1. ESPN.com...... The Baltimore Orioles could have a new ace as soon as Friday night. ESPN's Peter Gammons reports that talks between the Marlins and Orioles for pitcher A.J. Burnett heated up Friday afternoon. According to a source, if the Orioles can move pitcher Sidney Ponson -- rumored to go through Texas, possibly to Tampa Bay -- Baltimore can use the money saved to make third baseman Mike Lowell's contract work. Lowell, who is batting a disappointing .230 with just four homers and 39 RBI, is owed about $21 million through 2007. The Marlins think a trade could happen Friday night, although it's not clear whether or not the Orioles will ask for a window to try to sign Burnett. The 28-year-old Burnett, who can become a free agent after the season, is 6-6 with a 3.68 ERA. 870494 TAMPA BAY!!! Since when could they afford to take on Mr. Crappy and his 10 million dollar price tag. This is way to hard to believe, Texas can do a hell of alot better then Ponson. They have the resources to go after a guy like Odalis Perez, Mark Redman or come straight at us for Burnett if they wanted. I find it way to hard that Texas is THAT desperate. And forget Tampa Bay thats quite literally impossible. 870507 Baltimore and/or Texas would be eating at least half of his salary probably more than that. 870509 But thats still alot of cash to hold onto if they take half, don't see how they'll gain the ability to take on a huge chunk of Lowell's contract. Maybe its me in denial that we actually do make this horrible one-sided trade.

3. If he goes there it means the end of the braves Dynasty 869830 Bobby Cox is still there, and so long as he holds the reigns I will never doubt the Braves. Half there team was injuried, and thats the good half mind you. Still manage to stick around in first.
4. Do we really want Jose Contras or however you spell it, the guy is real inconsistant, 51 walks in and 97 hits in only 114 innings ain't my idea of "solid". Sure he might do better down here course we would also end up with Leiters clone. I say take McCarthy, Marte, and Anderson and run with it. Vargas and Olsen I honestly believe can hold down the fort, these guys just don't seem to have any fear.
5. Can someone, and I promse this isn't a trap, pleae show me any kind of authorative source (not a messageboard post) that says, or even implies Junior wants to be traded? Everything I've read and heard is that he's comfortable in Cincy and wants to stay for the remainder of his career, but if I'm wrong, I'd like to know. Maybe I just missed somethng. 869089 He said he'd goto only a few teams and as far as I'm aware the Marlins aren't one of them. As said we don't have the money to make a gamble like that anyways. It would be like making a $20,000 bet with $18,000 worth of cash, if you don't win your gonna get your legs broken in half.
6. Thats a HUGE gamble on the Marilins part. With Griffey you don't know really what you will get. His contract makes Lowell's look like pennies so we would have to move ALL of Lowell's contract and then get the Reds to consume a little more then half just to break even with what we have now. If its the Griffey from the Mariner's, no problem what so ever. If it's the guy who would probrably get injuried on the plane ride down here NO, we don't have the financial power to do that.
7. In keeping up with the insanity... let's trade for Lance Berkman... :cool 868971 Ooo I like, then we can turn around and trade him and Lowell to the Yanks for A-Rod and Mariano.
8. Haha a miracle has happened, we seem to have been saved from one of the most lop-sided trades in recent memory.
9. 3 guys I think the Marlins should make a serious run at as far as OF goes. Dunn- Cost us an arm and a leg to get, got the most power of the three but K's way more then I really like. With him if the ball doesn't go 500 feet he isn't getting past first. Huff- He's crappy cause he misses Rocco, so let's give him Pierre, Castillo, Delgado, and Miguel. Pretty nice company right there and I always like this guys playing style. Raul Ibanez- Got the best stats of the three and might be the easiest to obtain. .293/12/50/.357/.460 Little older then the Marlins usually go for at 33 but still a solid guy. If anyone else has some ideas throw them out... 867584 Huff is a bad outfielder, and his #'s might not be as good here since he is a lefty. Add on to that he is expensive and an average outfielder at best, we can do better. 867619 Oh he's alot better then an average outfielder offensivly, and he sure can't be any worse then Miguel on defense. A .290 career hitter even with this horrible season this year. 3 previous years he's belted 23, 34, 29 homeruns and driven in over a hundred runs the past two seasons on that crappy TB team. I agree his numbers will dwindle down here and he is expensive, but if Lowell goes and we get Huff we're still 4 million below where we are now. It's a risk yes, but he comes cheaper then Dunn and in my opinion is alot more solid hitter. Course as said I'd still shoot for Ibanez over either of these two if we want to really win now.
10. Hey if he agrees to a long term deal I'm for it, thats option #1 for me. However I have a better chance of winning the lotto then that happening so he needs to go because we can get a hell of a package if Beinfeist is as cunning as we all pray he is.

