higher up rung on the corporate ladder than just GM, even if it’s pretty much the same job tasks. We will probably not know the real reason for some time why they went with the GM title instead of “President of Baseball Operations”. My own personal opinion is that Jeter is a pretty traditional baseball guy and GM is jus

  10. Pointing out something that annoyed me... When Hill was let go there were several social media posts complaining that a black man was fired yet in the end it led to another minority being hired in his place and a woman at that. Some people are pretty quick to point fingers and claim discrimination when completely unwarranted. Ultimately neither the firing of the black man nor the hiring of the Asian American woman had anything to do with race or ethnicity.

  11. Loving the pretty clear consensus that this isn't a token hiring despite it being historic. This is legitimately one of the most positive Marlins stories ever. It's being celebrated everywhere with virtually zero negativity and the usual backhanded Marlins comments.

  15. This is such a great move. As much as we were able to finally appreciate Mike Hill lately this could be a legitimate upgrade too. So proud to have this team finally making smart moves.

  18. Didn't mean it that way at all. Mike Hill was "overpriced" because Loria gave him a hefty pay increase before leaving and Jeter felt that price was too high so I'm curious what he decided to offer Ng. Nothing to do with gender, just factual that she takes the place of a guy who was being paid too much.
    2 points
  19. The gender is a definite possiblity as a reason why but with all the great things I've heard about her over the years it seems like that would be enough to make her gender irrelevant. The common thought was normally that she's so good that it doesn't even matter that she's a woman... and that's the way it should be and why this is a great hire. It's upsetting how many groundbreaking moves are done just for the sake of being groundbreaking and now with the right intentions.

  20. You're right on this one. She's been a rumored great hire for years now, she's a better hire than many men, if she wasn't a girl this wouldn't be considered outside the box.
    2 points
  21. For 1 day at least, we're not the bad news bears.
    2 points
  22. Wait, so its just outside the box because she doesnt have a penis between her legs? Shows that as much as things change, some things havent. This is far far from being 'outside' the box in terms of experience and credentials. Some things never change tbh. Pretty fucking sad. Going to be just as 'outside the box' as when the first female coaches an NBA team. (Hopefully in 2021-2022) Great fucking hire btw. I hope she is getting paid what any other insanely qualified GM gets paid.

  23. Finally she gets the job. Seemed to be interviewed for multiple jobs every year.

  25. To be fair, we didn't suddenly become the Yankees just because Jeter took over. This franchise is always going to have to be cost-effective. It's just the way it is, but it isn't necessarily a bad thing. Look what the Rays have been able to do with an incredibly limited payroll. So long as the FO makes wise, shrewd decisions and is willing to spend SOME money to get better/stay competitive, I'm fine with it. Look what we were able to do this year with pennies. Would it be nice to have a New York payroll? Of course, but that's just not how things work for the Marlins.

  26. Considering her ties to the Yankees and to Jeter specifically I wonder if Jeter has been eyeing this hire since he came to Miami.
    1 point
  27. Literally, with her resume, there was zero reason she hadn't been hired yet (outside of the sad, obvious fact). I like seeing new faces being given a change to do something as opposed to a retread hire (see: LaRussa) for a role. Pretty stoked considering they have someone with her credentials at the helm. So, who do ya'll have to be the first person to tweet/say something ignorant and then back pedal and say it was misunderstood, account hacked, etc.?

  28. Actually, when Mike Hill was promoted to President of Baseball Operations, Dan Jennings became the Marlins' official GM as Hill was the GM before him. Though essentially everyone's roles remained the same and titles were changed to seem more like promotions and I'd assume to increase pay. When Jennings departed here after the 2015 season Hill and the assistant GMs absorbed the GM duties because the structure of the Marlins baseball operations department didn't need one sole person in the GM position so they just carried on without hiring a replacement to be the GM. So officially the

  29. Hill had that title, how much he could preform in it was probably circumstantial depending on the situation, specially with Jeter, who didn't make that hire. Ng should be respected with more liberties because she was personally hired by Jeter and has a nice track record to back it up. Hopefully Jeter keeps the gloves off and lets her be accountable to the title of her employment.

  31. this hiring in conjunction with the Dolphins also having the NFL's only black GM/Coach duo is a nice thing for S. Florida sports - no coincidence that both those teams are trending upward either. Good for them and awesome for MLB and all sports in general!

  33. I think it’s outside the box because she wasn’t associated with the team and not rumored to be a candidate (though to be fair, I didn’t see but one person - that Raad guy already with the team). she’s been a GM candidate for a long time now, I always remember reading her name pop up when openings come up.
