MARLINS NOTEBOOK
Marlins pursue Cubans in Brazil
Team ends draft with 24 pitchers

The Marlins are interested in a pair of Cuban players living in Brazil.

Pitcher Ernesto Chac?n, 29, and outfielder Juan Carlos Mu?iz, 27, were cleared May 27 by Major League Baseball to sign as free agents, and Fred Ferreira, the Marlins' director of international operations, was in Brazil to watch them work out two days later.

The players will try out for professional scouts later this month in Sao Paulo -- according to their representative, Miami attorney Scott Shapiro -- and then entertain offers. Mu?iz was once a teammate of Marlins pitcher Michael Tejera on the Cuban national team.

The Marlins also are close to resolving paperwork issues that have kept another Cuban prospect, Yolexandry Reina L?pez, out of the country. The 20-year-old right-hander agreed to terms with the team in January but hasn't been able to enter the United States because of problems involving his immigration status. He is expected to arrive at the team's minor-league camp in Jupiter next week.

NUNEZ RECALLED

The Marlins recalled right-hander reliever Vladimir Nu?ez from Triple A Albuquerque (N.M.) on Wednesday and sent down left-hander Juan Alvarez. Nu?ez was sent down April 25 after going 0-3 with a 14.90 ERA in 9 2/3 innings. In Albuquerque, he went 2-1 with two saves and a 7.07 ERA. In nine Marlins games, Alvarez gave up eight hits in 11 2/3 innings and had a 3.09 ERA.

Then look at Alverez...

In nine Marlins games, Alvarez gave up eight hits in 11 2/3 innings and had a 3.09 ERA

Quite a difference in the two's MLB stats...

Great, Abe is back. Now no lead is safe.

Can anyone provide an explaination why someone who has a AAA ERA over 7 is going anywhere but down to AA?

since either Tejera or Phelps is in the pen, we needed an extra righty....

Nunez isnt the best choice, but he has been good before..let's hope he is 'back'
