SAN FRANCISCO - Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist David Halberstam was killed in a car crash early Monday, a county coroner said. He was 73.

Three others were injured.

Harper's magazine called him "a legend in American journalism."

Halberstam was also a runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize for his best seller "War in a Time of Peace."

The New York Times called it "a tour de force ... likely to stand as the definitive record of the American use of armed force in the decade of the ?90s."

His classic "The Best and The Brightest" is the definitive book on how and why the United States went to war in Vietnam.

He also wrote "The Teammates", the book about Ted Williams' friends Johnny Pesky, Dom DiMaggio, and Bob Doerr, and their experiences surrounding his funeral.
