I'd like to see it done in character .... maybe have a storyline lead up where he gets to do some talking/promos where he talks about the end being near, talk to the fans a bit and pretty much give his retirement speech over a number of weeks
then bring out a casket match - during the match have the "electricity" get all static and breaking up, then cue up a video of paul bearer calling him back to the otherside ...... he starts to roll his eyes back, pyroflash, arena goes dark, opponent is laid out in the center of the ring and taker and the casket are gone
probably too cheesy for most, but something along that lines would make me happy and tie back into when he started up and there was a little more gimmick going on

another trash bag taken to the dump..........

That's a really good panel ..... Rovell can be a little snarky, but really knows his stuff and all of them aren't exactly kids gloves kind of guys .... hopefully it's replayed or archived

yikes ... I grabbed the 2nd to last six pack off the shelf at total wine
there were a couple good beer stores by the hotel ..... I didn't wander over as we had an open bar with some good options pretty much every night and on work trips it's hard to really do much for yourself .... although one of my bosses from a different office did make his way over and grab a couple IPAs to have in the courtyard before heading out to dinner that night
definitely too far to make it to the actual brewery .... but distribution radius is better than getting about anything into Phoenix (although it's getting a lot better and the beer scene has improved greatly since I moved here almost 10 years ago and the most exotic tap you'd find in most locations was amber bock) ..... we now have a growler law where bars and other licensed establishments that have taps can sell growlers - which used to be reserved just for the breweries - still pretty new, but a couple places have embraced it .... also the local breweries are definitely growing which is great and with BevMo and now total wine coming full speed into the state to compliment AJs (upscale grocery), WorldMarket and a couple specialty shops the selection is much improved .......... still not the easiest state to distribute into though (which I doubt is in any small part to Cindy McCain holding the largest AB distributor and a massive company)

I was messing around and reading this thread coming back from Napa, CA ... unfortunately I was at the airport and not able to go and run for some of the Russian River beers .... it had been well over a year since i had checked into this thread
however, you guys did put hopslam onto my radar and noted it was at total wine ..... justified the $20 six-pack to my wife noting that it would last longer than the $20 bottle of wine also in my cart and got to work .... really enjoyed it

I agree with a previous poster that this could be a lost in translation issue .... the whole tone of that interview is very defensive and Loria doesn't exactly build a bridge of credibility when he starts out with these type of quotes
(Your reaction to the negative feedback?)
I haven’t seen anything. I got a few silly phone calls. That was in November. It stopped. I’m hoping maybe we can just call a halt to it all and try and get behind the home team this next year.
You haven't seen anything - it's stopped ... yet you are now on a publicity stump, running full page ads and stating that you are "hoping maybe can just call a halt ot it all" .... call a halt to what ... after all "I haven't seen anything ... It stopped"
He also lives in this fantasy land where this is his lense
“probably approached by 20 or 30 people all of whom congratulated me and said, ‘You had to do what you did.’ To a person.
even from Lorias account they were at a dinner together .... of course even then Loria has to mention that Reyes was at a fundraiser dinner that Loria invited him to. That he sat 2 seats away. That he showed up late. Loria then admits by his own words that they were having a conversation.
Reyes says he's going to Dubai. Loria asks him if his wife has been down to Miami. Reyes responds that she has been down to look for a home. Loria says he didn't say anything after that.
Why would he ask him about his wife coming to Miami and not talk about his Dubai trip?! After Reyes says that his wife is looking for a home does he just get up and leave? Order another round of wine and scream at someone at the table to create a diversion? Inquire about the pitbull laws in Ontario? Why even put yourself in that situation with a guy you are looking to move?
Remember, Reyes never said that it was unsolicited encouragement. Just that he had been encouraged to buy a house and it was mentioned 2 days before he was traded.
They could have been at this dinner and in an effort to not to be too akward the conversation could have been like this:
Loria: "Has your wife been to Florida"
Reyes: "Yeah, she's down there looking at houses. I think we may finally take your advice and get a home for the season. We're looking at X, Y or Z locations"
Loria: "Well you definitely can't go wrong with any of those. You looking at closing or acting anytime soon?"
Reyes: "Nope - just looking at the time but would like to be settled before the season - maybe i'll swing down after coming back from Dubai"
Loria: "Well best of luck"
Loria admits the topic was brought up - I just don't buy for a minute that there was no dialogue around it. He could have stopped short of telling Reyes to buy a house, but I doubt he said nothing or told him he should hold off because he's about to be dealt ... that would be akward and out of place.
More realistically is he kept the conversation superficial and then circled back with his agent/manager after the event. Which would fit with both of their viewpoints.

