  1. Okay. Whatever you say. You are far too smart for me.
  2. "Signability" has always factored in the Marlin's drafting policy, this has been stated openly...this equals $$$$$$$$$ any way you look at it I can see and partially agree with the point you are making. But to know for sure what has been going on we would have to know if the Marlins talked to those other players, what positions they played, and if the Marlins were looking for those positions. Also if those players had the same agent or if their agents were talking with each other comparing notes. Too many what if's to just come out and state as fact they refuse to give large signing bonuses. Wouldn't surprise if it's true, just no real evidence to support stating it as fact and trying to back up that statement. Seems to me our #1 draft pick usually comes down to the wire before actually signing. Not sure if that's a fact or not, just seems like it to me.
  3. If that isn't bait, I don't know what is! LOL The part of the quote that was deleted out was funnier.
  4. I wonder how much better Beinfest's drafting record would have been if Loria didn't pinch pennies on signing bonuses. I'm not so sure that has much to do with it. Maybe a little in predraft conversations with players. No way to really tell unless someone has inside info on those talks. All else is just speculation and rumour starting. You draft players, then offer them contracts that they either accept or not. Are there any of our 1st round picks that didn't sign by the deadline? That would at least be a hint.
  5. disagree: Yonder Alonso was very highly touted and picked right after Skipworth. I don't remember the buzz about the others but most of those guys were either 1st rounders or supplemental picks. Not saying I would have known who to pick beforehand, but I'm not getting paid to scout these guys. Also, I was rebutting Future's claim that "it's not like we missed much that was picked after him." Clearly, we missed a lot of players picked after Skipworth. To be fair, from what I remember, Skipworth was also very highly touted. Just hasn't panned out yet. Maybe he never will, maybe he's just a late bloomer/slow learner. Right now the best I can say about him is that he is following his dream, and there is nothing wrong with that.
  6. LOL Thanks, man. But, back to what LOL Thanks, man. But it will most likely be ignored, or somehow changed so they aren't wrong. Whatever. But back to what "..." and I were originally discussing........ I think it's more that I take exception to the way terms like "stupid" and "ignorant" (among others) are used. A little too freely, IMO. And I don't think having a degree in something makes that person more intelligent than another person. More informed on one topic, but not more intelligent by any means.
  7. As for Kobe beef, all advertising of it before 2010 was totally bogus, it couldn't be imported. At all. Period. No matter what. Since then, imports are possible, but are minimal and most $350 "Kobe" steaks are still mostly bogus since anyone in the US can call anything they want "Kobe" beef, Japanese trademark protections don't apply here. "Wagyu" beef is even worse when it comes to outright fraud in labeling in restaurants and supermarkets. But, Bob is right. If it had been me, I would have stayed for the actual Kobe beef. Off topic, but so what. Agree. They have "Kobe beef" farms here. One in Okeechobee, I think. Can't see how that's possible. Could be the same type cattle, but...... They feeding them the same Japanese beer? They getting the massages? I rather doubt it. To be honest, I've never tried Kobe anything in the states because I don't believe it could be the same thing. Why ruin such a good memory? And I've never heard of Wagyu. Guess I missed something.
  8. Why would you sign a lefty starter when you have Flynn and Hand who are both ML ready...to spend more money? I guess that is the Marlin way! According to the official web site, they aren't looking for another starter. They are looking for a veteran reliever for the pen.
  9. Penguino is right, as was mysticol who originally pointed out the misquote, which was really multiple misquotes. But, that's OK, none of this really matters. I'll take Jack anytime. A man with a plan to succeed. He knew what he needed to do and he did it whether the FO agreed or not. That's something that only someone with decades in the biz can carry off. Hell, he'd already been a GM. Trader Jack. Traded his own son-in-law. Why would he care what anybody thought? Don't like it? FU. Fire me. And that's the end of that discussion. Something that I don't see in Redmond's make-up, at least so far. Maybe 20 years from now, should he ever accomplish anything. And to Jack's great credit, he could mangle a name at least as well as Casey or Yogi could. All true enough. And I think you just agreed with me.
