    Hello Andrew Miller

I was at Buchholz when he was Didn't actually know him though, he was two years ahead of me. It's cool knowing somebody that you went to HS with is making it big though. Only other name I know of that came out of Buchholz, sports wise, was Vernon Maxwell over a decade ago and that's not exactly somebody to brag about. So I'll be rooting for him.
  2. according to this article on Vick: "Dog fighting is a felony in 48 states and is a misdemeanor in Idaho and Wyoming. In Virginia, a conviction can carry up to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to $2,500, Strouse said." The and/or part makes me think he's going to get a fine of, at most, 2500 and nothing more...
  3. I'd really like to see how well he does healthy over a full season. He didn't exactly have a good minor league career, but his 2003 and 2005 (injured 2004) seasons make me hope (.924 and 965 OSP respectiviely, not amazing but not bad). You normally see power increases in players in the 26-27 age range, so I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he managed to hit 35-40+ HRs next year, expecially if he hits lefties like he did in 2005. He's injury prone though which makes me ;\ And, although I realize he was a C throughout the minors so it's not like he has that much experience at first, I would love to have a better defensive first baseman.
  4. If this turns out to be true, i am sure he will be sitting out some games. I hope he'll be sitting in jail. I absolutely love dogs, have 2 of them and plan to get more, and hearing things like pisses me off beyond belief. :thumbdown
  5. And what about Jacobs? When healthy, he's at the least a .900+ OPS guy against righties, the majority hand of pitchers. Both this year and in 2005 in very VERY limited ABs (22 ABs) he's done just aswell against lefties, but couldn't hit them worth sh*t last year (88 ABs). And ofcoarse, a 88 ABs > 22 ABs, so you have to lean towards he'll never hit them well over a season. Also, his last year in the minors (2005 AA), he had 106 ABs against LHP and had a .896 OPS, pointing to maybe he'll be able to hit them well. That's the last year I can find splits for (Is there another minor league split site outside of http://www.minorleaguesplits.com/ ?). Worse case scenerio and he keeps the .530 OPS he had against them last year, just keep getting a platoon guy. It's not hard to find cheap 1B's who hit left handers well. I deffinatly like how our lineup looks for 2008.
  6. I agree with most of what you're saying, I just don't think both have had enough time to really "prove" themself. Don't get me wrong, Wes has been real good in the 4 starts he's made. But 4 starts isn't much, and he has a bad track record. Given the option between the 30 year old who was poor in the past, and a 24 year old who had an average year last year, with neither pitching much so far this year, I'd choose the 24 year old. But if Wes got the role, it deffinatly wouldn't be the end of the world. But Kim is now set as the probable starter for Friday (I know it was talked about earlier, but nothing actually linked, and I was looking at probable pitchers for the TB series and saw him slotted for Friday's game), and I think it's bulls*** that Wes loses his role. He didn't do anything to lose it. What's with giving bad players traded for roles that other members had already earned?
  7. Even with a .266 BAA, he had a .355 OBP in his minor league career, and that's what matters. At first I thought De Aza leading off was stupid too, until I looked at his minor league OBP. I still say he should earn the role, wait a couple months to make sure that OBP carries over to the majors. But if it does, I wouldn't mind seeing him lead off. Just for reference, Hanley's minor league OBP: .352. Last year: .353. My only problem though is that I'd want Cabrera batting third to get him more ABs. And I'd want Ramirez batting ahead of Cabrera, to allow Cabrera to bat him in. Also, man, that Pierre trade is looking ridiculous. Three good young major league pitchers, not aces but at worst they are quality inning eaters, for one year of a CFer.
  8. I may actually make the 90 minute drive to St. Pete for Saturday's game just to avoid hearing these six talk about the Marlins. I was planning on going Sunday since it's a day game and I could get home early, but looks like I'll be going on Saturday now.
  9. I don't see why. Wes hasn't been able to get deep into games, only once going 6 innings. The last time he actually got actual starts, back in 2004, he only averaged about 5 1/3rd innings per start. Our bullpen is overworked, we need our starters to start being inning-eaters. Plus, Nolasco is 24 and up-and-coming, pitching well in 2 of 3 games since coming back, and having the best control of the 4 sophmores last year looking at BB/9, BB/K ratios...Wes is 30 years old with a career 5.65 ERA coming into the year. He's done well in 4 starts he's made, no doubt, but he also doesn't have a good track record. I'll be pissed if Wes gets put in the bullpen and Kim takes his spot, but I'd rather see Nolasco in the rotation then Wes.
  10. Putting the ball in play > striking out. Plain and simple. Putting the ball in play can result in a lot of things. Sacrifice flies, ground balls or fielder choices that score runs, errors, ect. ect. It's not just about getting on base. Strikes can never amount to anything. An out in play can.
  11. I think its a terrible idea. I mean we need to focus on dade, broward and palm beach. The rest of the state can come if they want, but if we are going to expect them to make regular treks to support them team then we are in big trouble. Yeah, I also think trying to focus on north Florida would make for a loss cause. I know myself and most people I know here, like north-florida teams more then Miami teams (Bucaneers/Jaguars, Magic, ect.). I know for me personally, I probably would be a Devil Ray fan if they were around when I was first getting into baseball. Marlins were the only team in the state then. So yeah, if they go outside of Miami, it should be somewhere, at most, only a couple hour drive. Driving to Miami is about a 6 hour drive from here, and although it's possible it's also not fun driving 12 hours back and forth in one day, so I need to find a place to stay to go to a home Marlin game. Meanwhile, Tampa is only a 2 hour drive away, something that's can easily be done, expecially on day games. Tampa going to Orlando is a good idea for them, because Orlando's only 2 hours away from Tampa I believe, and is a major city, so going there could greatly increase revenue. I can't think of any major city only -2 hours away from Miami that they could play in.
  12. Atlanta got a hit. :| This thread and the thread starter needs to go to hell. I dont see what the big deal is. Some baseball fans enjoy watching great games and if he hadnt posted it I would have had no clue it was going on. The only thing I would have done differently was not mention the "word" in the title of the thread. Yeah, it's not like there's such a thing as jinxing.
  13. Glad I picked up Bergmann on my fantasy team, haha. Is it on a channel yet? Checked TBS, ESPN, and ESPN2 and nothing.
  14. Kinda a hijack but I don't want to make a new thread for this and it deals with need a good quality version of a classical work. I'm looking for a piano version of the song Lux Aeterna (The main song from Requiem for a Dream, which is string). Piano's far and away my favorite instrument, and I heard a version of Lux Aeterna played on it on Youtube and was floored. Unfortunately, all the ones on youtube are really bad quality. The thing is, I don't even know where to start looking for a high quality version. But if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated
  15. Can Hermida play center? He always seemed like a good CF to me...good speed and a (I believe) good arm. With corner outfielder being easier to fill then CF, I didn't really understand why Hermida wasn't moved to center.
  16. If Kim is such a headcase, I wonder if it would have been better if we had gotten Josh Fogg instead. I know both him and Kim were on the block for the Rockies, and they're stats the past couple years have been pretty much equal (Though Kim was real good earlier in his career, where as Fogg has been consitantly bad since he made his debut).
  17. Hammer is a stud. I absolutely love him at the plate. But defense is another story. That's my main problem with this team. Hermida's a decent fielder and Amezaga is OK in CF. De Aza showed he could be good but he still made several rookie mistakes. Outside of that, our outfield defense is pretty attroucious. And then the IF, Uggla's has subpar deffense for a 2b's, Miggy just seems to not care out there, Jacobs is still learning first, and Olivo can't catch a ball that seriously hits his glove dead-center. Hanley's about the only one I'm not worried about, and even then he still makes a couple rookie mistakes that are frustrating. I think hitting will come around, I think pitching will come around. I don't know about defense though.