Exactly.
Sometimes expectations can weigh on players. Sometimes the game management can become tight. Then when things start to spiral everyone just starts gripping a little bit more. Maybe playing hard isn't the right term, maybe playing loose and just going for it. Although, there are definitely teams that as the season grinds down they're just looking to end the grind and get onto next year and those teams are awful to watch.
I'd love to see a team coming out with a chip on their shoulder, playing loose, playing fast and playing hard every moment ... giving no relief to their opposition either in victory or a loss.
Probably the best similarity I can come up with that makes sense to me is in combat sports (boxing, MMA, etc) ..... there are times when fighters get caught in the grind, even talented ones, they have a lot to lose, maybe respect their opponent too much and are out there trying to not get caught and look for an opening .... while you can appreciate the technical skill and their ability to not take damage it's usually less entertaining as a fan than watching a couple less skilled guys who dedide to just go for it and lay it all out on the line ....... Oscar De La Hoya / Floyd Mayweather fell flat despite the hype, promotion, excellent 24/7 series leading up to it and the incredible talent of the fighters .... meanwhile I could watch any ward/gatti fight at anytime

I think it's goofy because it's not like loria is hanging out at a food truck festival or a beer week celebration that the general public is hanging out at
In fact, it sounds like this one is the winner

This is the event his wife was connected with at the ballpark - $225 a person to attend
http://www.sobefest.com/diamond
Now out of that group how many people do you think actually have enough access to Loria? How many of them are going to a fundraiser at the ballpark, hosted in part by his wife to tell him that they think he's awful? There are plenty of other events to go spend your money on if you don't like the Lorias and if you have strong feelings against them I'm guessing that's exactly what you would do.
Also, did Jeffrey ask the follow up question? - You like the moves we made, great! - Here we are in our lovely ballpark, let's break out that checkbook right now and we can go do a select a seat for a ticket package, suite rental, etc.

well if he is still here after 2015 under this contract going into 2016 then the question goes beyond if loria wants him .... that dynamic is a lot different .... at that point he's a year away from free agency .... if he makes it through the season he has a full option of paydays to choose from .... if he wanted to stay with marlins how long would he do it for? .... would you trust loria enough to sign a 5 year deal going into 2016? .... I'm not sure I would - I definitely wouldn't do it without some sort of no trade clause
with the contract structure today Loria has the leverage ..... the opposite side of that coin is that by the start of the 2016 season the leverage would start to move towards Stanton and I'm not sure how happy he'd be at that point playing out his entire low value years and then going through the arbitration process
-
My enthusiasm for the marlins has definitely diminished .... a complete turn from last year ... however, after a few months step back I'm on board as spring training rolls around ..... i even bought a hat with the new logo on it this month (and i've never been enthusiastic about the new logo)
My enthusiams for baseball? - unchanged .... if anything, it's getting stronger .... the marlins aren't baseball .... with spring training under way, the opportunity to go to another WBC game and my daughter starting to get into the game it's great .... we had a little bat & tee set and she took to it immediately and love standing in the back yard hitting and chasing .... so I bought her a glove and ball and she loves to throw and dive after the ball with her glove (actually catching a little bit, but it's tough - hey she's only 3) .... we found a place that does 3-4 year old t-ball so that is starting up in April and last weekend I had a daddy/daughter night at an ASU softball game and she had a blast .... afterwards we were able to go out on a side field where she was throwing the ball into a net for about 20 minutes running around having fun
The marlins can't kill baseball for me ..... they can't take away all the good memories they've provided ... they can't take away the time spent playing it growing up (even though I was completely awful at the game) ... they can't take away the feeling from watching the game .... they can't take away the fun of simply tossing a ball around or even this christmas when my daughter was using a wrapping paper roll to smack superballs out of the air in the living room
I'll still try to watch as many marlins games as I can .... I don't expect them to be a winning team, but I hope they are competative, I hope they are fun and I hope they are a likeable group .... I've seen a lot of bad teams on the teams I follow - the seasons where they underperform and no one seems to care are always the worst .... seasons where they are good with the fans, play hard, play right and just come up short can actually be enjoyable
-
I think if a reasonable contract is presented he'd sign it .... I think his long term future is in doubt though ... sounds like Loria is getting the last year on the cheap and not loading any contract restraints into a potential trade .... after this season he'll start to get a little more expensive
As a player if you are under club control, you're under club control ... not much you can do .... so do you sacrifice a year or two of free agency and the uncertainty of the arbitration process to get a guaranteed dollar amount and the long term financial security? I would.
In fact, I'd be upset that I wasn't getting a raise going into this year.
He's a young guy. The whole play for a winner or grabbing max dollars at this point in time doesn't really resonate as much. This isn't a lifetime contract and he's already under club control. If the marlins offered a good 5 year deal next offseason, he would still be a free agent in his prime and in position to sign one of those crazy 10 year contracts that will guarantee him getting paid until he's almost 40. If the marlins aren't winning by 2018 there is a good chance he'd get moved at that point as it is to a contender
-
that # sounds about right ... may go over if they can stay healthy and get some jump from the young guys as the season grinds on and finish strong by beating other teams that are also out of it in september
I just have trouble seeing a team doing that much better than what they did to end last season .... obviously I hope I'm wrong and they go all Oakland A's for us and provide a gritty, likeable, winning team that is a joy to watch .... just really hard to see it right now
-
exactly and it's a cycle that just keeps spinning
there was no band aid approach to the marketplace - however, this ownership seems completely tone deaf to their surroundings .... even now talking about great support at a food & wine function of people coming up to Loria .... Jeff - the people approaching you at a food & wine function aren't exactly a great sample of who you need to sell your product to and using their words to prop your position is confirmation bias in the most extreme
if they estimated 30,000 bodies in that building on average then they were nuts ... that simply wasn't going to happen ... it could happen over time, but I believe this group has pretty much killed that possibility ... I think with a competative team and a measured approach they could have had 2M bodies go into that building last year
i thnk he's starting to realize how big the chasm is between the team and community and he's being aggressive in defending the team position .... which honestly, comes off really poorly and probably isn't helping anything at this point in time ... if anything, it's just making things worse by giving another opportunity for the media to lay into him ... it's not like they have sterling coverage to begin with (palm beach post still has a poll on their main page about if the marlins should trade josh johnson if they get a good offer this offseason)
At this point I'm not sure if this thing can be reconciled .... the team is going to be lousy for a while .... I know we as fans want to be surprised and the plucky underdog can sell .... but realistically this team is running towards astros territory .... even if they do become good, there is zero trust that they will stay good ... it's very hard to get invested and make this team worth your time
I'm really not sure what could be done at this point to regain public trust and start moving forward in a positive direction .... obviously taking care of Stanton would be a good first step to many of us

