HOUSTON -- Astros pitcher Carlos Hernandez will miss the 2003 season following surgery Tuesday on his left shoulder.

Hernandez, a left-hander, had the operation Tuesday to repair tear in his rotator cuff and labrum. Dr. James Andrews also tightened the capsule in Hernandez's shoulder during the operation, performed in Birmingham, Ala.

Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker said Hernandez's recovery time is estimated to be nine to 11 months.

"We are optimistic that Carlos will be able to return,'' Hunsicker said.

Hernandez, 22, went 8-5 with a 3.92 earned-run average in 26 games.

Interesting. No mention of when the injury took place, or any reason for the timing of the surgery.

Certainly a bit a of a blow for the young, talented staff of the Astros.

later.....

I like Carlos.

He has had a bum shoulder for a while now and they have been hoping that it was not this bad and would get better through rest and rehab.

That was not the case.

Great left handed pitcher. Should be able to make a full recovery especially as he is only 23.

The Astros still have a better and more proven staff than the Marlins, at least based on prior MLB results.

Anyone know how Carlos initially hurt his shoulder?

I'm guessing it was something boneheaded, or something at home.

The astro's have a lot of problems with these freak Injuries. Like the Alou injury that kept him grounded for awhile.
