Chipper sprains ankle, leaves game
Braves third baseman injured running out grounder
By Matthew Leach / MLB.com

JUPITER, Fla. -- Braves third baseman Chipper Jones sustained a sprained left ankle and was removed from Monday's game against the Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium.

Jones' status is "day to day," according to the club.

Jones hit a grounder to first base in the first inning but ran only part of the way down to the base on the play. He moved slowly back to the dugout, then did not emerge for the bottom of the first. Pete Orr took Jones' place at third base and in the No. 3 spot in the batting order.

Jones, 34, has battled injuries over the past several years. He hasn't played more than 137 games in a season since 2003. This spring, Jones is 4-for-18 (.222) with four walks, a run and two RBIs.

second injury for us in a week...this can't be good for us. i hope orr can fill in the gaps left by chipper if this is a foreshadowing of another injury plagued season for our superstar.

I have no love for Chipper, but even I feel bad for him. It's really a shame to see a guy who was one of the game's biggest stars a decade ago have his career derailed.

He is nearing the end of his career and can't stay off the DL. This could be the end for him.

agreed Chipper is the king of the meaningless stat in a game when he is up by 7 he will kill you or down by seven but i have never feared him and have never viewed him as a clutch player

fyi, he hit a walkoff homer on may 17th of last year in 11 innings to beat the marlins. so he has hurt the marlins lately, and hit in the clutch.

but i do agree that chipper's presence is diminishing.

That was one time. My point was he hasn't been the Marlins' Bucky Dent.

Chipper is one of my favorite non-Marlins players. One of the top players of the 90's in my opinion.

Never been a big fan. I'm just waiting for the news on Griffey breaking himself once more so my spring training news can be complete...

It may be the time of his career when he like a lot of other great ballplayers gets moved to 1b. It's a shame the Braves traded all those 3b prospects like Marte and Betimet.

i should have posted this earlier, but chipper got hurt again (no not his foot), but he strained his right oblique during batting practice friday, and will be out for a few more days. ugh. i think some Admin chants will make it better for him, but at least his gators are through to week two. (he likes uf).

Notes: Chipper's injury not serious
Gonzalez feels no discomfort; Woodward strong in return
By Mark Bowman / MLB.com

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- It took Chipper Jones just one day to overcome the ankle sprain he suffered earlier this week. It still remains to be seen how long his latest ailment will sideline him.
Jones was scratched from Friday night's lineup against the Cardinals because of a sore right oblique muscle that he suffered during batting practice. This isn't the same left oblique muscle that accounted for two of his three trips to the disabled list last year.

Nor is this currently considered a significant injury. But knowing that oblique injuries can prove to be lingering problems, Braves manager Bobby Cox isn't going to rush Jones back to action.

"I want to make sure it doesn't hurt," Cox said. "If I have to, I'll wait the rest of Spring [Training]."

As he was leaving Disney's Wide World of Sports complex just after the start of Friday night's game, Jones told a Braves official that the right oblique muscle "bit" him during batting practice.

Jones, who is hitting .280 (7-for-25) in Grapefruit League play, hasn't played more than 110 games either of the previous two seasons.

Fortunately, Jones' troublesome feet haven't yet proven to be a problem this year. He left Monday's game against the Cardinals after turning his left ankle while coming out of the batter's box during a first-inning at-bat.

When Jones returned to the lineup the following night against the Astros, he indicated that he needed to get some at-bats. The 34-year-old third baseman hit his first homer of the spring during Thursday night's loss to the Yankees.

Watching this game on ESPN, it doesn't appear he's feeling any ill affects.