Way to grave dig this thread PHX. Lol.
Heh .... I didn't want to dedicate a thread just to this, but found the reaction interesting and along lines with some of the more outspoken commentary from Buehrle
Also a nice contrast as we enter this spring training to the mood entering spring training last year
Was kind of depressing searching for this thread - so many enthusiastic and excited posts about the offseason
Reyes speaks out against Loria in responding to the press .... if Loria was telling him to buy a house 2 days before trading him, that's pretty messed up
Seems in good spirits and ready to go .... I liked having him on the team and he spoke nicely of the fans, which is nice .... a lot of ex-players feel obliged to take shots at everyone on their way out
Loria was just telling him to do what other rich people from Canada do. Buy a house in South FL.Heh .... throw in that he currently has a house in NY, has summer employment in Canada it's a natural fit to pick up a residence in FL

The TX sluggers don't light it up with OBP - so you can definitely be a top level player, even if your OBP lags a bit compared to other elite sluggers
However, it would be nice to see him get some bump in this regard .... it would move him from the exciting young power hitter to simply one of top hitters in the game - he'd give a rounded and dangerous approach at the plate like miggy, braun, bautista on his tear, etc
Although if he's a clean and healthy Josh Hamilton at the plate for the bulk of his career it's definitely not hurting your lineup
-
I want them to do well, surprise and be fun ..... I just don't see it .......... I see around 60 wins ......... if a couple guys get their callups and produce I could see that number swelling to the 65-70 mark
If they were able to keep everything humming all season long then maybe 80 ......... but I just don't see that happening, guys go through slumps, guys get hurt and this team lacks in depth, experience, etc.
I think we are in for a very long year - maybe even longer than '98

the whole concept doesn't make me happy - however, if there is talk about trade packages, should probably mention the one that is rumored to be what AZ agreed to before Upton invoked his no trade clause
Apparently this is the base of the deal:
One of Walker/Hultzen/Paxton
Nick Franklin
Charlie Furbush
Stephen Pryor
With Seattle looking for power and an outfielder they would have a natural interest in Stanton - especially when you consider his financial impact
Given his salary, years of club control and my opinion that he's simply a better prospect than justin upton I would expect more in return than that .... however, with that as the framework is there a deal with Seattle that anyone would take?
-
marketing people still have jobs to do, I guess
i even got a call today from a rep with the phoenix coyotes - left a messaging stating that they wanted to stay in touch through the lockout and discuss any games I'd want to attend once the puck drops
this from a team with no owner, for a league with no season
cross a couple bridges and then call
-
Well I'm moving out to the desert in a few weeks so I guess I will get to see Mr. Ross again. Hopefully I'll also get to see some of that hot meltdown Heath Bell action too.
Welcome to AZ - you'll be here in time for spring training, which is a great time .... maybe even the golf tournament (think waste management is the sponsor now - it's a pretty crazy scene
Although not a great sports town, it's a great town to be a sports fan
-
some interesting news as well as public logo designs here - apparently there were 5 names trademarked - pelicans, rougarou, mosquitos, swamp dogs and bull sharks
-
New Orleans Jazz would make complete sense, though.
Ah well.
yes, yes it would

I don't know - at first it started off sounding like the Marlins were being unreasonable and wouldn't change seats
However, from the marlins statement it sounds like they are more than willing to move them to a different seat and that the ticket holders are pretty much saying they want their seats but the advertising gone
The pictures are a bit dubious as well as far as seeing any real impact from the foam to the vision
If it's really about view and safety, I'm not sure why you would throw this quote in there
"I have no intention of renewing," Leon says. "They're a Double A team now. It went down the toilet when they sold off all the players."
To me it sounds like they bought great seats with the excitement and were blindsided and pissed first when the ticket marketplace dried up and they had to unload half their tickets at a presumable loss and then with the further dismantling of the team
Really, who would want to pay over $12k a seat to go watch 40 games a year of this club .... it just sounds like they are manufacturing a reason to get completely out