    Remember This Guy?

I doubt he'd DH anytime soon, he likes playing defense too much.
  19. The other 3 are just guys who no teams wanted and they got pawned off until they got here and stuck, for better or for worse. I think Amezaga and Ross would get bench spots on most every other team. You have to remember, the previous teams Ross were on were pretty clogged in the OF (Dodgers and Reds), and Amezaga's mass utility and ability to get on base against righties makes him valueable as a bench player. Borchard on the other hand...when he was waived by the Mariners, I believe it was still at the very begining of the season so standings were used from 2005. For us to land him, he would have had to clear all of the AL teams, and every other NL team besides the Phillies, the Braves, the Cards, and the Astros...which most likely he would have if we didn't claim him. So yeah. Most likely a team would claim him this year if we DFA'd him (Atlanta probably would, Oakland might, a few other teams I'm too lazy to think of), but that says more about their desperation then his abililty.

    A new low

And who would you suggest we start? Guys on the DL? The other people on the team that we can put out there are equal to, worse, or just barely mariginally better then those players. Until we get healthy, we're going to have a lot of holes. It doesn't matter who we put out there, they are all bench/AAAA material. I'm a lot more placid then a lot of people about how we're doing right now, there's high and lows in a season and this is deffinantly our low, but I just can't stand how sloppy we are on the field, both on offense and expecially on deffense. It's just plain ridiculous. It's not just the back ups, but the normal everyday players too. It's pointless to just point blame on the bench/AAAA guys, because they're not the only ones playing sloppy.
  21. B.J. Upton will be a good major league starter for years to come, and he will hit .285 this year. I wasn't saying that Upton will never be good, or that he isn't even good now (obviously he is). But there are a ton of people that just look at his numbers now and overrated his currently skill level. And considering his high SO rate and high BABIP, I really really really doubt he'll finish with a .285 average this year.
  22. Don't overrated Upton because of his hot start. He has an EXTREMELY high BABIP, showing he's been very lucky so far this year. Once it goes down to normal proportions he'll likely be hitting in the ~.260-270 range.
  23. He probably deserved it. Is he a choker? Yes, 100%. However, with that being said, he still had a helluva regular season and the Mavs had the league's best record. I see no problem here. Most Valuable Player. Not "Best player on the best team award," which I read ALL the time as the reasoning for why Nowitzki should get the MVP and I really don't understand. While I agree that the playoffs shouldn't matter for a regular season award like the MVP, I never thought he should have gotten it. The Mavs have been good when Nowitzki didn't play/played limited minutes/had bad nights. The Suns have been horrible when Nash doesn't play/played limited minutes/have bad nights. Nash is the most valuable player to his team on the upper-tier of teams (i.e. it could be argued that Kobe or hell even somebody like Pierce has more value then Nash to their team, but their teams aren't one of the best). I'd say Nowitzki is second yeah, but by a good margain.
  24. Just because you don't hear Terry or Howard's names that often doesn't mean they're not good ballplayers I actually think they should get rid of Terry and instead get a point guard who's better at running an offense. Howards already a VERY solid second scoring option, why have a shoot-first point guard? Harris could eventually be that guy but he looks a year or two away from being it. edit: well, they could also move Terry over to the 2, but my point is I don't think he should be their PG.
