I have a little money to play with and I've just started getting into online stock trading. I'm also been taking Finance courses, including a Markets class that has really taught me a lot regarding investments. I was just curious if any of you had some good stocks you might 'advise' me to purchase, or any lesser known long-term winners.

I only have Nike, Disney and Merck in my portfolio right now (the majority of my holdings are mutual funds that I really need to tinker with), and I'm open to any suggestions or tips! In all likelihood I'll be taking out a good chunk of change for my 3 month Study Abroad experience, so I want to make sure I have some gains lined up for the summer while I'm gone.

Don't go nuts with stocks, I have had several shares of Morgan Stanley/Dean Witter for a long time and I've gotten a steady profit every year.

Ya, transaction costs kinda discourage that anyway, but I understand the principle of long term investments. I just want to rearrange my portfolio because I've never actually touched it before now. Basically, I have hte same investments since I was about 7 or 8.

COP - ConocoPhillips - should be strong with rising oil prices
PWI - PrimeWest Energy Trust - is another good energy stock that has a huge dividend rate

I have owned MA - Master Card - since June and it has gone gangbusters from $47.70 to $108.41 - it has been bouncing between $106 and $110 lately so if you can buy it at around $106, you can make a couple of bucks off of it.

I also like ISBC - Investors Bancorp Inc. - in the finance arena. They are a bargain at around $14 a share and should be trading closer to $16.

I have a couple that I keep to myself, but those are some strong options. Also, check out stockpickr.com to get some ideas from top hedge funds and mutual funds [coat tail investing]. Rennaisance Technologies is a ridiculously successful company so I pay special attention to their ideas. If I see something they own that is down a bit, I research those like mad because they are almost never wrong about a stock over the course of a year.

DUK and MSEX are both solid investments and aren't trading for high sums meaning more shares for you for less money.

I feel so poor. I only got $400 to invest so I'm looking at stocks such as CMGI.

Stockpickr.com is an awesome site though.

you can buy delta stock..

its only .35 or less.. they are coming out of bankruptcy on April 30th, and if the stock goes up to 2 or 3 bucks later on you make a nice little profit
