Japanese signings: Spanning the globe for talent, the Marlins have signed two prospects from Japan -- catcher Masahiro Ishida and right-handed pitcher Chi Kamimura.

Ishida, a 22-year-old former Fukuoka University player, has signed a minor-league contract. He is the first Japanese-born catcher to sign with a Major League organization.

The Marlins anticipate Ishida to play this season for Class-A Jupiter.

Kamimura, 20, could be on a faster track to the Major Leagues, Marlins Senior Vice President/Director of International Operations Fred Ferreira said Tuesday.

"He throws in the mid-90s and has a great breaking ball," Ferreira said.

The 6-2, 180-pound Kamimura pitched in the Japanese instructional league.

Once the Marlins can get a look at him, they will determine where he fits into their minor league system.
