i think we can all see he inconsistancies of each pitcher and i wonder if they need to develop another pitcher.....a curveball... they both have good fastball slider and changeups but u can always get by with that......look at the glavines the moyers, rich hill, barry zito, tom gorzelanny....they all ahve those big over the top cureveballs that are very effective.... anyone in favor of them developing those pitches?? i certainly am i could imagine scott having the guy thinking the diving slider and he pulls off a curve to buckle em. :mischief2

Scott's out pitch is his slider. If you take that away as a pitcher, you are taking away what got him here.

I think both need to work on further developing their change ups. If they can make the change a plus to go along with plus FBs and sliders...they will reach another level.

Why do you say Olsen has a plus FB?

not anyone can pitch 12-6 curveballs. Dontrelle has an orthodox motion in which he throws sidearm and olsen is closer to a sidearm motion than 3/4 motion. Its physically impossible to get that type of action on a curve. Pitchers like Moyer and Zito throw over the top.

Because he has one.
So mediocre command of a low 90s FB is considered a plus FB?

Olsen does not have a plus FB. A guy like John Maine who has 3 pitches (A Plus Fastball, a good slider and a medicore change) can get by because he decieves hitters. His FB rises from the waist to the head and hitters cant pick it up. He has crazy movement, Olsen's FB gets straight at times and when he can't control his secondary pitches, hitters lock onto his straight FB and drive it. Unlike Maine who a lot of the time can't get his secondary pitches over is able to feast on his plus fastball. 94 with great movement Maine has.

When you are a lefty and you have the type of late movement that Olsen's does, yes it is absolutely considered a plus fastball.

i understand what ur talkin about with the arm angles but if anyone can do it olsen can and u can throw a 12-6 curveball at a 3/4 arm delivery and dontrelle can do it also.

John Maine had absolutely nothing to do with the conversation.

Olsen and Willis need to work on developing their change-ups, but control should really be their number one priority.

Hmmm. A rising fastball. Okey dokey.

Yea they need work on their change ups. And Willis really needs work on his control when facing RHers at times. But with his delivery if he is off just a little he is toast. Consistency is his thing. Scotty's is keeping focused on his next pitch and forgetting things that have happened before that.

I'm trying to show the comparison of a pitcher with a plus fastball and a guy like Ashley Olsen who does not have a plus fastball and who has a nervous breakdown whenever some problems come up.

Scotty's stuff is vastly overshadowed by his out of the ordinary emotional play. He has a slightly plus FB which moves late, away from lefties... and then of course a very plus slider if he can control it.

John Maine plays for the Mets, and I could care less about him.

Olsen's main problems are mental. His current pitches are fine, of course it never hurts to improve his changeup, but really its lack of control over his emotions that kills him. Willis has a similar problem, gets too anxious, starts pitchign his next pitches with little time in between and starts losing consistency with his arm angles.

bingo. It doesn't matter if you throw a 150 fastball with movement better than wakefield's knuckler if you can't throw it for strikes.
