Posted June 23, 200322 yr We should definitely have a better record with the way our players have put up numbers. Check out this CBS sportsline ranking...It takes into account 1) infield 2) outfield 3)starting rotation 4)bullpen It gives each player a number ranking and then averages all the players together in their categories giving that category an average score. They then add up all the categories for a final score...we are 11th overall...ahead of both the Expos and Phillies...4 of 5 NL East teams are in the top 15. Interesting rankings and prove to me in hard stats that we should be about 7-8 games over .500 statistically. It's mind boggling we had such a bad record, but at least now we are approaching .500 and gaining in the standings! June 23, 200322 yr kind of like the A's.....they dont have any great people right now but they are winning.... there is a great chapter in Moneyball on this topic....
June 23, 200322 yr Talent is only good when realized. The Fish have figured this out and are fulfilling thier potential In our last 10 we are 7-3
June 23, 200322 yr Moneyball? NY Times best seller, written by Michael Lewis.... just came out it's all about the A's winning with little payroll/ and about Bill James and sabermetrics
June 23, 200322 yr Author Very true. This also amazed me today. At one point we were 19-29 which is 10 games under .500 so just to get to this point of being one game under is quite an achievment. In the past 5 or 6 games our offense has been MIA which makes it even more impressive. When your pitching picks up your offense and vice versa for a stretch of games you can find out just how good your team is.
June 23, 200322 yr I just might have to buy this book. trust me... you wont be disappointed Book Review Review #2
June 23, 200322 yr I think Billy Beane is full of sh*t. The A's dont do well because of his mathematical crap. They do it because of midseason trades. There are plenty of examples of why his idea of using eggheads to figure out who is best in baseball instead of coaches and managers works, but there are also plenty of examples of why his method doesn't work. I for one think it is crap. I have a hard time believing that stats tell the whole story. I think there is a such thing as gut feelings, and instinct. And I think that stats and numbers can never tell the whole story. Probablities, chances, odds, all that bs...its crap. And he makes excuses for not doing well in the playoffs...he said something like this: "Once you get into the playoffs, winning the World Series is luck." Well, I know a bunch of Yankees fans, Angels fans, Marlins fans (97 baby!) who would disagree.
June 23, 200322 yr lol its all a ploy to get more money in billy goats pocket.....only mut fans would buy what Bill Goat says..... anywayz i saw the rankings #1 INFIELD BABY!!!!! hellllll ya... hard to understand that we beat the Texas Rangers infield, Viagra Man,Hank Blaylock,A-rod, and Texeria..... ill take it what really upsets me here is we are #9 in bul pen????? are you freaking kidding me?????? man in my opnion this bul pen is over rated there #20 outta the 30 teams what a "NATIONAL OUTRAGE" #9 hahahah what the hell are they looking at?
June 23, 200322 yr Author Wow. Sounds like an incredible book. did you read that Voros article on pitching and defense? Very technical, but well thought out calculations regardless.
June 23, 200322 yr Author Viagra Man ^^^ lol! Well I think we beat their infield because it includes the catchers position which we win. Plus its a sum of all the individual rankings of each INF player. So even though A-Rod maybe beat A-Gon in their rankings the difference is small whereas at 3B Lowell beats Teixiera by a mile. I agree with you on the bullpen so I checked it out. Looks like they don't include players sent down because Vlad isn't listed. It will be legit once Phelps returns and either Tejera or Neal is sent down. Also check the stats on Scott Sanders @ AAA....I anticpate bringing him up if Olsen/Neal continues to struggle. W L ERA GS CG IP H R ER 3 2 1.79 7 1 45.1 42 13 9 Nice stats especially in the hitters friendly league/parks the Topes play in. Only catch is that Scott is 34 years old, but I would like his experience in our mostly young pen. I'm also hoping Olsen can get it together because I think he has the mentality and stuff to be a 4th/5th starter or long inning relief man.

June 23, 200322 yr ya i know about sanders i was im talking with a bunch [people earlier about who do we send down and all this stuff..... thing is SHamz, Spoony comes back on Friday... say BYE to OLSEN Beckett is back on July 1st say BYE TO NEAL now what i failed to read was when Toby Boreland was Xpected back. and looks like he wont be back till AUgust... Ouch!!!! ya so Almanza said he has some Elbow Pain i say we put em on the 15 day DL and bring up sanders... lol i was so confused today with boreland didnt know he was out that damn long
June 23, 200322 yr i think Billy Beane is full of it. Yah he took Zito instead of Beckett. Yah he took Mulder instead of Ryan Mills. And Beane will say in his book about what a great idea it was to acquire Ricardo Rincon when in reality Cleveland GM Shapiro would give Rincon to anyone who would take the contract. And a big thing for Beane is to take college players instead of guys straight out of high school.....well, who are the two top players for the A's? Miguel Tejada (signed out of the Dominican Republic at the young age of 17), and Eric Chavez, who was signed out of high school. And we also find out that Beane really wanted Ben Sheets instead of Zito, but didn't have enough money to sign Sheets...so they settled for Zito. Oh and in 95, Beane convinced Sandy Alderson (the A's GM at the time) to not draft Todd Helton, but instead draft Ariel Prieto. Ariel Prieto???? And what team besides the Yankees has been the best team in the 90s? The Atlanta Braves...built by GM John Scheurholz. Beane believes in On-base plus Slugging Percentage (OPS) to judge hitters, and for pitchers...WHIP, ERA, and other stats. Here is what Scheurholz says he looks for. "Wins is always a good stat for pitchers," Schuerholz said. "For a position player, I like batting average. For run producers, your third, fourth and fifth hitters, I like RBI." Beane thinks those are three of the most overrated stats. Man those Braves have really sucked the past 12 years or so.
