ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays released pitcher John Rocker on Friday.

Rocker was pitching for Double-A Orlando, where he was 0-1 with a 9.15 ERA in 17 games. He allowed 23 runs -- 20 earned -- 23 hits and 26 walks over 19 2/3 innings.

The left-hander, who was signed to a minor league contract April 10, appeared in two games earlier this season for the Devil Rays, giving up one run, two hits and three walks in one inning.

In 1999, Rocker's first full major league season, he had 38 saves as the Atlanta Braves went to the World Series. After that season, he made disparaging remarks about gays, minorities and others in a Sports Illustrated article. His career went into a tailspin after he was traded to Cleveland in June 2001.

He really has a bad attitude but he has filthy pitches but he gets in trouble too much so he cant pitch at the "Pro" Level. He should work with an instructer to improve because when he comes in they rack him!

He has a bad attitude in general, but not toward baseball.

He has a great work ethic and mentality for the game...

If they can fix Nunez let them try with Rocker. Rocker playing with Isotopes can't hurt too much and maybe he will bring in some butts to watch the Isotopes. Say what you want about him but he sure is damn tough.

They could also signed him for 300,000 so its worth a shot. Nothing to lose and a heck of a reliver if it works out.

Neither would I...

Rocker does what his name implies to hitters...

McKeon could change him around with his "old-school" style...

Rocker is a good pitcher, he just needs to cool it down...

Less intensity...
