We should definitely have a better record with the way our players have put up numbers. Check out this CBS sportsline ranking...It takes into account 1) infield 2) outfield 3)starting rotation 4)bullpen

It gives each player a number ranking and then averages all the players together in their categories giving that category an average score. They then add up all the categories for a final score...we are 11th overall...ahead of both the Expos and Phillies...4 of 5 NL East teams are in the top 15. Interesting rankings and prove to me in hard stats that we should be about 7-8 games over .500 statistically. It's mind boggling we had such a bad record, but at least now we are approaching .500 and gaining in the standings! GO FISH!

Very true. This also amazed me today. At one point we were 19-29 which is 10 games under .500 so just to get to this point of being one game under is quite an achievment. In the past 5 or 6 games our offense has been MIA which makes it even more impressive. When your pitching picks up your offense and vice versa for a stretch of games you can find out just how good your team is.

I think Billy Beane is full of sh*t. The A's dont do well because of his mathematical crap. They do it because of midseason trades. There are plenty of examples of why his idea of using eggheads to figure out who is best in baseball instead of coaches and managers works, but there are also plenty of examples of why his method doesn't work.

I for one think it is crap. I have a hard time believing that stats tell the whole story. I think there is a such thing as gut feelings, and instinct. And I think that stats and numbers can never tell the whole story. Probablities, chances, odds, all that bs...its crap.

And he makes excuses for not doing well in the playoffs...he said something like this: "Once you get into the playoffs, winning the World Series is luck." Well, I know a bunch of Yankees fans, Angels fans, Marlins fans (97 baby!) who would disagree.

Wow. Sounds like an incredible book. did you read that Voros article on pitching and defense? Very technical, but well thought out calculations regardless.
