  7. 4:45 p.m. ET: C.J. Wilson has a six-year offer from a team other than the Rangers, reports Jeff Wilson. MLB Trade Rumors notes the Rangers, Angels, Nationals, Marlins and that dreaded "mystery team" are currently in the mix for Wilson's services. If he comes off the market, expect the heat to increase on the already-beloved Mark Buehrle. The two are easily the best left-handed starters out there. From CBS

  13. REPORT: Jays, Brewers, Rangers on Fielder's Short List Quote: It appears the Toronto Blue Jays are still in the running for free agent slugger Prince Fielder. According CBSCleveland.com, Fielder has shortened his list of possible destinations down to three teams that includes the Blue Jays, the Texas Rangers and the Milwaukee Brewers. And the report indicates the Jays are the favourites right now. The Blue Jays would like to add Fielder to complement AL home run king Jose Bautista on offence as well as solidify first base defensively. The Rangers could be that one bat away from a Word Series title after coming so close last season but they are also trying to re-sign starting pitcher C.J. Wilson. And the Brewers seem to be losing ground amid reports general manager Doug Melvin has not offered increased their offer to Fielder or even talked to his agent, Scott Boras since the general manager/ownership meetings in mid-November. Baseball's winter meetings begin in Dallas on Monday and Fielder is sure to be a topic of conversation among the various general managers. Via: http://tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=381952

  16. The Miami Marlins are courting superstar free-agents Albert Pujols and Jose Reyes this off-season, but they haven’t dismissed the possibility of making more modest offensive upgrades, as well. To that end, the Marlins have shown interest in veteran switch hitter Carlos Guillen, according to a major-league source. Guillen just completed a four-year, $48 million contract with the Tigers in which he averaged only 60 games over the final three seasons due to injuries. He was out for the first half of the 2011 season while recovering from left knee microfracture surgery and missed time down the stretch because of left wrist and right calf injuries. But he’s a valuable role player when healthy, capable of playing first base, second base, third base, and left field. Guillen, 36, could assume the infield utility role shared by Wes Helms and Jose Lopez last year, while serving as a late-inning pinch hitter when he doesn’t start. New Miami manager Ozzie Guillen (no relation) is very familiar with Carlos Guillen, having managed against him in the American League Central for the past eight seasons. -- Jon Paul Morosi
  17. Ok fellas, time to close this thread!
  18. Andrew McCutchen, who made his first All-Star team before slipping in the second half of last season, is potentially available in trade talks, a source told ESPN’s Keith Law. McCutchen just turned 25 in October and is four years away from free agency, so there’s certainly no pressure for the Pirates to move him now. It should also be noted that Law’s report doesn’t indicate that the Pirates are shopping him, just that they’d listen to offers. Even that idea, though, would have seemed far fetched a few months ago. One factor influencing the Pirates here is that they’ve tried and failed a couple of times to lock up McCutchen to a long-term deal. Also, McCutchen’s overall lack of growth since he entered the league is somewhat disturbing. While McCutchen has added power, he’s no better of a player now than he was in a rookie. His strikeout rate took a big jump last season (from 89 strikeouts in 653 plate appearances in 2010 to 126 in 678 plate appearances), and he hasn’t proven to be much better than an average defensive center fielder. Marlins anyone????
  19. Over lunch at Joe's Stone Crab and during a visit to their new stadium, the Marlins told left-hander C.J. Wilson that they want him in their starting rotation next year. To emphasize the point, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria led the ballpark tour Monday. "They rolled out the red carpet. They seem to have a plan and made it very clear they'd like CJ to be a part of it,' said Bob Garber, Wilson's agent. "I think he really impressed everybody today with his charisma. I think he'd be a great fit in South Florida.' Garber wouldn't comment when asked if the Marlins made an offer to the free agent, but he said Wilson "probably" would make a decision next week during baseball's winter meetings in Dallas. The Marlins face lots of competition for Wilson, who has been the No. 1 starter for the American League champion Texas Rangers for the past two seasons. Wilson, a native of Southern California, had dinner with members of the Los Angeles Angels front office last week. Garber also has met with the Washington Nationals and New York Yankees. Wilson has not ruled out returning to Texas, where he started his career in 2005 as a relief pitcher. "It may be a deal where he comes back and says, 'I want to be in Texas,' and it makes sense and we're able to work something out, and it may not," Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels told reporters last week in Texas. "C.J. is looking for what the market will bring. He deserves to be well-compensated." Wilson, 31, is 41-35 in his career with a 3.60 ERA. But he has pitched exclusively as a starter only since 2010, proving to be durable with 67 starts and 427 innings while going a combined 31-15 with a 3.14 ERA. Garber also represents 34-year-old Roy Oswalt, who was 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA for Philadelphia last season. The Marlins have expressed some interest in Oswalt but have made it clear they prefer Wilson. First baseman Albert Pujols, shortstop Jose Reyes and left-hander Mark Buehrle visited with the Marlins earlier this month, and all three have received offers.