  10. You sure are wrong about a lot of things, aren't you? Not really. It's just that I'm not allergic to admitting when I am. Kind fo a foreign thing to some well educated individuals around here.
  11. I read somewhere that McGhee was making more than $1.1m in Japan last year and was due to make $2m this year if he stayed. Definitely seems like dude has something to prove, FWIW. Or he really hates sushi. I would stay for the Kobe steak. Expensive, but far cheaper than here.
  12. Actually, they were. You misquoted ...'s post. Had to go back and look. Yep, you're right, I did misquote. Guess the morning coffee hadn't taken over yet. But seems like everyone but one poster knew what was going on.
  13. You never hear the latter two terms combined in that fashion in the scientific and engineering community. Especially "theoretical analyst," which sounds like you were just throwing random shit together. Can't figure out what a well educated individual is missing here. They weren't my terms. Seems pretty simple to me.
  14. To follow your train of thought.....You do know Trader Jack isn't/wasn't a rocket scientist, statistical engineer, or theoretical analyst, don't ya? (Matter of fact, I don't think anyone here is either.) That's awfully presumptuous. Is it? If anyone here is truthfully one of these, speak up. Well, two of your three categories don't really exist, but I'm well educated. They weren't my categories. Guess I should have put quotation marks around them so I didn't confuse the "well educated" group.
  15. The main problem with this FO is that every time there is a dissenting voice in the organization, they end up getting fired. It's blatantly obvious that if you don't agree with whatever Loria thinks, you won't be employed long. Exactly. Owners have the right to run their teams any way they want. But I believe the most succesful ones are the owners that let the people they hire actually do their jobs instead of questioning and/or over riding day to day operations. That's not Loria.
  16. I think Loria has been a meddler since the day that Joe Girardi almost got fired for telling him to be quiet (when he was yelling at the umpire). He reminded Girardi of who signed his pay check and that he prepared to fire him after that game before getting talked out of it. Telling Redmond who to start in each game of a double header just proved that he hasn't changed. If he tried that kind of stuff with Jack McKeon, the old dude would have told him to jump in the ocean. Yea, he probably would have. He didn't need the job and could have cared in the least if he got the axe.

  18. New owners have to be approved by the rest of the owners, and they've been pretty against him. There are reports he was the actual high bidder for the Rangers, but MLB changed the bidding rules at the end of the game and the current owners won instead. That's now. Good old boys die, retire, and change. I think he will eventually own a team. Sure they do. And they hand the reigns over to other "good ole boys" that are approved by the "good ole boys" that still own teams. It's not like they are all going to die, retire, and/or change at the same time. I think it would be good for baseball for him to own a team. I just doubt it happens. One of those times I really hope I am wrong.
  19. Considering how much money the Dodgers ownership is throwing around, it would be hypocritical at this point to not allow Cuban to own a team. Believe it or not, $$$ has nothing to do with it. His attitude, outspoken-ness, etc, has every thing to do with it.
  20. Of course Red is handing out the FO mantra. But, some of what he says IS stupid, the rest is conventional wisdom. It's what most of them do, for whatever reason -- ignorance, stupidity, keeping their head down, outright sucking-up to the FO, etc. Here, let me rephrase it. Most players, coaches and managers are less able to articulate, or for that matter even form an opinion based on facts than most of the posters on this board. Then there's the not-small matter of actually being able to make a coherent argument. It just ain't in their DNA or their education. Playing ball is. They're jocks and ex-jocks, not rocket scientists or statistical analysts or theoretical logicians. Trying to decipher or critique whatever a bunch of cliche-reliant doofuses burp up is a waste of time, they'll say something different two days later. As for Red, he's just another miscellaneous manager. They come and they go. I'd rather have Jack. A guy who once actually had an intelligent, well considered plan of attack to win. That worked. Not to mention his ability to say things in Stengelese terms. Of course Red is handing out the FO mantra. But, some of what he says IS stupid, the rest is conventional wisdom. (Matter of fact, I don't think anyone here is either.) Jack is an ex-jock that couldn't make it in the sport of his choice and went into coaching instead. And then comparing him to Stengel, didn't you actually call him stupid in a previous post? We're actually not far off from agreeing. Except you are calling them stupid and I am saying they are just following what the FO wants them to say so they can keep their jobs. Plus, work with what you have and not what you wish you had. Saying differently gets you fired in Miami. It may make one feel better to say I was right and they were wrong, but the bottom line is that you are still fired. In Red's case, one year coaching/managing at this level isn't that great on his resume.
