The Lineup: vs. Florida, 03.03.07
By Derrick Goold
03/03/2007 8:32 am

JUPITER, Fla. — The nudge-nudge rule governing spring training games is that each team must field at least four starters from their big-league lineup for each exhibition. Manager Tony La Russa has said he tries to take that rule seriously, within reason and within regards to his veterans’ schedule.

At first glance, today’s lineup appears to adopt a creative interpretation of the rule.

And then you consider the injuries.

With all but the catcher from their up-the-middle defense out with injury and Albert Pujols getting a scheduled day off, the Cardinals have a lineup loaded with players vying for big-league spots — and a No. 3 hitter destined for Memphis and a second baseman looking to show his versatility. (Preston Wilson, for example, was a late scratch and John Rodriguez was his substitute.) The Cardinals seem in violation of the rule of four, not to be confused with the book by the same title.

But, if these injuries linger, maybe not.

The batting orders and pitching plans:

THE CARDINALS (1-2)

1. Skip Schumaker, CF
2. Jolbert Cabrera, SS
3. Rick Ankiel, DH
4. Scott Rolen, 3B
5. John Rodriguez, RF
6. Miguel Negron, LF
7. Yadier Molina, C
8. Eli Marrero, 1B
9. Brendan Ryan, 2B

Starting pitcher: RHP Kip Wells (40 pitches). Followed by: LHP Troy Cate (40), LHP Randy Keisler (40), RHP Josh Hancock (30), LHP Randy Flores (30), RHP Mike Sillman (30), Brian Falkenborg (30), Dennis Dove (30).

THE MARLINS (1-2)

1. Alfredo Amezaga, SS
2. Dan Uggla, 2B
3. Aaron Boone, 3B
4. Josh Willingham, LF
5. Joe Borchard, RF
6. Miguel Olivo, DH
7. Jason Wood, 3B
8. Brett Hayes, C
9. Eric Reed, CF

Starting pitcher: RHP Anibal Sanchez.

Nope not as of yet, you have to subscribe for the regular season and then they include Spring Training.
