Adam Dunn or Steve Smitherman for Brad Penny and Luis Castillo?

*tsn.com* As if the Reds need another stud outfielder, Stephen Smitherman is mashing in the Southern League. Through 44 games he was hitting .309 with nine homers and 30 RBIs. He strikes out a lot (42 times in 147 AB), but he also draws a ton of walks (24 BB and a .409 OB). He could be the player that allows GM Jim Bowden to trade Adam Dunn for some pitching help -- with Austin Kearns, Ken Griffey, Jr., Jose Guillen and Wily Mo Pena all currently in the majors, such a move would make a lot of sense, especially with Smitherman on the way. ...

thoughts?

Id first just offer Brad and some AA pitching prospect....... now if we keep sucking, I offer up Castillo too..... They need someone to set the table.

Reds arent dumb....

let DLee go as a free agent, and we may get a 1st round compensatory pick from wherever he signs....

Dunn, Lowell, Sea Bass, Pierre, Encarnacion, Castro

not a bad little core....

and still with Pavano, Beckett, Redman, Burnett(out), Willis, whoever...

*gets goosebumps*

I'd throw in Tejera for yesterday's newspaper.

But wasnt it just the other day Ramp that you confirmed that I said they were untouchable (Dunn and Kearns)

I see the Reds exploring all options for Griffey before Dunn.

fine.

then try to get this Smitherman kid.

I assumed they were untouchable...Kearns is definitely, but as I read some stuff, it appears that Dunn may be available for some pitching and/or 2nd baseman

um Das....

if we are out of it in another month, Castillo will be gone anyway, and possibly even Penny...

Basham is a pretty good pitching prospect.

I hope we dont have to do the deal or any deal... i hope this team goes on a little run, but most likely, this season is over..... i hope i am wrong though

if we can keep Lowell, that would mean Cabs could be our power hitting OF that we want.....

grrr....

i love rhetorical questions

this team has a month to prove themselves...... if they cant hack it, then this team(unfortunately) should not be together...

We are probably going to lose Castillo and hopefully DLee...... it would be nice to get some quality players in return....hopefully major leaguers.... dont you think?

that's your core ramp.

who have the Marlins identified as their core.

AJ and Beckett I guess.

You need positional players as part of your core.

Lowell should be in that category, yet you constantly hear trade rumors and the Marlins do nothing to dispell them. You could argue for Castillo being in that category also.

Point being, you have to wonder what the 'plans' are for this organization.

oh and ramp...

i dont put almanza in your must keep category.

left handed relievers are a dime a dozen. Alamanza has done nothing amazing to warrant being placed in that category.

I would keep Mike Redmond. Very valuable reserve catcher.

Castillo you could go either way with....

But I still maintain that Pierre AND Castillo do not work together well. You cannot keep both long term. The rest of your list I could live with on our major league roster.
