  1. I'm having a hard time believing that even the media or casual fan would be upset with Michael Hill being fired. I can't think of a single positive trade he's done or a free agent signing that's worked out well for us in the last several years. Not a single person would come to his defense... honestly if they did I feel like it would be out of pity or to be like OK everyone relax he wasn't THAT bad. But yea, he truly was. Only excuse is that he is indeed a puppet, was before for Loria and Beinfest and continues to be now with Jeter / Denbo. I could see negative media/comments if we fired Mattingly though.

We aren't going to compete in the next 2 years so it doesn't really matter where we trade him to. If anything he'll help the Phillies beat us more often to guarantee us that worse record to get better picks.

And then in two years when he's a FA and we hopefully begin sniffing progress, who knows where he'll end up. So we did absolutely the right thing in getting the best return possible and not worrying about divisions or where he went.

  3. Lol, but really, where are the formatting tools for that?  I'm not seeing them anywhere, I just see Bold/Italic/Underline and the usual quote buttons.

Are you on your phone or high? lol Because if you just hit reply on your computer all the quotes, alignment, font size and color, bold, italics, underline... it's all there right on top of the gray sqaure.

  4. I think it's fair to say that if we're demanding Sixto from Phillies, still means our price is high no matter who we talk to and we can forget a trade centered around India with lesser parts and Barnhart from Reds. Which is what we hoped was the case. Seems like this might get to ST.

    That's it.

    Bye everyone.

    You spelled 'buy' wrong.

  5. The only problem with your scenario is that we lack the players and depth for things to suddenly start getting better in the next 1-2 years and then we'd have to commit big bucks to a player going into his age 30 season. Do you really want to hand Realmuto a 5 year 100M type deal in 2020-2021 with him in his 30's?

To me, even though the return wasn't great on Ozuna, it was necessary. Stanton was actually a solid trade considering how teams are being more financially responsible. But to me, you either keep Realmuto and Yelich in their primes and build around them so by the time they're at the end of their deals hopefully we have some propsects and new FA signings to compete. Or you trade both of them. You can't half-ass this. Look at how deep and good the teams are in the playoffs, we're sooooo soooo far away from that.

  6. Roto:  Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com is hearing that the Marlins and Reds are still negotiating a possible J.T. Realmuto trade.

Mayo's sources indicate that a package is coalescing around catcher Tucker Barnhart, prospect infielder Jonathan India and one or more lesser prospects heading to the Marlins. Every day generates new rumors about Realmuto's possible destination but this is one of the more specific scenarios we have seen. Sources indicate the Reds have taken their top three prospects off the table (3B/2B Nick Senzel, OF Taylor Trammell and RHP Hunter Greene). India was the fifth overall selection in last year's Draft. He makes a natural trade candidate because he is blocked in Cincinnati by Eugenio Suarez at third base and at second base by Scooter Gennett and Senzel. The Marlins have been shopping Realmuto for years and are currently negotiating with the Padres in addition to the Reds. The Dodgers and Braves are among some other teams that are interested as well.

Yikes... So basically India, a mediocre/solid-ish catcher and some lesser prospects? It can't be. If the Reds give up 1 prospect from their top 10 and it's not one of those 3, this trade will go down just like the Yelich one. If India is the best player in the deal there better be multiple prospects in the 5-15  range from their farm coming along with him. If by lesser, they mean just lower than India (who's ranked 4th), that's fine. Tony Santillan and Mike Siani. But if they mean lesser meaning 15-25 range... that's super lame. I still don't understand why we'd give value for Barnhart. I know having a solid defensive catcher is important for pitcher development but this is not the way to go about it.

  7. Padres are now linked to Gio Gonzalez as well. They could take advantage of this buyers market and swoop in and make a slew of moves and get into the postseason talk real quick.

Looking like they could add Machado or Harper along with Gio and JT. Think it gets done this weekend. Someone needs to blink... right?...

  8. Agreed. However, I'm wondering how much of the delays have to do with Mike Hill still being the guy in negotiations when teams are used to him being a part of so many bad trades under the previous ownership, so they think they can wait him out like they've done in the past? However, the snag this time is that Jeter and Co. (Gary Denbo, etc.) are not budging and are not willing to sign off on anything that has been offered so far.

Maybe the Marlins get what they want faster if they remove Hill from the negotiations, so it's clear to these other teams that there are no dimwits in the room that will fold?

This thing has gotten ridiculous, and the only thing I can figure is teams think they can get a steal again from Hill, but this time the guy with the rubber stamp (Jeter with Denbo and the rest of the team's advisement) isn't signing off. In the past, this trade would've been done for far less return with Hill and the previous front office and ownership regime.

pretty sure Jeter and Denbo were around when we got fleeced in that Yelich deal. So... not sure this is all on Hill.

  9. Someone previously had mentioned that maybe if the Padres got JT, it would be more likely that Machado or Harper would want to sign with them. I'm not sure that's exactly the domino effect. I think the Padres are looking at this as more of a package deal. If one shoes drop they'll be aggressive and complete the acquisitions.

So as of right now, talks are in intensified stages for Realmuto with the Padres. And they just so happen to be meeting with Harper in Vegas later today or tomorrow. Padres are finding out exactly how much it would take to sign either Machado or Harper and what it would take to get Realmuto and then they'll decide if they pull the trigger and make a splash and get JT plus one of those two. If not I don't think they get any of them.

