  1. Leo Nunez has been about as good as the majority of closers in baseball. As they showed tonight, even KRod has his fair share of blown saves. Every closer blows saves; they're human. I'll take the trade. We actually won, and Jose Veras stepped up and pitched well. If the middle relief steps up, I'm not really all that worried about Leo. Hopefully I'm right because beginning next week, he'll be on my fantasy team. His peripherals say he'll be fine. His changeup just wasn't working as well as it normally is tonight. Needs to fall out of love with the changeup just like someone else needs to with the fastball IMO. Except his increase usage of change up is why he has continued to get better, both after coming here from the Royals and this year compared to last year. It's easily his best pitch. By using his change up more, his fast ball less, and basically ditching his slider, he has 1) Increased his strike outs, 2) Decreased his walks, and 3) Increased his ground ball rates thanks to it's movement. It's a win across the board I understand that his stats are good and it is highly due to the fact his changeup is nasty. In his blown saves however, he has only throw a number of fastballs. People ask why get beat on your 2nd or 3rd best pitch? My question is why keep getting beat on your first best pitch? Probably because you throw it way too much.

  3. The whole bullpen minus Leo and sanches needs to be optioned to the minors And Sanches isn't even that good, either. Seriously, I can't even blame Fredi Gonzalez anymore. This is just a bad team. Unfortunately, Josh Johnson was no longer in the stadium in the 11th inning. He's our best hitting pitcher. Fortunately, he pitches tomorrow. Seriously though, this team is just...I take back the bad, but I will definitely say it's nothing more than mediocre. Hey man things could be worse...you could be an Astros fan right now.:lol Talk about BAD!!!! Hope you are good otherwise.
  4. As far closers, any closers, your only as good as your last game! The Marlins have been fairly fortunate over the years with closers, but as of now I wouldn't rate Nunez as an all-star caliber closer. Why not? What about his stats doesn't scream all-star? Last night would be a good example, he hasn't been doing the job long enough or good enough to be an all-star 3 hits, 2 of which were hit softly, prove he's not worthy? The All-Star Game isn't a career achievement; it's based on what's being done in a year, prior to the game. "As of now," he's been an all-star caliber closer this year. Bingo. Plus, how is last night proof of anything negative? He was able to work around a couple lucky hits and shut the door. And he has been doing it for long enough, he's been doing it for 2 months. I say that because, as Erick said, this is the 2010 All-Star game, not the 2007-2010 All-Star game. It's about who's an all-star THIS YEAR, not who was best in other years. I would vote for him if I could. He has been really good...even when odds (hits or whatever) are against him.
  5. Leo has made adjustments and I agree he is doing well and will continue to do well throwing the change and locating the fastball for sure. Can't argue with this. I know Matt has been fortunate this year with bases loaded a couple of times for sure or else it would be even higher. You do play with fire when you allow people on base, but I don't think it's the end of the world so to say. You are right it can get you in trouble though
  6. I always thought Matt got hit hard because of his delivery. He has a very violent/explosive delivery which makes batters gear up for the hard stuff. So when he does throw the fast ball they're on it. I agree. His delivery stinks in my opinion. I think it is the reason he can't locate his pitches very well and it's the reason his hip hurts this year.
  7. Every time I see on the news about Gregg or Lindstrom melting down I feel like lighting a cigar. Like already pointed out, Lindstrom got off on a good start this year, but I was so glad when the Fish got rid of both those guys. Talked to both of them recently...they couldn't wait to get out of Florida. Just wait Leo will suck it up (hope he doesn't) and then you will want him out of town too. That's alright though because most of the players on Florida's squard are doing one thing and one thing only...trying to get the hell out of the state. For some odd reason, I think you hope he does. Leo has been really good thus far this year, and his current numbers for the first 2 months of the season don't suggest a dropoff, at all. Ever since they found out he was tipping his pitches in Spring Training, and got that corrected with him, he's been downright dominant. As for your last sentence...I think you're just being bitter. If everyone on the Marlins is trying to leave, the team sure as hell is doing good then, being 1 game over .500. Much better than what I could say for the Astros, at the moment. :thumbup Last year I was hoping he did blow up but he never did. I turned a new leaf this year and told myself that I would never root against another player (closer for that matter). Arnsberg will get Matt right and he will continue to improve and that's one positive he has going for him. Leo has been good and I hope he finds continued success...really I do. He will regress to his mean just like every player in the big leagues. I hope he has a career year and proves me wrong. I want you to know that I still cheer for Florida, in fact I wear all the Florida stuff in my home town. I get razzed for it for sure, but I like it. I'm not bitter at all, well maybe a little because the Astros suck so bad. I stand corrected!
  8. Matt Lindstrom had a meltdown tonight too. It's his second in less than a week. He's been surprisingly solid this season but it seems like he's coming back down to earth. 1.61 WHIP. I don't know why his WHIP's are continuously so high, but that's not a number I'd want for my "closer." He has great stuff, but he was hittable here, and is still very hittable, for some reason. You know I got to come back and defend this right? Can't argue with the WHIP thing, however, he has only had 2 meltdowns so far this year and both of them were because of nagging injury (he is having a problem with his landing hip this year). When he feels 100% he is rather effective. 22 consecutive saves before he blew the one isn't bad-getting the job done anyways. His second half of the year is usually better so for him to have decent numbers in the first half is good for him. Needless to say he wouldn't hurt anyones bullpen, especially not the Marlins this year...correct me if I'm wrong. I fully understand why you defend him, but as a baseball fan, it is what it is. It seems everytime he struggles, you seem to make the excuse of nagging injuries, which over the course of the year everyone has. If he's truly injured, perhaps he shouldn't be forcing himself to pitch because you can't help your team when injured (which he should've learned last year). The WHIP is high, and he's now had a long enough career to admit that he's quite hittable. He doesn't have dominant, consistent strikeout stuff, and over the course of his career, he's allowed more hits than innings pitched (this year being no different). I don't understand why; he has good velocity on his fastball, and unlike some who continually say he's flat, I don't see that. I actually think his fastball has gained more movement over the years, from what I've seen...especially the couple of times I've seen him this year. WHIP is an important statistic, as well. It's unreasonable to suggest his ERA will remain under 3, with a WHIP at 1.61. His career WHIP is 1.46, and his ERA is just under 4. Basically, he's Kevin Gregg, only that Gregg allows the longball more, while Lindstrom is more of a groundball pitcher. Truthfully, the comments on this thread about Gregg and Lindstrom are not fair because they truly weren't/aren't that bad, but at the end of the day, they're relievers I don't miss. They're your average major league relievers. Coming from the horses mouth directly. As for forcing himself to pitch, I agree, he shouldn't. I think you know as well as I do it's an ego thing even if it hurts the club. I think a lot of players do it. WHIP to me is not that important if you are getting the job done. You can give up a meaningless hit or walk every inning and have no damage done. I am realistic and understand that increases your chances of damage but still, WHIP isn't everything especially if you don't give up the long ball often. It's not unreasonable to suggest that his era will remain under 3. If so, then it's reasonable to suggest that Leo will regress back to his career 4.42 ERA and 1.31 WHIP because that is what the stats say. No where near Kevin Gregg, he hasn't walked 5 batters in the 9th inning yet. You don't have to miss them, they are doing fine in other organizations. Average or not they are still playing at the highest level in important roles. They must be doing something right? Otherwise they wouldn't be playing at all. :thumbup

