Yesterday's rainout is very positive

The Marlins hoped their luck would turn after a bevy of weekend trades -- and that might already be happening.

After losing five in a row to the Montreal Expos, the Marlins found themselves trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning Sunday before a torrential downpour forced the game to be called.

''I think it was a good day,'' manager Jack McKeon said. ``We have no control over the weather, but it certainly didn't hurt us. It gives the guys a chance to regroup and also [the new guys] to get to know their teammates a little bit better.''

Newly acquired reliever Rudy Seanez, for example, didn't arrive until two hours before game time after a predawn flight from Kansas City, where his old club has suddenly gone on a winning streak.

''They've won two in a row,'' Seanez said, ``and I brought rain.''

Catcher Paul Lo Duca, who showed up in the middle of Saturday's game after a cross-country flight, also welcomed the rain.

''I'm still a little tired,'' he said. ``You get a rainout, it's like getting a couple of days off.''

Umpire crew chief Gerry Davis made the decision to call the game after a 97-minute delay.

The game, which started 15 minutes late because of rain, is the first to be rained out at Pro Player Stadium since May 2003. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader Sept. 14. Ticket stubs from Sunday's game can be exchanged for admission to any 2004 home game, pending ticket availability. Rain checks can be exchanged in person at Pro Player Stadium or at the Marlins en Miami store in Little Havana.
