  1. True. Although I would hope that people will wait for a sale to actually take place before making a judgement on any ownership group. Also, I would like to believe that, 1. someone with the pristine image of Jeter isn't going to be associated with an ownership group that will be perceived as "cheap" and, 2. I believe that Manfred won't allow this team to be sold to a group that doesn't intend to operate like a real MLB franchise. This market is too important to the game.
  2. I interpreted Bush's comments as that the Marlins are going to have to be run smarter and build a team that can be good long term....and I agree. Throwing money around doesn't fix everything. For long term success, they need to fix their minor league system and that takes patience. I'm all for investing money into the draft and International markets first before going and handing out big contracts to Free Agents. I don't think the Marlins need a total tear down like the Astros did after they changed owners, but they do need to change how they operate...which under Loria is basically do whatever the owner decides when he wakes up that day.
  3. This seems odd. I mean if Jeter wanted to stop speculation about his involvement, he could just say something. Or...perhaps this "news" being put out there because Jeter knows his group doesn't have the highest offer... Until the team is sold, all of this is part of the negotiation process.
  4. I don't get it. I know people don't like the current owner, but that doesn't make the team itself any less valuable. It's 1 of 30 in the world, and is located in a desirable market...with a new stadium...and new TV/naming rights deals on the way. The fact that the team has been so poorly run might even make it more desirable since there is a lot of untapped potential here.
  5. There are only 30 of these franchises. It's not surprising that the team is drawing a lot of interest. As for it being paid propaganda by Loria, don't you think Jeter/Bush/Glavine/etc. would have come out to deny these reports by now if there was nothing to them?
  6. Tom Hicks or Lew Wolff are the 2 most recent former owners of MLB teams. Although I suppose this person could have been a minority owner.
  7. FWIW, Celebrity Net Worth said Vinnie Viola was worth $35 million when he bought the Panthers (people freaked out about that too)...and he's actually worth billions. So I don't think I would put much stock in what is on the Internet when it comes to estimating how much someone actually has.
  8. He's almost 80 and has nobody to leave the team to. Franchise values are high. He's won a WS, got a stadium built, and now has the All Star game. What's left to accomplish? Might as well cash in now and enjoy his windfall while he's able to do so. Just my guess.
  9. Joel Sherman tweeted that they aren't involved in the deal Forbes reported.
  10. Stephen Ross is from NY...so are the Panthers owners. Not that unusual.
  11. Yup. They've always denied any sale reports in the past. Since the last Forbes story, it's just been "no comment". Perhaps this is more than smoke...
  12. Frisaro says he'll be a starter for us. This is mildly interesting. He was a starter up until last season in the Phils system. Guess it's good to add some rotation depth. He was a decent prospect a couple of years ago and still relatively young. Not a bad gamble for nothing...Maybe he can figure something out with a change in organizations.
  13. Yup. Getting four controllable years of a mid-rotation starter is not nothing in the current pitching market.
  14. Some prospective on these prospects we gave up... http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/projecting-the-prospects-in-the-dan-straily-trade/ Not saying we didn't give up value here, I just think some may be overrating what we lost.
  15. Eovaldi was starting in MLB at 21. Castillo is 24 in AA and "still developing". He's got a good arm, but there's a reason the best we could get for him was a Straily-type.
  16. Played for Mattingly in LA. I wonder if NO is going with the super bullpen strategy as well. Looks like they'll at least have Wittgren/Ellington, Guererro, Steckenrider, Brice, Cervenka, and Araujo in their pen.
  17. All 2 year deals with no major money...and all are easily movable if need be. No buyer would be concerned with these deals.
  18. He'd be ideal, but would he accept that role? Or would he rather stay in the AL where he could also get ABs at DH?
  19. I'd like to see them take a shot at Encarnacion, but I assume they will target one of Plouffe, Reynolds, or Lee as a RH first baseman.
  20. True, but I assume whoever buys it will know the mistakes that Loria has made. I guess we will have to see, but I'm willing to take my chances with a new owner.
  21. I'm think that someone who is going pay over $1B for the team is probably more inclined to run it the right way than not.
  22. Forbes is not a good way to determine the real value of a team, at least when it comes to sales. First of all, I think the most recent Forbes list had them at $625 million...but that's besides the point. There are only 30 of these things and the most recent one sold went for $1.6B. Also, that Forbes value is based on them having one of the worst TV deals in sports. That expires in a couple of years. Bottom line is Loria will get over $1B when he sells, which will hopefully be soon.
  23. Not sure why people would be surprised. The Mariners just sold for $1.6 billion. Why would anyone think he'd ask for less than the most recent sale price? Will he get it? Maybe, maybe not, but it is not an unrealistic starting point. This is a team with a new ballpark, a new TV deal in the next couple of years, and an attractive market. Maybe he won't get $1.7B, but I bet he gets over $1B when it's all said and done. The important part isn't the asking price, it's that there is a price and that means he's willing to sell. Between this and the Romney news from a few weeks back, I think we are seeing the start of the sale process happening. At least I really hope so anyway.
  24. Mattingly talked about our lack of depth in the end of year press conference. At least they are starting to address it.
