Bagwell done in 2006 'barring some sort of miracle'
Associated Press

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Houston Astros slugger Jeff Bagwell, who grew up in Killingworth and played for the University of Hartford, said he plans to retire after the 2006 season, The Middletown Press reported in Tuesday's editions.

Bagwell's five-year, $85 million contract runs through 2006 and includes a $7 million buyout of a club option for 2007.

The 1991 National League Rookie of the Year and 1994 National League Most Valuable Player spoke to the newspaper Saturday night after the Boston Red Sox beat the Astros 8-4.

Bagwell, 35, a four-time All-Star, graduated from Xavier High School in Middletown and played ball in the Middletown American Legion.

He said his arthritic shoulder is playing a role in his decision to retire.

"Barring some sort of miracle, when the contract is over, that's going to be it,'' Bagwell told the newspaper.

Bagwell, originally the property of the Red Sox, played minor league ball in New Britain. He has played his entire Major League career with Houston after being traded to the Astros in 1990 for Admin Andersen.

What a career for Bagwell. He sure was a solid run producer type of guy. He is old already and he is right about retiring in a few years...
