Was Omar Minaya Recruiting Miguel Cabrera?!

NEW YORK ? Marlins President David Samson and General Manager Admin Beinfest could not have been pleased at what they observed from the Shea Stadium visitors' dugout Tuesday.

While the Mets were taking batting practice and the Marlins were stretching, Mets General Manager Omar Minaya engaged third baseman Miguel Cabrera in about a 10-minute conversation.

Per Major League Baseball directive, it was tampering. Was Minaya recruiting Cabrera, a free agent after the 2009 season? Of course not, but the subject matter is irrelevant.

MLB prohibits fraternizing among players when they are in uniform. It happens anyway, but rarely do you see front office personnel conversing with opposing players save for cursory greetings.

Minaya is one of the more congenial baseball people around. He's a fixture on the field during batting practice, and the Mets said it's not unusual to see him chatting up players on both sides. Monday, he spent part of the pregame visiting with Beinfest and manager Fredi Gonzalez, and even sat for a while in the Marlins dugout with owner Jeffrey Loria.

Beinfest and Minaya have enjoyed a productive business relationship. Two offseasons ago they struck two separate deals involving Carlos Delgado and Paul Lo Duca. This last offseason the Marlins acquired relievers Henry Owens and Matt Lindstrom from the Mets for Jason Vargas and Adam Bostick.

Though it was apparent the Minaya-Cabrera chat did not escape their notice, neither Samson nor Beinfest would comment on it.

This is interesting. I'm sure this is a non story but interesting nonetheless. I'm sure this article will bring the usual, WHO CARES?!? responses.

And Loria flew Bonds on a private plane to New York.

2010 is a billion sports years away.

That said, tampering is tampering, and if the Marlins feel strongly enough, they should file with the league.

It really shouldn't be a big deal. Like a GM has never spoken with an opposing player before. I'm sure David Samson was pissed off but if that's the case fine. I don't like that guy anyway.

I would hope Admin Beinfest was mature enough to realize they were probably just talking baseball/family/Mexican hat dances.

I doubt he becomes a free agent. If the Marlins can't sign him long term, they'll trade him while he's still under their control. So, if in fact it was a discussion about joining the Mets during free agency, the Fish would have already reaped the benefits of trading him.

Um, I realize that the 2 of them talking is not extremely newsworthy but diehard Marlins fans care if their best player gets traded/lost to FA.

Whenever he finds another team, I'm sure they will move Miggy over to first. He is an insane liability at 3B.

There were only a handful of 3B in all of baseball that were better than Cabs defensively last season.

One in Boston, one in Washington, one in St. Louis, one in Oakland.

He isnt a liability at 3B, no where near.