  12. Hey Erik, Dom2613, Rab...everyone. It's been a long time since I've posted here. Just wanted to come on here and say what's up. You know that I am a Lindstrom fan and at the same time a Florida Marlin fan as well. I remember well our debates and opinions over last season. One of them was whether Lindstrom was healthy or not because of his inconsistencies. Due to the fact he had no spring training last year because of the WBC IMO attributed to his control issues and hurt his consistency. Matt is still good friends with most of the players on the team, in fact John Baker, Wes Helms, Cameron Maybin, and Matt all went out to dinner and the mall yesterday before the game. This year with Brad Arnsberg and an actual spring training he has learned new grips on different pitches and is consistently throwing them for strikes. He attributes most of his success to Arnsberg. You might wonder how I know all of this information and little insights...well it is because Matt Lindstrom is my brother. Matt appreciated all of your support throughout the last 3 seasons, sorry if I ever came off hostile or beligerent. Like I said I still follow the Marlins and hope they do well. Good Luck this season. Hey man, what's up, long time no see. Someone actually asked for you on the gamethread when he came in. That's good to hear he's doing well. I never knew you were his brother either, I can see now why you took offense to some of the things that were said before. Feel free to stop by, and share how he's doing every once in awhile too...he's actually on my fantasy team that I'm paying good money for, and I just traded Brian Wilson tonight so he's (Lindstrom) going to end up being 1 of my 2 closers now, lol. Seems like he learned how to throw a 2 seamer from what I saw tonight...and the statistics look nice, as he hasn't walked a batter yet. It's early, but Lindstrom (and Nunez, as well, to be fair) are doing well in their roles, right now. Since this is the postgame thread, I'll say, again, that I don't think the Astros are as bad as their early record indicates. I don't know why people keep saying they're horrible. They had an 8 game losing streak to begin the year. Those things happen, but they're a pretty average team...not bad/horrible. We appreciate the support we really do. That is cool that he is on your fantasy team...I hope he continues to pitch well for Houston and for your team. You know as far as the 2 seamer is concerned I think its his best pitch next to the split-change that he never ever throws. It's all about mixing in pitches because you and I both know that MLB hitters can square the hard one up. The Astros aren't too bad considering they faced potentially the division leaders in the NL West (Giants), then the NL East (Phillies), then the NL Central (Cardinals) their first 9 games. Those teams have some pretty good pitching. It looks like the bullpen for the Marlins is going to be the biggest frustration this year. Nunez is doing a good job...his stats are nice too. It's nice to see Dan Uggla hitting over .300 and Jorge Cantu is a hitting machine. Like I said before; I like the Marlins and believe they are only a few bullpen arms away to go a long ways this year. I'll keep you posted bro. It was nice hearing from you tonight. Still jealous of your baseball knowledge. I got insight...you got knowledge!

  14. I find it interesting that it says upgrading the bullpen is a priority, yet we trade lindstrom, lose kiko and donnelly. And will possibly lose pinto also. Trading away Lindstrom is upgrading the bullpen. No...he's upgrading Houston's bullpen...not the Marlins. Lindstrom will have a better year than any of the Marlins relievers...book it. That's not saying much for Lindstrom, to be fair. Fair? Since when were you ever fair in your comments about Lindstrom?
