CapeFish
MLB on FOX Steps To The Plate For Ninth Season Wednesday, May 19, 2004 FOX Saturday Baseball Game of the Week Action Returns with a Cards-Cubs Showdown at Wrigley & A-Rod leading the Yankees to Texas to Take on the Rangers Brennaman Makes Calling Perfect Games a Family Tradition MLB ON FOX STEPS TO THE PLATE FOR ITS NINTH SEASON -- The multi Emmy Award-winning FOX SATURDAY BASEBALL GAME OF THE WEEK returns to kick off its ninth season on Saturday, May 22 (1:00 -- 4:00 or 4:00 -- 7:00 PM ET) with live regional coverage of four games. Highlighting the early match ups are the first-place Dodgers against the Braves in Atlanta and one of baseball's best rivalries when the Chicago Cubs clash with the Cardinals at Wrigley. Later, Alex Rodriguez's New York Yankees visit the Texas Rangers while the defending World Champion Florida Marlins host the Diamondbacks. Game coverage is preceded by the Emmy Award-winning pregame show, with host Jeanne Zelasko and analyst Kevin Kennedy. This week's show features Kennedy's report on the new-look Dodgers who endured much off-season criticism only to return to the top of the standings and are now the favorites to win the division. Plus, a segment in which Thom Brennaman sits down with Alex Rodriguez, and his replacement in Texas, Michael Young. Young, who has been putting up superstar numbers himself this year, and Rodriguez discuss playing shortstop in Texas during and post the A-Rod era. FOR THOM BRENNAMAN, CALLING PERFECT GAME IS NOW A FAMILY TRADITION -- MLB on FOX play-by-play announcer Thom Brennaman calls this Saturday's 4PM ET Yankees @ Texas game alongside analyst Steve Lyons, a series that will mark the return of Alex Rodriguez to The Ballpark in Arlington. Exciting, but it will be tough to match Brennaman's Tuesday night experience of calling Randy Johnson's perfect game, just the 17th in Major League history, which he worked alongside fellow Diamondback broadcaster Mark Grace. Amazingly, Thom isn't the only Brennaman to have called a perfect game. His father, Cincinnati legend Marty Brennaman, had the honor of calling Tom Browning's perfect effort in 1988 vs. Los Angeles. As for this most recent feat, Thom offered the following: "Anytime Randy Johnson is on the mound, a no-hitter is not beyond the realm of possibility, his stuff is just that good. But a perfect game? You'd be foolish to even pretend you've got a shot to see something like that, much less call the action. It first struck (booth mate) Mark Grace and I that we might be in store for an incredible game after the Braves' half of the fifth. Each out in that inning was loud, hard line-drives hit right at Diamondbacks. After Johnson escaped that frame with the perfect game still intact, it was like, 'Wait a minute here.' By the eighth and ninth innings, you just can't believe what you're seeing. I've been lucky enough along the way to call some big, amazing games --postseason thrillers, you name it -- but from an individual standpoint, nothing I've ever done has packed that much adrenaline." We can hope for a rainout in Texas and get 41% clearance Seriously, this is a game I can get. Unfortunately, not many FOX affiliates picked it in even the team's respective regional territory. Guest Moneyball
i hate thom brenaman. i lost respect for him during the NLCS, and his pro-Cubs rants. i am so glad he did the sixth games of the NLCS.in the 8th inning before breaking to commercial: "a horrific turn of events here in chicago". he could have been nice the marlin fans and said:"what a surprising turn of events here in chc." *ends pro marlin rant*
