  1. Do you guys think that attendance will be significantly better at the new stadium once the novelty wears off? What's your sense of that? Being a current resident of the DC area and now a Nats fan, but a former Miamian and still a Marlins fan, as well, I'm curious about what the feeling is down there about how much difference the new ballpark will make in attendance. I think it will improve. And most people forget that the Marlins actually weren't last in attendance last year. But even with their low rank, they still averaged 19K per game, which 5 years ago would not have been too bad. The popularity of the game is on the rise, and so is attendance. I would think the Marlins will draw at least 25K a night for the long haul. They'll never sell out every game, but now that the team is in a position to compete PLUS with the new park, they will be a better draw for the long haul. That would be great to see.

  3. If the Nationals sign Fielder and with their current strting pitching, the Marlins may be the fourth best team in the NL East. I agree. By the all-star break the Nats could have a line-up of Desmond, Werth, Zimmerman, Morse, Fielder, Harper, Espinosa, and Ramos along with a pretty good rotation (Strasburg, Zimmermann, Gonzalez, Wang and Detwiler/Lannan). That looks pretty solid.
  4. So the reporter asked him a question. He gives an honest answer that's factually correct. So he gets blasted. Weird world we live in. Quite the hypocritical response if you've ever been to a Washington Nationals game. What are you talking about? You can't even compare the attendance in DC with the attendance in Miami. The Marlins have been at the very bottom of league attendance over the past 3 seasons, averaging just under 16,000 (15,986 to be precise). Those figures are 16,668 last year, 16,919 in 2007, and 14,372 in 2006. The last time the team exceeded an average of 20,000 was 2005. The Nationals from 2005 through 2007, on the other hand, playing in a complete dump that makes Joe Robbie look like a palace, averaged 28,025 (24,217 in 2007, 26,580 in 2006, and 33,728 in 2005). They averaged 29,005 last year in the new stadium. I'm not saying that these are great attendance figures, but they are significantly stronger than what the Marlins have drawn. I remember one Nats game last year in Miami when there were fewer than 1,000 people in attendance. So, while the Nats don't, and probaby never will, draw like the Red Sox or the Yankees, they get respectable attendance for such a crappy team. If they ever start to win, just like any team, the stadium will be sold out most of the time because Washington fans tend to be front runners.

  6. Congratulations on what appears to be a major step forward toward your new stadium. I went to a few games at (then) Joe Robbie back in 1993 before I left Miami for DC, and I never thought that it was a good stadium for baseball. You guys deserve a real ballpark. We went through a terrible time up here as the DC city council and MLB went at each other like a snake and a mongoose as they worked out the stadium deal, and the city breathed a collective sigh of relief when things were finally settled. The new stadium is halfway finished at this point, and well on its way to being ready for the opener next year. I look forward to the Marlins getting a new park soon, as well.
