De Aza starting CF
The words haven't come out of Fredi Gonzalez's mouth yet, but Alejandro De Aza has won the starting center field job.

This morning, the Marlins announced Eric Reed had been optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque and Alex Sanchez had been released.

De Aza certainly earned the job, but I still question whether the Marlins aren't rushing him. He's played 69 games at Double-A and wasn't even regarded as one of the organization's top 30 prospects according to Baseball America. Considering how thorough BA is, you have to think De Aza surprised the front office as much as everybody else this spring.

In other moves, the Marlins released Felix Rodriguez and Mike Koplove, and informed Jeremy Hermida and Taylor Tankersley they would open the season on the disabled list.

I don't get the Rodriguez move at all? He was pitching well with an ERA under 2

I worry that we are rushing him, but honestly it can't be much worse than what Reed/Sanchez would have been.
Didn't see this one coming at the beginning of the season though. I just hope he doesn't struggle incredibly like Reggie did and we hold out hope for 3/4 of the season.

All of our other pitchers in the pen have more upside than Rodriguez and didn't he have like 10 walks in 12 innings this spring?

That last spot in the bullpen, whether it's Field or Gardner, will be very short lived. As soon as Tank comes back, he's gone... Unless one of the others struggles immensely. But even then, we're talking a week into the season...

Anyone know how long Jeremy is expected to be on the DL? He was still limping today.

Tankersley to DL: Early Wednesday morning, Taylor Tankersley was informed he will begin the season on the disabled list. By early afternoon, the lefty reliever was on the mound in game action for the first time this spring.

The 24-year-old lefty reliever threw one inning in a Double-A game against the Mets on a back field at Roger Dean Stadium. Tankersley gave up one run on two hits and logged 15 total pitches.

The most telling thing about the outing was the 2004 first-round pick came through the outing feeling fine.

Tankersley's next scheduled outing will be on Saturday in Jupiter, Fla. He won't fly with the team to Washington, so he will not be on hand for Monday's opener.

"It's tough, because I've never been part of Opening Day," Tankersley said. "But I'm going to be part of the team for 145 games."

A year ago, Tankersley opened the season in Double-A Carolina, and he was eventually called up in early June. He's been building himself back up from shoulder inflammation all spring.

The move has not been made official yet, but Tankersley will begin the season on the DL, retroactive to March 23. That means the earliest he can be reinstated will be on April 7.

Gonzalez, however, noted that the club isn't going to rush Tankersley, its top lefty setup reliever.

Until Tankersley is ready, Renyel Pinto is the lone southpaw in the bullpen.