  10. The only negative from having so many teams interested, is that our top guys that will decide on it, have to focus on one deal at a time and can't be having serious negotiations with multiple teams at the same time. It's a process, teams probably have time slots or appointments and hence it's taking so long. And also since there are so many teams involved Marlins continuously will wait to see if the other team will beat it.

Really wish this would resolve itself soon however. And I can't help but think that teams just don't take us seriously because we're the Marlins and the optics of giving the Marlins a top 20-30 prospect for a guy that isn't a household name could blow up in their faces if JT somehow gets hurt or if the top prospect we get in return turns into a star a Stanton or Jose Fernandez type player for us.

Or maybe the Marlins are butt-hurt after the Yelich deal and really are asking for an insane amount, like Trammel, India, another top 7-15 pitcher and OF and barnhart. Who knows really. Really hoping for a deal this week. Gotta feel like teams are tired of this, just like they are of Machado and Harper.

  11. Barnhardt is a far superior defender.

Its about cost per dollar spent basically.  Do you allocate your dollars elsewhere within your budget?  Basically is the added offensive numbers worth the far superior long term price tag, primarily in any possible extension signed, you figure 8 mil or so arby next year and then who knows what after.

Barnhardt is at 4 mil AAV.  So its really down to dollars and cents.  lol

Far superior defensively? JT is the best all around catcher for a reason.

    1) Statcast the past four years has proven he's the fastest, as he led that category the past 4 seasons.

    2) JT has the best pop time in the league because he has the 3rd strongest arm and the 3rd fastest exchange rate.

    3) Those things allow JT to have one of the best caught stealing percentages in the league

    4) JT has improved his power every year and he's been hitting the ball better every year.

    5) JT's last 4 years Def rating according to fangraphs - 8.8 / 10.3 / 12.6 / 7.9 = 9.9 AVG meanwhile Barnhart 5.9 / 11 / 14.9 / 5.5 = 9.325 AVG

So yeah, not only is JT, FAR superior with the bat, he's actually faster, stronger arm, better pop time, better defensively and he's better at framing (he's average at it but Barnhart is awful at it)

Since I took you to school, here are my sources. The MLB article is by far the most interesting.

And last by not least, you don't get better and build for the future by trading away the best catcher in baseball and letting the team get value out of an OK 28 year old catcher who isn't getting better and won't be part of this team long-term. "hey we can rebuild and compete at the same time guys" - Adam Gase

  12. The Marlins are being defensive. They probably know the teams JT would want to go to and they definitely know more or less what he's looking for in an extension - both years and annual amount. By denying all teams a chance to negotiate you keep the playing field even. If you let someone negotiate with him and his demands are too high, the team might balk. And then leak how much JT actually wants which could turn off some F.O. peeps from other teams. If he had only 1 year left, I'd get it. But it's two years. Only the Padres are asking for this window because they're cheap. (not that a Marlins fan should be able to call any other team cheap but...) The Dodgers and Astros and whoever else can trade for him and then wait 6-12 months and resign him after he likes the city and the team etc. I don't like everything the Marlins have done but this makes sense to me. It's two years. Take it or leave it. Fuck off if it's not good enough for you. I don't blame the Padres at all for asking, they're trying to be resourceful and beating around the bush with Manny also. Maybe if they land one they'll be more willing to go for the other also and keep that WS window open for as long as possible. I also don't blame the Marlins for their stance. They aren't budging on their asking price, on negotiating windows, on anything. They're showing resolve and dare I say it competence. I'm cool with it.

  13. That’s because Manny Machado’s agent said that. He disputed the reports of 7/175. He has a reason to dispute it though so I am not sure I believe him.

Weren't there other sources that also backed up that claim and said that Olney's numbers were too low? Call me crazy but if the best offer for Manny was 7 yrs for 175M, maybe the Marlins wouldn't jump in but I'm pretty sure other teams would've. Which is why I agree with the agent and other sources.

I don't follow this very closely, just sorta close. Like how close I keep track of my ex after that restraining order. Because I feel Manny and Bryce are holding back the JT market a little. Teams feel really hesitant to take the plunge this offseason.

  14. I can't help but feel that you looked that up to fact check it and sound smug. There's no way that someone just knows that off the top of their head (locations and closing dates). Starting to understand the general sentiment toward you in this forum. #FOMO

  15. Reports came out denying it and that the offer starts with a 2 which means 200 million +

Seems like they aren't budging on the years (which it's about damn time, signing these players to decade long guaranteed contracts is beyond stupid, soooo many unknowns) but the money is supposedly 7 yrs 210M or so.

  16. I was about to say Curtis Granderson or LoMo (nostalgia bonus) would be solid signings.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that Curtis Granderson fully intends to continue his playing career in 2019.

There have been some whispers about retirement over the past couple of years, but Granderson isn't ready to walk away just yet. However, like many free agents around the game, he's still waiting for the right offer. Granderson turns 38 in March and batted .241/.351/.431 with 13 home runs over 403 plate appearances between the Blue Jays and Brewers in 2018. He could make for a useful left-handed bat for someone, most likely in a bench role.

  17. So wait, according to Dan O'Dawd the Astros have actually offered us Tucker and Bukauskas? Isn't that what we were hoping for? Are we waiting for someone to top that?

Braves are talking to AJ Pollock and seem poised to sign him to a 5yr / 80M deal. Maybe we're hoping the Braves cough up Acuna for him and they replace Acuna with Pollock? Maybe Marlins actually send something back along with JT for him? Some interesting scenarios. But I thought that if the Marlins got offered Tucker plus a solid pitcher like Bukauskas it would've been accepted.
