QuickGold
Yahoo! preview Off to a slow start after a brilliant 2003 campaign, Jason Schmidt is hoping to build off his first win of the season when the San Francisco Giants continue a four-game series with the defending World Series champion Florida Marlins. Schmidt, who won 17 games and led the National League with a 2.34 ERA last year, didn't make his first start until April 16 after undergoing offseason elbow surgery. The hard-throwing right-hander lost his first two starts, yielding nine runs and 10 hits over 11 innings while striking out five and walking four. On Monday, Schmidt allowed two runs and six hits, while striking out a season-high six, over five innings in a 3-2 win over Atlanta. ``He's our No. 1 starter, he's supposed to stop the bleeding,'' Giants slugger Barry Bonds said of Schmidt. ``That's why he's the No. 1 guy.'' Schmidt was especially appreciative of the three third-inning runs the Giants scored for him against Atlanta. San Francisco had gone scoreless when Schmidt was in the game in each of his first two outings. ``That was really nice,'' he said. ``It was like last year's team that would come out and score three runs off the bat.'' Bonds went 0-for-2 with an RBI and two walks Friday as the Giants bounced back from a series-opening 4-3 loss Thursday by outslugging the Marlins 12-9. The teams were tied 9-9 after only two innings, but Bonds walked with the bases loaded to plate the go-ahead run in the fifth as San Francisco beat Florida for the first time since Game 1 of last year's NL division series, which the Marlins took in four games. Brian Dallimore hit a grand slam and Jeffrey Hammonds also homered for the Giants, who finished April a disappointing 10-14 after winning 18 of their first 24 a season ago. Hee Seop Choi belted a three-run homer and Mike Redmond added a three-run double for Florida, which went a stellar 15-8 in April one year after finishing the season's first full month with a 14-15 mark en route to a world title. paradox
few random notes from my trip to SBC yesterday: -was disappointing to see willis get shelled so badly, especially in front of a large cheering contingent for him... -at the beginning of the game it was really cold and windy, which might have contributed to the pitchers' wildness..with an afternoon game today it should be much warmer. -during BP before the game pavano and rosenthal were in the bullpen working on pavano's throwing motion. rosenthal seemed a bit frustrated for some reason, but pavano seemed OK so hopefully we don't have anything to worry about. -easley and mordecai were signing lots of autographs before the game..mordecai especially is a jokester and a nice guy. i congratulated him on his walkoff home run prowess also, burnett was in uniform, running around and stretching before the game, so that's a good sign..
