Sources tell TSN the Florida Panthers have agreed to a trade involving Gary Roberts and have asked him to waive his no trade clause.

But sources say the deal is not with Toronto or Ottawa, the only two teams Roberts has said he will go to. So at this point, the ball is in Roberts' court, but there is no guarantee he will waive the clause.

Piitsburgh is believed to be the team with the most interest in Roberts.

Roberts is in the final season of a two-year, $4.5 million contract he signed with the Panthers in 2005.

The 40-year-old has 13 goals and 29 points this season.

Roberts has played 19 seasons in the NHL with the Panthers, Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Flames selected him 12th overall in the 1984 Entry Draft, and the former Ottawa 67s winger helped lead Calgary to its only Stanley Cup championship in 1989.

It doesnt say what we would get for him. I wonder, it is interesting the idea of him going to Pitt

You really have a problem trading a 40 year old free agent to be? I like Roberts as a player, but he's much more valuable to the Panthers right now as a tradeable asset.

Hopefully Martin stuck to his demand of a roster player and draft pick.

Speculation I saw ranged from malone to christianson (sp), to welsh (defenseman prospect supposedly good), to picks on a few hockey boards. Honestly I dont know most of them someone much smarter in hockey would be better to tell there.

Trade Winds

PalmsThey are swirling right now, and Gary Roberts finds himself smack dab in the middle of the storm.

Canada's TSN is saying the Panthers have a deal in place for Gary, but it's not one of the two teams (OTT and TOR) he has said he'll lift his no-trade clause for. Speculation is it's Pittsburgh looking to swing the deal.

If so, that's a perfect place for Roberts to end up. Pittsburgh is young and talented, and getting Gary's veteran leadership in the playoffs would be key.

Also hearing rumors that Chris Gratton may be going back to where it all started in Tampa Bay. Gratts has another year left on his deal, so this one may be tough. Gratts isn't very popular in the greater Tampa area, so that too may sour the deal.

Florida also has a number of offers on the table regarding one Todd Bertuzzi. We'll see if any of them blow JM away. Haven't heard anything yet regarding Gelinas or Belfour.

It's 1:15 p.m. right now and I'm about to get on a plane to Washington DC (The Big Apple).

Any updates here will come from my Treo so they'll be short and to the point -- and no cool pictures.

ALSO: Alex Auld confirmed today that he needs surgery and is out for the rest of the season. Hate to say this because he's such a cool guy, but Alex may have played his last game for the Panthers.

That Luongo trade was just dynamite.

I don't trust the Panthers' ability to make a good trade anymore.

That's not really fair. Keenan is gone now. Martin hasn't made any moves as GM yet, so i'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt for now, but we'll see where he stands after 3:00pm tomorrow.... :whistle

I want that christianson (sp) kid, I read that he was very good at shoot outs and lord knows we need help there.

take it for what it is worth (dont claim it to be worth much) But this was posted on a hockey message board:

ESPN 1250 said Noah Welch is rumored to be the player going the other way.

Welch is supposedly one of their top 5 prospects and defenseman. I am sure someone here could say how good or bad he is far better then me though.

Noah Welch is not a roster player, so I don't know if thats true.

He is however one of their top prospects.

I take what I said back. Welch is the player.

While the hockey world waits for veteran Gary Roberts to make up his mind as to whether he will approve or reject a trade to the Pittsburgh Penguins, globesports.com has learned that Noah Welch is the player the Penguins have offered the Florida Panthers in return for Roberts.

THE LATEST ON THE ROBERTS WATCH - PART DEUX.

GLOBE & MAIL: reports it has learned that Noah Welch is the player the Penguins have offered the Florida Panthers in return for Roberts.

Spector's Note: Hat tip to "Evan" for this link. A shout-out also to "eric" who notes, "The folks at LGP.com have confirmed that Welch is the guy going to Florida for Roberts if the deal is completed"

This would signal the end of probably both Mezei and Kwiatkowski in Florida.

And give us one of the sickest defense cores in the league. Welch is one of the top offensive defensive prospects in the game.

Allen, Bouwmeester, Welch and ? as our top 4.

Still would love to sign a vet to join in as well to give us a sick top 4. But that would in the future have to help protect even a subpar goalie like Auld (well maybe not auld).

Salei? Hello?

lol. Van Ryn as well. All top 5 defensemen with some to massive offensive potential. Doesn't get much better.

If I'm the Panthers, I move Van Ryn, but that's just one man's opinion.

I forgot all about Salei he has been playing better an better as the year has gone on and very cheaply signed I think too for his play :)

Sounds very good to me :) Now if we can resign bert, trade belfour for something nice and I would be happy

That trade keeps looking worse and worse. We get Bertuzzi for 7 games and Auld plays an average season then misses the last 2 months of the year and probably wont get resigned. In retrospect we essentially put Loungo on waivers.
