My advice, WAIT.

I just scrapped my Vista setup b/c it was causing my XP install (Dual boot) to crash. I reinstalled Vista by itself. Still unstable. I have found if you are doing an upgrade from XP on an older machine, Vista has some problems with certain hardware and drivers. I think the prebuilt machines with Vista preinstalled are a much better way to go as of right now. I'm giving Vista a year before upgrading and scrapping XP.

I have heard nothing but bad news about Vista. No one I know who has upgraded likes it

I upgraded it from Win XP and I'm quite happy with it. It doesn't offer any thing really special over XP that you would want to upgrade right away, but it is a very pretty package with Aero Glass and the 3D Flip is just a cool evolution over the Alt-Tab of Windows past. I would say if you really know what you are doing and are willing to tinker with it a little bit and get it the way you want it, Vista is a worthwhile upgrade. However as people have said already, its probably best to wait a few months until Micro$oft gets all of the bugs worked out of it.

i think it's a downgrade myself. it's not as big as ms makes it to be, with many cancelled features among other things. it also cannot run some older programs...big thumbs down.

many of the mac users will say that it's a backwards os x clone, with it being still behind of what os x was 7 years ago.

i wouldn't get it unless you bought a new computer, and even then, i would consider other operating systems first, including mac os x from apple.

I've heard nothing but horror stories about it, personally.

I love horror stories about Windows products.

I like to laugh at them while I use my MacBook.

Just wait until you get your next computer eventually. The drawbacks of Vista definatly outweigh the benefits right now.

As with most Windows OS's, wait. Microsoft loves to release and then patch when needed. It would behoove you to wait a while.

Yeah, I have both an iMac and a Sony Vaio lap-top and I must say that I'm very impressed with OS X. I haven't yet mastered it, but it certainly is making me see why a lot of people are making the switch.

oh, yenta, you can either wait for vista to get stable, which could be years, or wait about a month for leopard, the newest cat in the mac os x line. it's 10.5 btw. get it with a new mac, which isn't that expensive anymore. you can get a mac mini for 600 bucks, provided you have a keyboard, mouse and monitor already.

The iBook I got 1 1/2 years ago (I probably would have waited, but my Windows Me piece-of-crap laptop was going to hell for me) is still humming along quite nicely. I love having no viruses. I also love it that Norton (provided through the school) has only picked up one since I got this computer.

Oh, and for when the time comes, does anyone know how to do a Mac upgrade? Do I have to nuke the HD like with Windows or does it upgrade seamlessly once I start the process? And yes, I know, I should probably do backups first.

I just installed Windows Vista on my Compaq Presario v2000. I tell you, I haven't used Mac OS X, but I've seen all the videos on youtube comparing the two OS's. While it seems like Microsoft ripped off the design and some features off of Apple, I still wouldn't care. I've never really been a fan of Mac's, and I've used them since I was a kid. I mean, nowadays Macs are nice and flashy and powerful, but most games I play won't run on Macs. It's that simple, I won't buy a mac till they get the support of the game industry.

But to get back to Vista, It's sleek and fast. It's actually quite different from XP, I guess its like OS X, but Like I said, never used it. I'm not that impressed by it, but I don't really regret upgrading. I haven't experienced any problems thus far.