12. 1. Trade Burnett to O's for Penn, Juilo, and Bigbie 2. Trade Bigbie to Pitt for Redman 3. Trade Lowell to Twins for prospects IF they agree to take his whole contract. If not void #4 and 6. 4. Use Penn + other Prospects to obtain either Dunn, Huff, or Ibanez. 5. Trade Enc and Johnson for another arm in pen 6. Move Miguel to third 7. Call up Hermida, put in left if Lowell is traded or right if he's not. 8. Let McKeon finish out season. I'm sure he'll retire at the end anyways.
13. If we have to pay $1 of Lowells contract to not include him in the deal, it's pointless because the vaule would jump ten fold without him in the deal as a throw in. And if this is the deal, Beinfiest better have a hell of alot of tricks up his sleeve because we have NO reason to throw in the towell just yet.
14. So whats the deal, what just happened. I feel lost.
15. I swear Beinfiest better have something up his sleeve or I'm gonna start a riot come August 1st.
16. If its the 3 way then I can see us going after a huge bat for a few reasons. 1. We got our replacement pitcher already in Redman. 2. We got a huge piece to throw out in Penn a couple more pieces as well. 3. We have a ton of space cleared for salary. 4. We got a bunch of semi decent relievers that we can sell off to teams dying for bullpen help. I don't know if we are really writing this season off or not, we'll know in August. But I have a feeling this will be the busiest July in Marlins history.
17. How many threads do you guys need? You should rename this site ADDMarlinsBaseball.com every 5 minutes someone posts ' AJ BURNETT MIGHT GET TRADED!!!' rumors guys, rumors... 861746 Can't really call them rumors anymore though. Not a matter of "if" anymore, but a matter of "when and where"
18. I know a lot of people haven't heard of him but I like FREDI GONZALEZ! He used to be our single A manager for the Brevard County Manatees and he was very good. Also, his ability to communicate with Spanish speaking players (ala Ozzie Guillen), would help us a lot. 1) Jim Leyland and 2) Fredi Gonzalez ---- Those are my 2 favorites in order! 861485 I agree, Leyland needs to be #1 and if he can't be obtained then get Gonzalez.. He won in '97 and in my opinion this team is better then the one in '97. Do the deal with the White Sox, bring in Leyland. Ladies and gentleman that NL East crown is still within reach but action needs to be taken now.
19. I honetly can't figure out why we would trade A.J. and Lowell for that sorry package. I understand Burnett has alot of leverage here but come on. We have 4 prospect pitchers who can be considered top level and then we just went and drafted 3 more pitchers in the first round, this is beyond a surplus espically if we get Penn. If this is the deal that gets done I hope Beinfiest turns around and does something just as big.
20. No doubt if Cashman wants any shot at coming away with Burnett, which I'm hoping he will because the Yanks ALWAYS over pay, a third team will have to get involved.
21. right now im hearing Burnett for Arroyo, Shoppach and Alvaraz. The Red Sox dont have much interest in Lowell. 859546 I don't know, Arroyo would be a nice pickup but the other two are nothing special at all and we don't need another catcher in Shoppach. I'd still take the White Sox or Jays deals.

Depends on whether or not you want to make the playoffs. I don't see Olsen and Vargas taking the Marlins there this season. 856386 Get a bullpen and get the offense moving we should be ok. But why would you all of a sudden be on the "trade A.J." bandwagon after 1 bad outing. I agree with what you said about hit pitching method but this is how he's always been.856388 But that certainly does not justify his not being able to improve from his mistakes. He looks like he is making the same mistakes every time he has an off night and believe it or not I am starting file him in my U file. U=uncoachable 856465 He makes the same mistakes when he has a great outing. But his stuff his just that filthy that he doesn't really need to perfect in location or mix his pitches up so much he confuses Einstien, that no hitter is a perfect example of it. And I agree he is uncoachable, kinda figured that out when he came off the DL. He's got that "My stuff is unhitable" mentality and it can kill him. He is stubborn and thickheaded and at times those can be good, but he's not acting those at good times. Honestly if healthy he has the stuff to be another Roger Clemens or Schilling, but he can not be those if he doesn't learn how to really "pitch". You can be great relying on your stuff, but he can be amazing if he learns to use it to its full effectivness.
23. I still want Lowell's defense at third and eventually he will turn his hitting around. I rather wait for him to turn it around then watch him do it in a Jays uniform. We all know Lowell will come back to himself eventually, and like I said lets have him here when he does. I don't think anyone knows that lowell will come back to his old form. Moreover, I don't think many THINK that he will come back to his old form. Also, about your earlier moves, how do we get out hands on Dunn? If we are trading AJ, Enc, and a prospect to Toronto, what do we have left over that can be sent over to Cincinatti for Dunn? He's still a pretty decent commodity that will require more than just a couple of low level prospects. 856400 We have a fairly thick farm and have quite a few prospects to wheel and deal plus that is all the Reds will really want, they are the biggest sellers this year I think and we should jump on it. A package of Vargas or Olsen/Willy/Johnson and maybe another lower quality pitcher like Chad Bentz or Ben Howard. I have a feeling alot of prospect pitchers may be traded which is why they took so many in the draft. As for Lowell, your right no one knows. It's just amazing how this is happening, I mean players slump and they can slump for a long time, I know been there done that. But this is insane, you cannot just lose it all of a sudden like that and never get it back. If he doesn't though, then I suppose the best solution would be bench him or cut him like we did Leiter and bring up Hermidia and move Cabs to 3rd. Honestly I think he will break out of it, and I'd love for him to be in teal when it happens cause it will be vicious.

Depends on whether or not you want to make the playoffs. I don't see Olsen and Vargas taking the Marlins there this season. 856386 Playoffs are dimming more and more everyday. The Nats and Braves just lost 3 straight games and we made up 0 ground. The time to trade Burnett is NOW as his trade value is declining a bit. Juan, Lowell, and AJ all need to go. 856449 I hope you mean Juan Enc becasue this team goes nowhere if we trade Pierre.
25. BABE Rankings for First Half of 2005: 1. Clemens .310 2. Martinez .322 3. Halladay .342 4. Buehrle .365 5. Harden .368 6. Patterson .370 7. Morris .371 8. Carpenter .375 9. Willis .376 10. Burnett .377 856451 Pretty good crew right there, promise you he ain't on that list after last night though.
