I know this has been beaten to death.. but I'd really like to know where everyone stands just on these 4 choices.

Thanks

I'd take Amezega or Sanchez. I'd have to see Sanchez in Spring Training though to give him a thumbs up. I don't buy Ross or Borchard as starters.

I'll take JoeBo. The defense is going to suck no matter who plays.. so I believe his offense would give us the most out of the position. His power would give us something not many CFs in baseball give their team, fwiw.

His play at the end of the season last year was encouraging. Platoon with Ross? So be it.

Question: Are the people voting for Sanchez over Amezaga because they'd rather have Amezaga settle into his utility role or because they think he would be a better option?

I know Reggie Abercrombie didn't have a very good year in 2006 but remember that he was a rookie. I think he showed a lot of promise and out of everyone we have he has the most potential by far. I would like to see him earn the job in Spring. I think he can be a solid player once he learns to hit consistently. Has that blazing speed that can really unnerve a pitcher when he's on base. And when he gets a hold of one it can go a looooong way. he hit a ball like 500 feet against Philly. You can't teach someone power like that- you are born with it. But if he isn't ready yet I think Amezaga did okay and he is fast enough to cover more ground than Cody or Borcho. Alex Sanchez is really bad in CF. Every ball hit to him would be an adventure. So here's one vote for Reggie but since he's not a choice for some reason (maybe you forgot??) then I put Fredo Mez. Allllllrrrrighty then lol .

Considering we haven't seen any of them play, this is kind of early, but if I just had to pick one person, I'd go with Borchard. I've been high on him since we got him and I truly believe he has the ability to play the position and post a .750-.790 OPS if not better.

Because Amezaga has no business playing CF!

I voted Sanchez, but I wouldn't mind Borchard at all. I think he's the most underrated of them on here. If we were going with a platoon I'd go Borchard/Ross.

Amezaga, as great a guy as he is, isn't a CF or even an OF. I don't mind him being an everything utility man, but I don't think he's at his best when he is starting regularly.

I like Sanchez for a few reasons. Besides having the best career offensive numbers of the bunch, he is the only career CF (even if a really bad one) of the bunch, and he is the only one who wouldn't seem to require a platoon. And while one could argue that Borchard could manage without a platoon, he does have issues w/ LHP. Sanchez does decent on both sides, but is a different type of hitter.

I think defense would more or less balance out with Ross/Borchard in CF though. While they lack the speed and inevitably range of some of their counterparts, those two have the best throwing arms of the bunch. The kind that can actually throw guys out at bases, not simply hold them from advancing.

And trading for Baldelli is still technically possible. But about as likely as either of Reed or Abercrombie winning that job. I think the goal is to restrict the discussion to realistic possibilities.

I'll give you that, but having had an entire season to see him, I can't imagine lightning striking twice for Reggie and him pulling that off again. But add to that he has more than Eric Reed and Chris Aguila to compete with. Last year Amezaga wasn't considered an option, Cody and Borchard weren't even on the team, and the same for Sanchez. It is a different situation.

And from what I've seen/read, neither does Sanchez.

If I was given no other choices besides what we have now and a platoon is out of the question, I'd say Reed.

With the choices available, no one will win the job and keep it all year. There's going to be an oh so fun merry-go-round in CF this year.

Are you related to Reggie as well? Or that guy that kept asking everyone in this forum about that shot in Cincy? I would agree with you and I tried to root for him but as a 26 year old (forget that he was a rookie) he made some terrible plays for us last year, ie, playing center in Atlanta. He just seems to not be able to hit anything off-speed and doesn't have any plate discipline. Unless he drastically improves on these areas (which is everything) then I would say he is last on our list. He may be five-tool potential but not all them are really any good.
