Depends on who you're offering it to actually. You can't just offer long term contracts to every available free agent. Some might actually fit better on shorter deals.![]()
Marlins making progress in free-agent market
From the start of the Hot Stove season, the Marlins have said they are open to exploring all avenues to improve their big league roster. Now, the free-agent pool has expanded after Monday’s tender deadline. “That universe of available players changed by 56,” Marlins president of baseball...www.mlb.com
It's not a good strategy for the FA signings when you would only offering the "very short term" contracts…
Altuve isn't available. Besides he might not be able to hit without the sound of drums.Depends on who you're offering it to actually. You can't just offer long term contracts to every available free agent. Some might actually fit better on shorter deals.
Given where they are now, only two real courses of action make sense to me (ignoring trades):Depends on who you're offering it to actually. You can't just offer long term contracts to every available free agent. Some might actually fit better on shorter deals.
You need to offer the long term contracts to the young and in their prime FAs, but it's another pair of shoes if what you want was just mediocre ones.Depends on who you're offering it to actually. Marlins can't participate in the rule 5 draft with a full 40 man roster. They would have to DFA someone to make room before the draft. Can also option Brinson to AAA and keep Dean/Rule V pick on the roster. Probably best for him to play everyday and we can hope he starts getting it eventually.
Also, I can easily see two Rule V picks making this roster to replace Wallach (maybe - https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=sa875573&position=C) and optioning Brinson to AAA, along with a veteran CF lefty to chip in.
That’s a non issue. There is some deadweight on there with Keller and KinleyMarlins can't participate in the rule 5 draft with a full 40 man roster. They would have to DFA someone to make room before the draft.
Keller and Kinley? What about Conley? He's by far the worst performing pitcher on the current roster. That’s a non issue. There is some deadweight on there with Keller and Kinley
Seems excessive considering how many outfield options we already have. Solidify one outfield spot and then have everyone else compete for the other two spots and the backup roles. Is it possible that we signing both Garcia and Dickerson if we don't sign Castellanos ?
Conley is a lefty and a tweak away - https://blogs.fangraphs.com/these-three-marlins-lefties-have-some-funky-fastballs/Keller and Kinley? What about Conley? He's by far the worst performing pitcher on the current roster.
Yes, don't need them.Seems excessive considering how many outfield options we already have. Solidify one outfield spot and then have everyone else compete for the other two spots and the backup roles.
I feel like Conley has been a "tweak" away for years now, though.Conley is a lefty and a tweak away - https://blogs.fangraphs.com/these-three-marlins-lefties-have-some-funky-fastballs/
He's a hard hold for next year to see what happens.
Keller, Kinley, and Moran are all going to be off the 40 man by spring training.
Absolutely. I just feel you put him on Houston or Oakland, and all of sudden he's great. I'm not sure what's missing, but the Fangraphs article is encouraging for him.I feel like Conley has been a "tweak" away for years now, though.
This isn't even remotely true. Plenty of good players sign short-term deals. You need to offer the long term contracts to the young and in their prime FAs, but it's another pair of shoes if what you want was just mediocre ones.
I feel like Conley is a new organisation away from becoming the next Brad Handrew Miller.Absolutely. I just feel you put him on Houston or Oakland, and all of sudden he's great. I'm not sure what's missing, but the Fangraphs article is encouraging for him.
I think he gets until the Super 2 deadline and then all bets are off. Sink or swim.
Castellanos wants the long term contract, too. This isn't even remotely true. Plenty of good players sign short-term deals.
Seems like you're thinking of guys like Cole and Rendon, who were never realistic options for us anyway.
