Basically there’s a split analysis: - Given the team’s imposed financial constraints, not making the qualifying offer may have been prudent if they believed Soler was likely to accept it - Baseball has no salary cap, there’s no good reason they can’t spend a lot more than they are, and they didn’t actively pursue any free agents anyway. Make the qualifying offer, and either: he accepts ➡️ you’ve improved your 2024 roster, or he declines ➡️ you add a high draft pick to improve a bad farm system (bottom quarter in MLB by the assessments I’ve seen so far).

Baseball playoff series are very small sample sizes. Anecdotal notes about the dodgers and rays don’t mean (sonof)jack. By the way, the Dodgers and Rays are 4/14 (29%) World Series participants, and 1/7 (14%) champions since 2017. Considering there have been 10 or 12 teams making the playoffs during that time, this is still a strong showing.

I put in my calendar to watch it after reading the 2018 fangraphs elegy and the Marlins signing a free agent, but somehow I never got around to it.
