Notes: Encarnacion Shows Flash

Recommended Posts

MIAMI -- All that Jack McKeon asks of Juan Encarnacion is one solid month.

In the middle of a down season, Encarnacion is starting to show flashes of production, as he is 6-for-13 (.462) with three doubles in his last three games.

"It looks like Encarnacion is starting to pick it up now," said McKeon. "If he hits, it's another plus."

Acquired on July 30 from the Dodgers, Encarnacion is in his second stint with the Marlins. He first came to Florida from Cincinnati at the All-Star break in 2002.

Last year the right fielder was a major contributor, with a .270 average, 19 home runs and 94 RBIs.

In his first 19 games after coming back to the Marlins this year, he was batting .258 with no homers and three RBIs in 66 at-bats.

"He gives us good defense," said McKeon. "We haven't seen the home run power. He's starting to produce some RBIs."

Part of Encarnacion's tail-off can be attributed to a left shoulder problem that developed in May, after he made a diving catch. The play, ironically, came at Pro Player Stadium, while he was still with the Dodgers.

Though there is speculation that Encarnacion will undergo offseason shoulder surgery, McKeon says the veteran is healthy.

"There is nothing wrong with the shoulder," he said.

Though Encarnacion's last home run was on July 24, against San Diego, McKeon is hopeful that the outfielder will provide a late-season spark, much the way Jeff Conine did in September 2003. Conine, acquired from Baltimore in late August of last season, was a key contributor in the Marlins' World Series run.
