  1. Sad news about Alexis Arguello. One of the greatest fighters ever. His fight against Aaron Pryor in the old Orange Bowl was an epic, epic match. It was a true knock down drag out fight. Even though Arguello lost by moving up in weight class he was still pound for pound the best fighter of his era.
  2. Man City offers 30 million euros for Samuel Eto'o. If he goes could open the door for Villa or Ibrahimovic move to Camp Nou.
  3. Baker's been stinky lately behind the plate and at it.
  4. Debut of the moon walk. This is epic. Game over! The King of Pop was born!
  5. Thank god for Parcells,Ireland and Sparano. They give the Dolphins some credibility that the ownership side lacks. I'm sure Stephen Ross knows business but he is kind of dopey and too much of a giddy fan (sorry just my opinion). And now the Estefans? That's embarassing.
  6. I know he is injured just now but is Maurice Edu a regular in your national side when fit? He got far more playing time in the second half of the season for Rangers and looked pretty good. However Beasley barely at all for us this year. Like Mets-bs said he's just breaking in but I expect we'll see more of him as time goes on. Beasley on the other hand has looked completely lost out there to me and I think his national team days are dwindling.
  7. I grew up with Michael Jackson (figuratively). One of my first LPs as a kid was the Jackson 5's ABC album. Even though I was more into punk and hard rock by the time I got to high school, I decided to go out and buy Off The Wall when it came out and to this day think it is one of the best pop albums of all time. Then when I was in college Thriller came out which was just about as good but that was when I started to notice Michael was getting a little weird. By the time Bad came out we all knew he was a freak but damn the music was still infectious. After that even the music wasn't enough to make you forget what a nut job he was. It's a shame how he became such a grotesque caricature of what he thought the world wanted him to be. As a "grown" man he certainly had to be held accountable for his crimes against children but there can be no doubt that he was himself a victim of manipulation by his family and by the entertainment industry vultures that made billions of dollars off of him. It's a tragic story...with a very cool soundtrack.
  8. Messi has probably over taken Ronaldo in popularity. Ronaldo isn't liked by MANY. I never understood how a golfer can be more famous than a soccer player. Everyone can play soccer anywhere in the world. Only a small select few play golf anywhere. But the ladies LOVE Ronaldo (over Messi, Ronaldinho, etc.) and women are half the population. Only Beckham can challenge him in that regard but Beckham is past his prime.
  9. just had a question. most of the star players on USA's national team play internationally because they actually get recognition but why doesn't donovan play internationally. he's a pretty good player and he might be popular playing for a european club. Wasn't he playing for a German club or something. Early in his career he had a short stint at Bayer Leverkusen and this spring he spent a month with Munich on loan and carried himself well but he had contractual obligations with LA so he came back to MLS. I would not be surprised to see him return to Europe in the future.
  10. So maybe the club soccer thread should be retitled just "Soccer Thread" but there are a few of us here who care about this and realize that it was a big upset. And it may not carry the impact of a win during a World Cup but I was on the BBC website yesterday and more than a few comments were made comparing this to the 1950 upset over England during the World Cup, so even in Europe people realize what a big win this was. And I agree, Bosque was trying to play it down but this one hurt Spain alot. They were riding a wave of invincibility like no other international team has done before. Confed Cup or not, they were stunned. They are still the class of Europe but this was a reality check for them.
  11. Well that was a stunner for sure. I'm happy to eat my words from my previous post. Onyewu and DeMerit were incredible. The US team was fit and fired up. I haven't been a big fan but you have to give Bob Bradley credit. The defense won this match. I hope American soccer fans appreciate the magnitude of this upset.
  12. It would be the one of if not the greatest upset in the history of international competition. Certainly the greatest upset in the history of US soccer. Modern US Soccer, yes. All time, no. The miracle on grass is the greatest ever. Well I suppose so, especially because it was during a World Cup and the lowly US taking down the mighty English. But this Spanish team is on the greatest international run ever with 15 wins in a row and 35 straight unbeaten. It would be a monumental upset.
  13. i hate how uneducated analysts are on ESPN when it comes to soccer. if you don't know about sport just don't talk about the confederation cup or get someone who knows about soccer. Well ESPN just gained the rights to broadcast 46 EPL games in the UK next year. I dislike their American analysts, especially the MLS guys. I think their international analysts are ok. Shaka Hislop and Janus Mihalic (altough he's a US citizen) are ok. I like Derek Rae. Tommy Smyth is a blowhard but he's entertaining in small doses.
  14. It's all on Lindstrom. He had a 6-3 lead with two outs. A closer with a WHIP close to 2 is unacceptable. Hell any pitcher with a WHIP of 2 is unacceptable. I don't blame Sanches. That's a tough spot to come into after your supposed closer has just sh!t all over himself and then it's your job to clean up the mess.
  15. Damn. I had to leave with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Marlins up 6-3. When I get back it's 6-6 in the 12th. WTF are we going to do with Lindstrom?
  16. The Italians imploded. I feel bad for them. They're in a downturn. Their stars are old and their future stars are still developing. They'll be back. I don't know what to say about the US. I'm stunned really. They have not an ice cubes chance in hell of beating Spain but I hope they don't embarass us. nothing can be more embarrassing than the performance italy put forward. not a big fan of donovan but he needs to be selfish and drill some shots instead of always passing if the US has any chance of winning this. I agree about Donovan but even if he plays the best game of his life the US has no chance of beating Spain. It would be the one of if not the greatest upset in the history of international competition. Certainly the greatest upset in the history of US soccer.