  21. Loria keeping payroll low in order to sell the team for max value when his penalty drops. One can only hope that it's bought by a pencil-pushing nerd that likes advanced stats. Or NOT!! How about someone the genuinely loves baseball and is willing to spend money on it. Mark Cuban? One only dream! no way he comes to the same city as Micky! Cuban would kill to own any MLB team. Anytime there's a team for sale, he's in on them. I would love to have Cuban here. Can't argue that. But it seems MLB dosen't want him anywhere.
  22. Actually, I take it back. Maybe Hill is telling Redmond what to think after all: "We obviously know about his splits," Hill said. "I know, in a platoon situation, where he doesn't get 500 at-bats, he's struggled more in being consistent. But in years when he's been able to get more than 500 at-bats, we feel like the splits are a little more even." What a dummy. Doubt it. Just another yes man trying to say the "right" things so the general public won't get turned off on the team before ST even starts. Find where the ones that made waves are now.
  23. Well, no, it's not a matter of having an outlook of "everyone is stupid except me." It's a matter of a bunch of ex-jocks (as in coaches and managers) running their mouths with nothing backing it up, so they say the first thing that comes to mind that they think will sound good. Just like they did when they were players. The press, desperate to have something to write about demand that they say something. So they do. It's a constant. They burp up garbage and cliches for fan consumption. Totally meaningless. Trying to devine some deep meaning from their comments is the height of silliness. The idea of Redmond caring about his marketability is nothing but a straw-man. I never claimed any such thing. So you don't think Red is just repeating the FO mantra and is trying to make the best of the situation handed to him? And apparently you think players, coaches, and managers are stupid, but don't have the attitude that "everyone is stupid but me?" Hmmm. Okay. Not sticking up for anyone here. I didn't much care for the Red hiring in the first place. (Remember my "Here's another cookie, Red" comments? ) I prefer a manager that will think for himself and not just puke out what the FO wants him to. But in Miami, if you have a different opinion than the FO (owner) you get fired. A manager that has one year of managing/coaching experience at the MLB level has to cover his butt. He's not going to come out and say, "We still need this, this, and this or we are not going to win." It's called job security.
  24. Yes, we're gonna sign a guy who won't even play for us cause he'll be suspended. If he's suspended with no real evidence, that's sad. And if he's cleared, I think the Yanks release him... and someone will sign him. Nobody has less to lose than the Marlins. His suspension may be reduced but there is nearly zero chance that it's wiped out completely. Agree. He's just pushing the powers that be far too hard right now.
  25. Then again, most of these guys just aren't all that smart and don't do much other than mouth the usual cliches. They almost all exhibit the incoherence of Casey Stengl or Yogi Berra without the unintentional humor. Most of what they say is meaningless. If you ask them the same question two days later, they'll say something else meaningless. Trying to devine some deep meaning from their idle chatter is a fool's errand. I suppose if one were to have the outloook on life that "everyone is stupid except me", that is a viable opinion. I just don't buy into it. The second part I can somewhat agree with. But that's just going along with the company mantra and not causing any waves. Causing waves gets you fired in Miami. Red has one year experience as an MLB manager/coach/anything. Think any team is chomping at the bits right now, just hoping he gets fired so they can gobble him up as their next manager?