  17. The Italians imploded. I feel bad for them. They're in a downturn. Their stars are old and their future stars are still developing. They'll be back. I don't know what to say about the US. I'm stunned really. They have not an ice cubes chance in hell of beating Spain but I hope they don't embarass us.
  18. The guy has like a 49 WHIP. He's not "getting the job done." 1.80. No, I'm pretty sure it's in the 40's. Also, good point in your favor, ignoring the fact that I was being obviously facetious. He's been bad. LOL. He says it like a WHIP of 1.80 is something to be proud of.
  19. Let's give it up for the videographer though. Kept his composure and kept filming and even managed to get a shot of the ball being tossed up to a fan in that section.. just to add a little ironic touch. Bravo!
  20. I couldn't watch the game but I don't understand why they didn't penalize us in some way (I don't know the rules) or at least nullify the pitch that was thrown with Coghlan out there, which was a ball. All in all it shouldn't be that big of a deal but it always worries me. Actually, it was a strike. And maybe he has a point saying it should have been taken off the board. But no difference. The next pitch was a short pop up. We were penalized 2 players (Chris and ADA). But GI Joe wants a redo from the 8th on? Fine. Fly back down here, play from the 8th on, and we win 6-3. Lindstrom would love that. Bottom line...Nothing is going to happen. That's right it was a strike and they could argue that it changes the situation for the hitter and the pitcher. That's where the umpires erred. Coghlan should have come out and did but they should have taken away the strike. I don't know if the league will order a replay of the end of the game because of the logistics and the miniscule chance it's going to impact anything in the long run. It's a minor point but a legitimate one.
  21. that was a good PK save from south africa's goalkeeper but the save from the rebound was even more impressive. too bad david villa scored a goal like a couple seconds later. those horns the audience is blowing is really getting on my nerves. they better not allow those during the world cup. According to FIFA they don't want to be seen as trying to "Europeanize" African soccer before the World Cup, so they have no intention of banning the "vuvuzela" for now, although I agree they are extremely annoying.
  22. I would have hoped all of these Andino supporters would have let it go after the Marlins traded him. Statistically Andino is no better than Bonifacio is. He has a point though, in that we already has Bonifacio in Andino, so why trade for Bonifacio. Bonfiacio probably is slightly better and more potential because of his speed but Andino is also a lot better defender. Something to remember though is we did not trade hammer and olsen for just bonifacio. One of the other guys we got, a 2nd base prospect name Jake Smolinski, is lighting up Greensboro. Absolutely, that was a sleeper part of the deal. He's a very promising hitter.
  23. Most of you guys are probably too young to remember the race-related riots in Miami in the early eighties but they were bad. They were not sports riots but there was plenty of looting and car burning and violence. It was not a good time. When people have a lot of pent up frustration it just takes a little spark to set them off. In the eighties Miami was very racially/ethnically charged (more than now). There was alot of violence going on and the police departments were dealing with a lot of corruption. Imagine how it is in LA and Detroit all the time and especially now that things in California are so bad economically (come to think of it things are bad in Detroit too... it may be a good thing the Red Wings and the Pistons didn't win any titles this year). Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning or excusing rioting. There are just certain conditions that predispose to it no matter what city it is. Miami is no better or no worse.
  24. did anyone else see the egypt-italy game. that was a really good game and egypt played hard our there, they deserved the win. i'm really impressed by their goalkeeper. Yeah that was a stunner. Egypt played well against Brazil too. Sets up a good match with Brazil/Italy on Sunday. As for Ibrahimovic, I think he wants to play at Barca rather than Madrid. No way he will share the spotlight with Ronaldo. Messi maybe but not Ronaldo. Besides Ibrahimovic is too ugly to play for Real Madrid. i agree, that is going to be a good game and i'm going to be glued to the tv. although i'm an ibrahimovic fan, he seems self-centered and wants all the spot light. i'm not sure if this was sweden's national team coach or inter's coach but wasn't one of them having problems with ibrahimovic's attitude. still a great player though I will admit I never watch Serie A matches so I don't know what Ibrahimovic is like on a weekly basis, but on the numerous times I've watched Inter on the big stage, the Champions League, he has been absolutely useless. It baffles me how people are saying he is valued at ?80m. I don't think he had problems with Mourhinho. I think it was the Swedish national manager. I watched alot of Serie A this year and the thing about Ibrahimovic is that he has a surly attitude most of the time but he's absolutely dangerous with the ball. Not only does he have incredible reach but for a tall lanky guy he has amazing body control and a devastating shot. I too was a skeptic at first and never liked him because of his attitude but after watching him I believe he is a top five player.
  25. Yes, it's been extremely depressing only winning two World Series in past twelve years. I couldn't imagine what you would be saying if you were a Nats fan. Or a Cubs fan Exactly. Or look at Boston. They had the best, most knowedgeable, enthusiastic fans yet they had to endure the futility and humiliation of the Curse of the Bambino for 80+ years. (unfortunately now that they are successful they've become annoying). I know this team is frustrating but come on...there's no crying in baseball.
